When my mom learned that my dad had been captured during WWII, one of the things she did was go to an arcade downtown that had a little recording booth and record this song with no accompaniment. She kept it as a keepsake for the rest of her life. She played it for him when the War was over and he came home. I discovered it in their large record collection and played it, a few times. She really had a beautiful voice, and I could hear her emotion. The recording wasn't very good quality, and unfortunately over the years it became unplayable on any turntables. I had tried to record it onto tape, but that didn't last, either. I'm not sure what happened to the recording as I grew up and got on with my life. I couldn't find it among my parents' belongings when they passed.
This is another song my beloved diana loved it and so did i. This is a war time song WWII and beautiful. Now I list my diana partner of more then 68 years. Lovely song. God bless them both.
Watching in November 2024 at age 86, remembering hearing her on the radio as a child and hearing news of brave men and women fighting for freedom. They gave us many years of democracy. Bless them.
My dad was a WWII vet. He had so many of the 1940s records. I grew up listening to those songs. I'm 76 now. Both my parents are gone now as are so many of their generation. Their generation's music still lives on.💖
These old 1940's songs from the WW2 years were wonderful. My boyfriend left me in 1967, drafted into the Vietnam war. He did return unharmed thank God however our relationship wasn't like it was when he left. I know I used to write to him a lot but I never found the words to tell him how much I loved and missed him. Listening to these old songs now makes me sad to hear the words I could have written to him. Perhaps we would have been together after that war. He married and was married for over 40 years and I'm sure he was happy. He passed almost 3 years ago. He was my first kiss and first love. 💔
What An sad and beautiful story. So sorry for your first love and you. Thanks for shering. Hope you see him and you be together again, some day over the rainbow.
My Mom is reading my Dad's letters from 1943. He was overseas in the Airforce. He mentioned this song in his letter. This is the first time I heard this song. It is playing now as my Mom opens each letter. ❤️I
My 96 years old grandma always requests me to play this favorite song hers. As of writing, she is beside me singing. She never gets tired of listening to this timeless song fr ngl.
My mum sang this song in a talent show held at Butlins, Skegness in the late 1960s. It brings back such wonderful memories to me. Whenever I visit her grave I always gently sing this to her and like now the tears well up inside me. RIP you wonderful being, I miss you everyday mum xxx
Mom just passed, she was 97.Every morning of her life she sang this with her beloved Pappy. He wrote the words down as he got older. She gave it to me last week. I miss you already mom.
My parents are the WWII generation so I heard bits and pieces of this music growing up and I've always loved it. Standards like this one were covered by so many, especially here in the USA. But this woman's delicate voice is the one that always brings me to tears, especially when I consider what must have been happening just outside the recording studio in 1943 in the UK and the tough times my parents' generation endured.
De St Aberdeen, Scotland...We had shipyard and munition factories, plus we were in the north east, the North Sea was our doorstep. Our Beach was heavily guarded!..I was a kid then, I still remember the bombing though. Hope never to be in that situation again. Cheers from 🏴🇨🇦
De St Yes, Toronto, Home of the Blue Jays and the Awesome Raptors!! I am used to the winters now, they are not as bad as they used to be! I prefer the summer. My sister and I used to visit California a lot, I had 4 brothers living there, I also have retired u.s. military in my family, they are in ElPaso. I am keeping up to date on your news, stay safe! 🤗🏴🇨🇦👍🏻
Mom, wherever you are, I know this one must've been playing on the radio a lot when Dad was in the army. I don't even know if you liked it back then, but now that you're gone, it really gets me. I love you and I miss you.
I remember my Mom would sing songs when driving in the car and that song was always her favorite Love and miss you. Happy Mothers Day in Heaven. When I sing the song I'll be thinking of you
Go back to London during the 40/50/60s and walk in any side street pub and you'd hear this tune being played on a piano to the whole bar joining in the chorus. How times have changed. What a classic.
My husband who passed away last month and I would always dance to this song whenever we heard it. Even when he was in his wheelchair, we'd still "chair dance" to it. We were both '50's babies, but this was one of our favorites.
I'm almost 73, and I play this song on trombone a lot... Bravo for you and you're husband for "chair dancing" to it. Sorry for your loss. The two of you enjoyed beautiful music together and will dance together again, without the chairs.
