I love how Julia is always quick to laugh, and can’t stop smiling huge throughout Meryl’s whole speech. She’s so present and right there and SO happy for her.
“We fall early and we fall hard, and we follow them for the rest of their lives.” You just described yourself, Meryl. I’ll follow you for the rest of your life. ❤️
What a Beautiful and THOUGHTFUL speech. Meryl is clearly very gifted at writing-her praise and general observations of Shirley were so specific. This was wonderful
Gratitude for the video. I'm so glad it was Meryl who got to present Shirley with her AFI. Also Meryl speech is beautiful. Spoken from the heart. When Meryl speaks, people listen. I now know why I HEART her so much. A true gem, a thoughful person, full of grace and love.
Oh! I just watched Steel Magnolias a few days ago, which I totally enjoyed. It's great to see Julia Roberts and Sally Field sitting beside her on such an important moment for her. Feels like one sweet reunion!
Meryl is absolutely correct. I fell in love with Shirley as a young man and I have followed her career aver since. I also had the pleasure of seeing her in her one woman show over30 years ago. She was wonderful, she has the life force, is strong, open so hardworking and talented. John Sivorn. England.
What's wrong with you guys ?! How can you say such things about Meryl ?! She is not a good actress?! Really? She is the best actress in the world she works so hard , harder than any other actress ! And why don't you believe what she says in this video about Shirley ? I believe all the things she sad ! I can't understand you guys ... I pity you guys ... She is she most lovely person on earth!!!!!!!
The younger people who do not remember Shirley from the start, and think maybe she was born this age & treat her like an old lady...They dont have a clue about what they missed. Her dancing on stage...gorgeous woman, gorgeous legs...always with 3 inch stilettos because as she said (they give the ankle a nice curve). Tiny waist, beautiful face...let the jerks make fun. They should only have 1/1000 th of her talent and beauty. And goodness!
I love Shirley macLane because she have a true connection with life ! I wish I can connect with her to produce a movie I wrote about the undead. Blessings Shirley and thank you for being.thalia Alexiou
Shocking that among current actors neither Robert Duvall or Gene Hackman -- both over 80 -- have not received this award. Or Mickey Rooney or Olivia de Havilland for that matter. Get with it AFI!
Merryl Streep has the class and love that Shirley needs nowadays … A second daughter ;) xoxo to both of them, you can feel that love between them and it's sooooo beautiful !
She specifically wanted to be surrounded by the women whom she felt she had travelled a journey with...that's not just class...that's a very strong woman...and of course, the first person she expressed her devoted love was...Warren Beatty. I think that may answer your question...I hope so.
Majella66 and left that one important person that should have been there. D WINGER may have been a thorn for her but I think she was one of the most important women in her journey. That seat feels empty without emma
Well it's kind of a performance, to be asked to stand up in front of loads of people and do something like this. You're trying to warm up a crowd to create a buzz for the main event. You can't be entirely natural - slouch, pick your nose and swear...
Agree. I never totally believe her. It's a trick. She's a technical actress, not an emotional one. She does it well, but it's still all technique. And she also does that when she does these "honor" things. I just don't believe it. It's acting. Not feeling.
It was pretty clear that Meryl was telling us what the painter had said to her- and the joke was Not lost on the audience, because.. they laughed. That was Meryl’s whole point- that although people forget the names of movies and characters- they don’t forget the human they saw.
Because when one is insecure they don't deal with it internally, they externalize it and find someone else to blame for their lack of conviction in things. In this case, it is my differing opinion that triggered you to insult me.
And I wonder why people on youtube are so sophomoric when it comes to arguing. Most of them are actually sophomores in high school or either left school their sophomore year.
SHIRLEY MACLAINE'S daughter wrote one of the most torrid books about the evils of her mother that far surpasses "Mommie Dearest" who few even read. Such books have become "Old hat". Joan Crawford's career suffered but not Shirley MacLaine's regardless of the sexual abuse her daughter endured from Shirley's husband set up by Shirley MacLaine. Then again, Meryl Streep also called Harvery Weinstein "God", but such is easily forgotten in the permissive age in which we live.
I miss the days when great movie stars shunned the spotlight. Jimmy Stewart. Kate Hepburn. So when one did see them on t.v., it was worth the wait. I am permanently allergic to La Streep, all the Julia's, and someone please tell Mcconaughey it's over.
totally agree. I don't think Meryl even means half of what she says here. She obviously likes Shirley, but it's not some kind of profound admiration. Compare it when she was talking about Vanessa Redgrave, you'll see all the difference. Meryl was winging this speech. It was not genuine. Obviously then, Meryl's not as good an actress as people say.
Many people will rediscover Shirley through Downton, I'm sure. Unfortunately, she's not relevant to mainstream modern audiences much in the same way Meryl was not before Mama Mia.
I highly doubt that August" Osage County will revive Meryl Streep's dramatic abilities to anything what it was when she was actually invested in her work in the late 70s and early 80s. She's a rusted out victim of her own clout that has, like a monster, eaten away her golden talent into something sad and pitiful.
outinsider......What just came into my mind: well, we all have the right to not live up to our full potential. The fact that you saw this in Meryl Streeps "development" makes you special. And I wonder what you and I have to do with this phenomenon:" Living out of our true nature" and " not achieving the peak point of possibilities". I certainly don't live up to my potential. But...well I have to mention again: It is allright......The last year's I came to this thought: "I am not sure that the true meaning of a purposeful life really has to do with potential.. I find a lot of truth in LETTING GO.... So...I like your thoughts, I like my little life ...and I like Meryl Streep. Greets from Germany.
@@holgerschafer4583 I like her too, and while my comment was 7 years ago, I think I was a little harsh. I kept seeing Meryl getting roles that would fit other actresses her age that may fit them better, and I was seeing clout, that is entirely deserved, but could be equally spent supporting women in her age range needing support in another capacity to share the shine. I love what you said though. Not everyone can live up to their full potential all the time, and it was very masculine of me to demand that Meryl always live up to it, when she hasn't, but her reputation that she always does conflicts with that that says she doesn't always. It's okay for her not to live up to full potential all the time too, same as you and me. We all deserve to respect our energy levels. Thanks for commenting. I like Meryl too.
outinsider .... I nodded a lot reading your comment just now. Thank you very much indeed. I do appreciate it very much. Stay safe and if possible healthy in these strange days. Best wishes.
She really isn't. Even her performance in Iron Lady wasn't even half-assed. She wasn't invested in her character as much as she is invested in her speech here. She is reading lines, not really acting.
I love how Julia is always quick to laugh, and can’t stop smiling huge throughout Meryl’s whole speech. She’s so present and right there and SO happy for her.

