THANK YOU I finally did it. 3-6 hours a day for 1 month straight. i had to break tons of bad habits after playing for 10 years, and my thumb almost bled, it hurt so much to play but i found the groove. so far ive learned "make me a pallet", "stagger lee" and currently learning "lonesome valley" which has an extremely hard thumb pattern. Ive watched your videos from the beginning thank you sir
You’re one of my favorite uploaders. Ever since I saw your version of Monday morning blues, featuring your son, I have kept tabs on your channel and even pushed myself to develop this skill thanks to you. Keep doing your thing, Peter!
Thanks for this video! I’m a relatively adept guitarist after a decade of playing but getting my thumb and other fingers to move independently is a skill that I didn’t even know how to acquire! I know feel like I have a blueprint, hopefully after a good deal of practice I’ll be able to pick this up!
Thank you, Pete . the youtube world is lucky to have you , not just sharing your skills on various guitars , but also this lesson . I hope I can encourage you to continue , your explanation and details are are just right , and It would be great if bring us all up to speed on this style of playing .
Brilliant job, Peter! I've been a player for many years so I was able to nail this lesson in about 2 hours of practice. However, that was only possible because of your relaxed, slow instruction method. Many finger picking tutorials go WAY too fast through the picking and fingerings. You go nice and slow and keep each part easily digestible. I never had to rewind the video asking "OK, that was rather fast... what was he doing there?". Your pace is spot on! I wouldn't have nailed this nearly so quickly without your slow, relaxed pace. Excellent job!. I'm subscribed!
Hi peter, thank you very much for your tutorials, helps me lot learning and practising mississippi john hurt style guitar playing. I am a beginner on finger picking, but started to upload my rehearsals on my channel. You are one of my influencers.
Months?!!? Lol This is the best video I have seen thus far focusing on the pickin’ hand! I mean, I don’t have a guitar in my hands (I’m on the can at the moment) and I can’t wait to try it! How I got started finger picking was very similar; start with a full C chord (G on the E included) do the bass notes just like you said while simultaneously hitting the G B and E strings with 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers (1 - 2 - 3 -2 -1 -2 -3 -2 - 1…) So pinch pinch pinch pinch then, after you’re comfortable with THAT, instead of pinching at the same time, pick one after the other…like you said “in between each bass note. Voilá! Off I go! (“Honey? Could you bring me another roll?) Thank you, btw! Cheers! DMac.
thank you Peter for this explanation. I can pull this out anywhere in the house till drive everyone around me crazy, and truly enjoy the process, and hope this becomes second nature!
Found your page by accident while listening to Mississippi John Hurt. Love these lessons, thank you for doing them. Love you're using a Gretsch in some other videos. Thank you again, very useful.
Nice practice methods for this style of finger picking! It's definitely something most people can pick up right away (no pun intended), but you do a great job at breaking it down. Nice job!
I've just been learning this recently. I could already play four beats per bar with my thumb but convincing my fingers to work independently has been a challenge.
Thank you Ever so much for this little series. Something I've always wanted to master and your lessons are going to do the trick. Only started working on it 2 days ago but already see some headway. Definitely going to take, "me" some time but it'll get there. Bravo Sir!
Thanks bro, I love how you teach because you understand how hard this is but find a way to simplify it ,so then I can learn and also learn it in a way that I can retain all the info. I will be looking at allot of your videos now Sir. I want to play so bad it hurts. I may have found my outlet. Thx again and god bless
I decided to work on fingerpicking a bit... And here's a video by Peter Keane who I saw many years ago in Baltimore, and I'm a fan. I have copy of Another Kind of Blue that's still in the rotation to this day.
I taught myself how to finger pick, It turned out like this, only not as good, lol! But now I got an idea where to go with it. I was happy with it, and did well, so I thought. I was told by someone that I was finger picking wrong and they corrected me and taught me how to do travis picking. Now I realize, I was not wrong, just different. I started with freight train, and they couldn't figure out how I was playing in between baselines. lol!
Thx for This Sir,been longing to learn this style, perhaps you can tackle " Here am I,Oh Lord send Me" in video, for that I'd be grateful,I sitting hearing trying to play along!
thank you sir for a fine tutorial, I've progressed more in the last couple of weeks than the previous 5 years ( started playing at the age of 40, if you can't beat "em!! )
Why back and forth with middle finger on the 5-6 instead of just leaving on the 6 and pinky on the 5? is it intentional to mute the strings? habit to keep pinky free for 7/9th?
Hi ShoegazeBen - good question! Yes in Mississippi John Hurt's style there's often a lot of pinky fretting on the top 3 strings, so I'm in the habit of going back & forth on 5/6 with ring. Some people do it differently (and sometimes I do to). Interestingly, Blind Blake and Merle Travis (and I'm sure lots of others) use just the ring finger to fret both the 5 & 6th strings at the 3rd fret. It's awkward for me - you need to have it sit just right so that it pushed both strings down.
For me the trickier stuff just builds on top of the basics. Getting that basic alternating thumb is by far the hardest thing. After that the rest is just adding new riffs here and there.

What a nice find? I finally found someone who teaches John Hurt's fingerpicking style well.

Thanks, Peter! Coming to the Hurt style from 3-finger banjo. Nice to see it broken down here.

Thanks a lot !!
You did video using a Norman Blake model.....do you still have it? I'd like to try one...Ive liked 212 frets and think that's my calling, lol.....
Great tutorial Peter. Thanks! BTW, are those nylon strings on that guitar? (Love that guitar!)
Thanks Za zu! No, regular steel strings.
I´ve just cracked some simple travis picking. It took a long while. This seems even more complex...
For me the trickier stuff just builds on top of the basics. Getting that basic alternating thumb is by far the hardest thing. After that the rest is just adding new riffs here and there.
Great video, thank you
thanks Benjamin!
It’s like riding a bike all of a sudden you can do it😇
Fraulini guitar? Very cool..
Gibby yes indeed Fraulini “Loretta”
I got it! Thank you! On to part 2.
What's the name of the tune at 0:18?
I think Mississippi John hurt reuses some guitar parts but to my ear it sounds like “nobody’s dirty business”
But Mr. Hurt did not play with thumbpicks.
