Dick Haymes was superb, and sadly is virtually forgotten.

This film clip features Dick Haymes and Harry James at the very top of their game. They were the best of their era, and they remain incomparable. This is what music for grown-ups sounds like. The era is gone, but it is a treat to be able to visit it again, even briefly.

My generation did this in the 60’s, thank God it wasn’t on a UA-cam platform, could have affected your whole life.

Dick Haymes was the very best male baritone of all, with perfect pitch, wonderful resonance and vibrato, a fairly perfect voice, and better than all others. He was the best. Harry James and Dick Haymes - does it get any better?

What's unfortunate about the above clip is the "deaf" decisions of the filmmakers to "frame" the mediocre number sung in full by Haymes with two bonafide winners. The first number is an unidentified Harry James feature, "I Wish I Knew," which has a searching theme that recommended the song to visionary John Coltrane for inclusion on his celebrated 1963 album, "Ballads. 2. Following performance of the forgettable main number, by Haymes, Harry pushes a 2nd number, an encore, onto Haymes (so that Harry can make out with Maureen O'Hara). The encore, which is the ever popular "The More I See You," is one of the brightesst jewels in the Great American Songbook, sung and played by too many artists to mention here.. Unfortunately, Haymes doesn't make it half way through his encore before he's drowned out by the insipid conversation between James and O'Haraa. And so goes the history of the American Popualr Song in movies. Musicians are paid to "play and get out of the way.." The loser ia not only America's indigenous music but listeners, who are never shown the vital connection between America's jazz and its popular music.

@@caponsacchi Lol - feel better now? Nothing wrong with that middle song - it's good they presented a variety of songs.

In my listening point of view Bing Crosby was a superior baritone singer to Dick Haymes. Crosby had a greater range Eflat1 to E flat 4. Haymes was a marvelous singer but had a bit too much vibrato for my taste. Bob Manning is another great under rated baritone crooner, very smooth as was Johnny Hartman.

Yes, and I think Crosby was sort of a mentor to Dick Haymes who apparently patterned himself after him. I think Crosby came before dick, though.@@waynerisman8257

This clip sent me into an all-day search. What was that gorgeous, haunting melody played by Harry (which is totally incognito in the film). I finally got my answer--from John Coltrane's "Ballads," which I hadn't listen to for 60 years: It's "I Wish I Knew" by Harry Warren.

Harry cut a beautiful side, with Kitty Kallen on vocal. Dick Haymes' version is even better, imo. Both are on UA-cam.

I don't know who designed the clothes for this movie but Maureen O'hara's outfit is ridiculous, and what is that weird swirly thing around her ear?