My deceased Mother "sang this to me" in a dream last night. It has always been a top favorite of mine since I first heard it many years ago in "Hello Frisco." I'm 73!
My mom loved this song - she said it reminded her of my Dad. He was very good looking and when he came back from the war in 1946 she saw him come into the office. He was the new BOSS. His gaze met hers for a second - she looked away & thought to herself - don't be stupid- how could such a sophisticated gentleman be interested in a girl from a farm. Wasn't long after that encounter he invited her out to dine & dance. Life was beautiful then. I miss them both sooo much 😢. He really was a wonderful gentleman- business like but caring. He died when I was 11 - my Mom educated us both - they had started a mining supply business in the Goldfields of South Africa.
My Grandma has Alzheimer's disease and it's been hard on our family... this is one of the songs that she remembers every single word to. I'll always love this song for that.
I cried all the way through this wonderful song. So many memories. This astonishing artist is 97 now. I am so grateful for her inspiring music. My beloved father was killed in the service in 1943 (when I was 10) and music helped me to survive.
Oh gosh, that movie. I saw it a few weeks ago. They used this song so much! And that clip on the TV of Alice Faye singing this was surprising to me! I had no idea she sung it!!!! I looked it up and I THINK Alice Faye was the first to sing it... I could be wrong though.
there's a particular line that always gets me. How i feel about my husband exactly. The whole song is relatable but he hasn't gone away in years. Ever since I moved to be with him. Now he's my husband. " if there is some other way to prove that I love you, I swear I don't know how."
My grandad brought me up on the golden oldies like this one so many happy memories of a bygone era he has been gone now for 15 years and I miss him more now than the day he went thank you for this beautiful 🫶🏼
Then she passed away in 2020, at 103. She was born the year the USA entered WW1, lived through prohibition, the depression, Pearl Harbor and WW2, the birth and emergence of rock-n-roll, the 60s, Ayatollah, Disco, the rise of video games (all the consoles from Magnavox Odyssey, to Playstation4 and Nintendo Switch), the internet, 9/11, the first black president Obama, trump and finally Covid19 It's honestly kind of mind-blowing..
I am hear because I fell in love with Vera Lynn while searching for songs to sing and record for a present for my grandparents. Now that my grandma passed away on 05-09-2015, the day before mothers day, I haven been finding all sorts of older gems that I absolutely adore. I can't wait to sing them for her, We'll meet again, some sunny day.

I just turned 60 and loving this music! I could just imagine mom and pop dancing to this but they have both passed on. So much good music then...Thank you
It was the sob in the voice at a time in history when so many were in tears. A voice far more mature than I believe she was, having begun her career in her late teens and knocking them out.
I'm 49 year's old..and i can honestly say that i love this kinda music,..but how i found this song is by the way of the husband that sung it to his wife of 73 year's before her passing. beautiful but so sad 😭😭😭
Have been singing this song all week; remembering my Mother playing it on the piano and singing it with my Father. It holds a special place in my heart for a man who left and never came back.
I grew up listening to records of all the 1930s, 1940s, and some 50s when I was living in the Canal Zone from 1955-1968--my father who was born in PA knew loved all his records-- now that I'm 70 - I wish I had those records --brings back wonderful memories
A wartime favorite. She crafted her songs to provide a reminder that loveliness was still possible even in war. That message gave us the strength to go on fighting.
Ian L.Moore I grew up in WW2 listening to Vera, loved all her songs, she was an inspiration to our U.K and other soldiers. Her voice was angelic!🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦❤️💐
So many of us over 72 who found connection to the world through radio. There were stars who talked patriotism and humility, who asked only that we include ourselves in their songs. One of the towering voices was that of Vera Lynn. And while we listened at the foot of the radio, our parents heard the same voices and melodies, and reflected on their own very personal relationship to those same singers. Vera brought tears to our eyes, and chills of ennui, and beaming smiles as if one was bursting out of their body to be with her, to absorb more of her ideas, her voice. As we age, we give up those who we wished to retain and look to the future less today than we were when believed the person, the Dame, would be yet again to say a cheery word. Sigh, and thank you.
