- Actress Meryl Streep (the 2004 Recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award) presents the 2012 award to Shirley MacLaine. The two co-starred in POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, and Meryl speaks about how there are some performers that we "fall early and we fall hard for them," and follow them for the rest of their lives.

Meryl is absolutely correct. I fell in love with Shirley as a young man and I have followed her career aver since. I also had the pleasure of seeing her in her one woman show over30 years ago. She was wonderful, she has the life force, is strong, open so hardworking and talented.

The younger people who do not remember Shirley from the start, and think maybe she was born this age & treat her like an old lady...They dont have a clue about what they missed. Her dancing on stage...gorgeous woman, gorgeous legs...always with 3 inch stilettos because as she said (they give the ankle a nice curve). Tiny waist, beautiful face...let the jerks make fun. They should only have 1/1000 th of her talent and beauty. And goodness!

She specifically wanted to be surrounded by the women whom she felt she had travelled a journey with...that's not just class...that's a very strong woman...and of course, the first person she expressed her devoted love was...Warren Beatty. I think that may answer your question...I hope so.

It was pretty clear that Meryl was telling us what the painter had said to her- and the joke was Not lost on the audience, because.. they laughed. That was Meryl’s whole point- that although people forget the names of movies and characters- they don’t forget the human they saw.

Well it's kind of a performance, to be asked to stand up in front of loads of people and do something like this. You're trying to warm up a crowd to create a buzz for the main event. You can't be entirely natural - slouch, pick your nose and swear...
Agree. I never totally believe her. It's a trick. She's a technical actress, not an emotional one. She does it well, but it's still all technique. And she also does that when she does these "honor" things. I just don't believe it. It's acting. Not feeling.

SHIRLEY MACLAINE'S daughter wrote one of the most torrid books about the evils of her mother that far surpasses "Mommie Dearest" who few even read. Such books have become "Old hat". Joan Crawford's career suffered but not Shirley MacLaine's regardless of the sexual abuse her daughter endured from Shirley's husband set up by Shirley MacLaine.
Then again, Meryl Streep also called Harvery Weinstein "God", but such is easily forgotten in the permissive age in which we live.
I am not insecure in my opinion that Meryl is full of it. I am not silencing anyone who does not think different from me.

totally agree. I don't think Meryl even means half of what she says here. She obviously likes Shirley, but it's not some kind of profound admiration. Compare it when she was talking about Vanessa Redgrave, you'll see all the difference. Meryl was winging this speech. It was not genuine. Obviously then, Meryl's not as good an actress as people say.

Many people will rediscover Shirley through Downton, I'm sure. Unfortunately, she's not relevant to mainstream modern audiences much in the same way Meryl was not before Mama Mia.
She really isn't. Even her performance in Iron Lady wasn't even half-assed. She wasn't invested in her character as much as she is invested in her speech here. She is reading lines, not really acting.
I highly doubt that August" Osage County will revive Meryl Streep's dramatic abilities to anything what it was when she was actually invested in her work in the late 70s and early 80s. She's a rusted out victim of her own clout that has, like a monster, eaten away her golden talent into something sad and pitiful.
outinsider......What just came into my mind: well, we all have the right to not live up to our full potential. The fact that you saw this in Meryl Streeps "development" makes you special. And I wonder what you and I have to do with this phenomenon:" Living out of our true nature" and " not achieving the peak point of possibilities". I certainly don't live up to my potential. But...well I have to mention again: It is allright......The last year's I came to this thought: "I am not sure that the true meaning of a purposeful life really has to do with potential.. @@holgerschafer4583 I like her too, and while my comment was 7 years ago, I think I was a little harsh. I kept seeing Meryl getting roles that would fit other actresses her age that may fit them better, and I was seeing clout, that is entirely deserved, but could be equally spent supporting women in her age range needing support in another capacity to share the shine. I love what you said though. Not everyone can live up to their full potential all the time, and it was very masculine of me to demand that Meryl always live up to it, when she hasn't, but her reputation that she always does conflicts with that that says she doesn't always. It's okay for her not to live up to full potential all the time too, same as you and me. We all deserve to respect our energy levels. Thanks for commenting. I like Meryl too.