@Ben Ben Pardon? I can’t understand you.
@Ben Ben I don’t think so. Just having a laugh at the mistake itself, not at Mer specifically.
until she began to be a progressit lol
What a Beautiful and THOUGHTFUL speech. Meryl is clearly very gifted at writing-her praise and general observations of Shirley were so specific. This was wonderful
a trick : you can watch series at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.

Wow, to be presented an award by the award magnet herself is quite an honor.
Oh! I just watched Steel Magnolias a few days ago, which I totally enjoyed. It's great to see Julia Roberts and Sally Field sitting beside her on such an important moment for her. Feels like one sweet reunion!

Glenn Close deserves to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award...
+Renan C. Maia I like you

Renan C. Maia For real! In my opinion Glenn Close is the best actress since Bette Davis. Glenn is an actress, Meryl is a movie star.
Oscar too. Hopefully this year for Wife.
Great speech. Great speech.

Love it when Julia Roberts burst out laughing !
Barbra Streisand where was she during this occasion? Any video of her with a message for Shirley?
She seems always absent from any events to do with film or screen acting
Merryl Streep has the class and love that Shirley needs nowadays … A second daughter ;) xoxo to both of them, you can feel that love between them and it's sooooo beautiful !

Why Warren Beatty is not in the table of Shirley?
She specifically wanted to be surrounded by the women whom she felt she had travelled a journey with...that's not just class...that's a very strong woman...and of course, the first person she expressed her devoted love was...Warren Beatty. I think that may answer your question...I hope so.

Irma La Douche LOL
Meryl never stops acting

Great to see Jennifer Aniston among great stars of hollywood. She was invited as one.
Shamma A. if u ignore the shit that went down in terms, Aniston is sitting on Wingers spot
Irma La Douche. Okay, so was that the painter friend’s mistake, or did Meryl mispronounce it? Or was the joke lost on the crowd?
It was pretty clear that Meryl was telling us what the painter had said to her- and the joke was Not lost on the audience, because.. they laughed. That was Meryl’s whole point- that although people forget the names of movies and characters- they don’t forget the human they saw.
Right, who am I to be critical of the Goddess Meryl Streep?
Because when one is insecure they don't deal with it internally, they externalize it and find someone else to blame for their lack of conviction in things. In this case, it is my differing opinion that triggered you to insult me.
I am not insecure in my opinion that Meryl is full of it. I am not silencing anyone who does not think different from me.
Bully for you, pal. I'm impressed. Not.
That freaking hater spams Meryl vids, ughh.

@Janemeryl * anyone say

Man I wish DW had buried the hatchet before this. doesn't
feel right without her
Sag Rai What was the beef between the 2 of them?
Or Jane Fonda
I love Meryl soooooooooooooo much, but that skirt is hideous
Right, but the schoolyard popularity smirks do wonders for you. Oh to be young and insecure.

Harvey Weinstein's friend as I recall🤔...

and your not insecure? look who was insulting someones speech????
She wears the most awful clothes. Great actress though.
She's a dude ,don't you people know that by now? Hello?
