I also discovered this lovely song because of Downton Abbey. That scene is one of my favorite Mary and Matthew moments. I love how she stops singing when he walks in the room, and then how he starts singing as he walks up the aisle toward her. So touching!
ImLivingAmber same.. I thought the song was written for the show and then I heard it on downtown abbey and realized it must have been a real song. "Pardon my past" is one one of my absolute favorite episodes in the show. this by far is the best version that I could find, but I love Charmed's version still the best... too bad its so short there...
I love this song, and this is such a lovely recording! I love the sound of the recordings from this period, with the slightly tinny, sometimes scratchy sound - it just fills me with nostalgia! Wish I could time travel...
OOps My bad this is Dick Haymes with The Song Spinners, and If You Were The Only Girl In The World, I named bad.. Sorry. Also folks please forgive the sound recovery on this oldie. The record was cracked, but it is such a lovely song. Early release on the black and gold decca label 18590A
If you were the only girl in the world And I were the only boy Nothing else would matter in the world today We would go on lovin' in the same old way A Garden of Eden just made for two With nothing to mar our joy I would say such wonderful things to you There would be such wonderful things to do If you were the only girl in the world And I were the only boy I would say such wonderful things to you There would be such wonderful things to do If you were the only girl in the world And I were the only boy
Just reading about the lyricist, Clifford Grey. He died in 1941 but not before writing 3000 songs. He also was an avid bobsledder and surreptitiously competed in the 1928 and 1932 Winter Olympics on the American team!
I heard many versions of this song and I can safely say that this is my favorite out of all. Well, except for Charmed maybe. I think that one is my favorite version.
This!! My favorite version is from Charmed and no one has recorded anything similar to it with that 20's delicate twang. This is my second favorite version though.
Hardly an early release since it was written in 1916, unless I'm misunderstanding which release you're referring to. Of no importance, of course, a lovely rendition. Thank you for posting.
crowe bobby The song was written in 1916 for a stage play ‘The Bing Boys are Here’ lyrics by Clifford Grey music written by Nat Ayer. The song was performed by George Robey and Violet Lorraine and it’s the first recording of this lovely song. It was a hit and became quite popular at the time! It has been recorded by several artists through the years. It’s delightful to listen to the original recording, it will transport you back to 1916 WWI was underway. I’m a big ‘Downton Abbey’ fan so when I watched Season 2, Ep. 5 Lady Mary began this song (Matthew was still missing in action so they thought) then Matthew walks in and they finish it as a duet!! I for one had tears running down my cheeks!
oops! Read the rest of the story. It was another Clifford Gray, an American, who traveled in the same circles who bobsledded and who also wrote songs. Bizarre.
Matthew and Mary brought me here.
yojimba06 me to!
yojimba06 me too
and me
Who are Matthew and Mary ?
I love this song! Mary & Edith Crawley have great voices.
Dick Haymes; one of the finest baritones ever.

I knew this song before Downton, but since watching that episode all those months ago, I've grown to love it so much..... the ultimate love song!
I love this song
This was my mother's favorite song. She used to sing it when she washed dishes. Fond memories now that she has passed away.
My Nana and Grandpa sang it too I've known it my whole life and have always loved it!
Listening this once and you 'll never forget it. ❤️
My dad used to sing this song when I was young. Brings tears to my eyes.
I love this song so much and I use to sing it with the aged care.
Am I the only one who heard this song from Charmed...?

Very well done. All those old pictures of the beautiful women remind me so much of my mom, it was her era.

Brilliant. Am here after hearing it on Downton Abbey, and what a powerful scene it was. Moved me to tears
If you were the only girl in the world
And I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We would go on lovin' in the same old way
A Garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
And I were the only boy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
And I were the only boy
I, too, am here because of Downton Abbey. You have done a good restoration job. I remember my grandparents singing it.
Wonderful song and video. Forgot about this song until I just heard it on Downton Abbey.