Vera Lynn, my all time favorite singer. I'm glad to see new movies are bringing in new listeners. Her voice is one of the best. She deserves this recognition before she passes. For those who don't know, this amazing woman is still alive. Born in 1917, and now 101 years old. A true legend.
I didn't know this song was about going away to war. An elderly lady sings this beautifully in a nursing home I play guitar in. Up to now I always thought the person in the song just went away as is the routine practice of today's relationships, lol. But heading off to war it brought a tear to my eye. It expresses the desperation of those waiting for them to come home and wanting them to know they were loved.
Vera was an inspiration to me as a girl of 12 yrs. old. I used to sing with my Dad’s band in Aberdeen Scotland. I sang in what was then, the N.A.F.I. Club for the forces. I learned a lot from her singing, she had a clear, angelic voice. I pay this tribute to her, she passed at 103 yrs. old. She was what kept the Troops going in the U.K. in battle and recovering. God Bless you Dame Vera Lynn. ❤️🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦
Vera Lynn was always a favorite of mine even though she wasn't from my era more of my moms and my grand mothers time I lost them both along with my Dad too but remember them all when I hear this song😢😂
Today would have been my mother's 99th birthday and I am really missing her. She was a part of "the Greatest Generation" and sang all of the wonderful songs of "The Great American Songbook" around the house. As I read all of the comments below, I am so touched. The comments are so sentimental and makes me grateful that we were all the children of the wonderful WWII generation. The composers of these songs as well as the lyricists were brilliant. The lyricists were "poets", writing words which expressed undying love and waiting to see their loved ones whom they miss so much. Vera Lynn sang with so much feeling. I think of today's young people who are now the same age that the majority of the soldiers were in WWII. The WWII families had no idea if their sons, husbands, sweethearts or brothers were alive or dead and had no idea of where they might be. The families were scared to death all the time that they might receive "the dreaded telegram" telling them that their son was either dead or missing. Today's (especially young) people think that it is terrible if someone doesn't reply to their text in 5 minutes. They wouldn't understand the beauty of these songs because they didn't go through the Depression as most of the WWII generation did. They are not tough as the WWII generation was and there is no way we could have won WWII without these tough soldiers. God bless all of them and God bless the wonderful songwriters and the singers (especially the great Vera Lynn) who helped us survive the War.
What a time, what a grand time in history with so much war, despair and yet the human hope came through in some of the most beautiful music ever written. thank you to all who dreamed, fought, hoped, sorrowed, wrote and sang. Stephen King
The iconic song that defined the personal side of the War - at least for my mom and dad. They couldn't listen to it without having tears in their eyes... Somewhere in all the clutter of my storage unit is a scratched up old 78 of my mother's voice singing this; recorded by her uncle while my dad was overseas... The message in this song probably helped in keeping young families together during the long separations the war caused. I need to listen to it once in a while - maybe out of respect for my parent's 67 years of marriage.
This was my Nana's (Grandmother) favourite song, we played it at her funeral last October. I can't play it without crying but listening to it makes me feel like she is with me.
my gran used to sing it to my granda, still get goosebumps when i hear it, vera lynn sounded amazing but my gran sang it so beautifully and heartfelt x
My 'Truest, Most Favorite, All Time, Old Love Ballad'... "You'll Never Know." ~ If I've sung it once, I've sung it a thousand times. I so, so LOVE Ms Lynn's rendition. PS.. Her Birthday in just over 2 years (2017), she'll be 100. God Bless her and the romance she brought to the world... esp. during WWII, singing to the British troops.
You'll never know how much I miss you Dad. Thank you Vera Lynn, this is a song that hurts my heart. He fought in World War II. I Miss You Pappy!!!! Merry Christmas DAD!
I'm not ashamed to admit that "The Shape of Water" sent me here b/c how else are we going to broaden our horizons? Some of the very best & most romantic music I've ever heard has come from the show, "Call the Midwife". I may not have been born until years later, but I still recognize a TRUE love song when I hear it...
Reminds me of my mom. She used to sing this when I was a young boy. I'm now a grandfather.
brotherjohn25 This makes me happy for some odd reason.

What keeps the great things alive is having memories and sharing them with others. Even if the recording has gone bad, its effects are to stay.
Mike Smith Such a touching story, dear Mike!!! Thank you for sharing it to us :-)
Mike Smith I know how you must feel Mike my father recorded a V disc for my Mother before he went overseas . Lost to time now

It was the sob in the voice at a time in history when so many were in tears. A voice far more mature than I believe she was, having begun her career in her late teens and knocking them out.
It was my moms favorite song for the man she truly loved world war two affected all men and women
Forces Sweetheart, Vera Lynn. We Loved Listening To Her. Great Memories. SS.
I'm 49 year's old..and i can honestly say that i love this kinda music,..but how i found this song is by the way of the husband that sung it to his wife of 73 year's before her passing. beautiful but so sad 😭😭😭
This is the most romantic love song ever. Listening to her beautiful voice gives me shivers!! 💙
Have been singing this song all week; remembering my Mother playing it on the piano and singing it with my Father. It holds a special place in my heart for a man who left and never came back.
This song gives me a great feeling of relief after a tiring day, I love 20th century music
The sweet old man singing to his wife of 73 years brought me here. Beautiful
I got here because of the video of a man sang to his dying wife posted/shared in FB. It's really touching!!!
would like to see this video
Tommy Un me too
I grew up listening to records of all the 1930s, 1940s, and some 50s when I was living in the Canal Zone from 1955-1968--my father who was born in PA knew loved all his records-- now that I'm 70 - I wish I had those records --brings back wonderful memories
A wartime favorite. She crafted her songs to provide a reminder that loveliness was still possible even in war. That message gave us the strength to go on fighting.
We will miss you Vera Lynn...You lived a good life...Thanks for the wonderful songs...2020 is the year of sorrows...
Ian L.Moore I grew up in WW2 listening to Vera, loved all her songs, she was an inspiration to our U.K and other soldiers. Her voice was angelic!🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦❤️💐
....im here because i wanted to listen to vera lynn ......
My dad's favourite singer. He knew what he was talking about, great voice, lovely lady.
Mum used to sing this to me as a child. Losing mum my heart went with her I cared for dad in my own way I never could replace that love.
I cried during this sequence in The Shape of Water. Love is real and it lives underwater.
Love that kind of movie and the soundtrack of THE SHAPE OF WATER..😊
Thank you for posting this beautiful video. Our very own Vera Lynn was wonderful.
This is my era when songs could be understood and boy she was a great singer!!!!
I hope you are still alive and doing great! god bless you!
Vera Lynn was always a favorite of mine even though she wasn't from my era more of my moms and my grand mothers time I lost them both along with my Dad too but remember them all when I hear this song😢😂
This really is majestic! What a beautiful rendition.
Thank you for sharing this gem.
God bless all of them and God bless the wonderful songwriters and the singers (especially the great Vera Lynn) who helped us survive the War.
back in the 50's, I used to watch old movies with my mom and to this day, I love a beautiful voice singing a beautiful song!
I'm 52 years old and my grandpa used to sing this to me ❤❤
What a time, what a grand time in history with so much war, despair and yet the human hope came through in some of the most beautiful music ever written. thank you to all who dreamed, fought, hoped, sorrowed, wrote and sang.
I remember my Mother singing this when I was a child and to see Vera's picture remind me how much Mum looked like her How lucky I was
This was my Nana's (Grandmother) favourite song, we played it at her funeral last October. I can't play it without crying but listening to it makes me feel like she is with me.

My mother sang this all the time I was growing up. I sing it now, and I think of her every time.
This is my mom's favorite song . Miss n love you Mama Priscilla 😘💗❤😥
God yes..........................

I use to sing this to husband a Vet of WWII. We both loved Vera Lynn.
Harkens back to the hellish days of WWII!
Memorable songs that left an indelible mark never to be forgotten!
Some of the greatest love songs were written during WW2. But then this was the time of "The Great Generation".
I agree.
They are actually referred to as "The Greatest Generation."
I love their music.

You'll never know how much I miss you Dad. Thank you Vera Lynn, this is a song that hurts my heart. He fought in World War II. I Miss You Pappy!!!! Merry Christmas DAD!
her voice is so beautiful
My nanny used to sing this to me and my brother when we were kids ❤️💚
This song must have touched many hearts during the dark period of the "forties". Thank you for posting.
