    What do these journalists even mean by "entitlement"? We are the source of their revenue as a company, it's only normal that they should seek to satisfy us if they want to stay in business. There's no need to sugarcoat this, feel bad for their feely feels, because all of this is pure business. AAA games have forgone the art piece title and their artistic integrity a long time ago to become pure objects of business, and I refuse to ever give credit to a AAA company's "artistic vision", because there is none. They make a product to satisfy their client. They do a bad job? The client speaks up. That's not to say that people working for these companies don't put passion in their work, in fact I feel bad for the development team on D:I who must've been excited to show what they were working on only to get boo'd to fuck, but I'm fairly certain that they don't take it personnaly, because it's a BUSINESS.

      'Entitlement' is a buzzword today currently used in the game company/game 'journalism' circles to shame people who complain about crappy products or expect an actual project with a complete experience given to them for their expense, like they used to get years ago. The big companies funnel $$ into journalist companies to attack the people attacking them to make them look bad. It's propaganda more or less, and the word 'entitled' is used to describe a lot of people today who are upset about the way things are run by their corporate overlords. You hear it a lot. 'Entitled Gamers', 'Entitled Millenials' and so on and so forth. Not only is it a bogus way of deflecting the anger at the people who genuinely deserve to be angry at the bullshit, it's usually used incorrectly in the first place.

      Toxicity has been on the forefront of a lot of people's minds lately thanks to extreme examples such as Waluigi fans harassing Sakurai on social media, so I think the idea is to try and discourage that sort of entitled behavior. The issue is that not all harsh and hyperbolic criticism is toxic behavior. Toxic behavior is targeted at harming or devaluing individuals, hence Jim reinforcing the idea to not harass people with names despite his strong criticisms. By contrast, claiming that an announcement is an April Fools' joke isn't harmful or devaluing any individuals, it's just mocking the decision itself. And I think Blizzcon attendees have the right to harshly criticize this kind of thing after paying hundreds of dollars to attend Blizzcon, especially if they didn't get much else that they were anticipating when they spent that money. Unfortunately toxic mentalities as a whole are currently so far in the forefront of our minds that it's easier to make the mistake of overgeneralizing the definition of toxic behavior and lumping the term with behaviors that aren't actually toxic. Entitlement IS a problem we need to do something about, this Blizzcon reaction just has absolutely nothing to do with that problem.

      Totally agree. I don't understand how you call a customer base "entitled" because they aren't getting what they want. This industry's entire existence is based on giving people the entertainment they want. The games industry is getting flat out told by its fans what kind of games they are interested in, but instead they are shoveling out predatory shite with no actual content because it makes them more money. THERE is your entitlement, game publishers. You call your customers entitled when things don't sell well enough and when things aren't received the way you want them to be. YOUR fucking source of revenue. Well, YOU are not "entitled" to people's money, fuck heads.

      Cameron Barenbrugge well said. I really never understood this basic principal and how it gets distorted into this ideology of disingenuousness. Then they reach the level where shareholders come in to play to make decisions that are not representative of the consumer base and naturally the consumer reject to this. But then the script changes and people call the consumer entitled when they are the ones paying the money to keep the company going it’s asinine but so prevalent. Thanks

      Arcade games definitely amped up the difficulty and control so people would be forced to pay more to play more. But that was still no where near as bad as today where gambling and no spending limits can drive people into bankruptcy. Unless you spend weeks at an arcade playing 24/7, that can’t happen.

      He was an ass, but he hasn't been proven wrong yet. We won't know if people really do want Classic until after it is out for a while. Personally, I'm predicting that it will be about as niche as the private servers after a couple of months once the initial hype dies down just due to the shear time commitment of the game which today's gaming demographic, or better yet, even the mmo demographic, just doesn't have time for. Which seeing as how the guy said things generally, it will mean he is right since in general people did not actually want to play Vanilla.

    It really all boils down to this: People don't like playing games on their phones all that much.
    Well, okay, let me qualify that. People don't like playing games with mid-to-high levels of complexity on their phones all that much. Phones are absolutely smashing when you're playing puzzle games, or games that require no more than a couple of taps on the screen at a time. The phone isn't the correct device to play anything more complex than that because your hands and your eyes are at unbreakable odds with each other. Your fingers need to touch the screen, your eyes need to see the screen, it creates an intensely frustrating game experience!

      Activision and Blizzard *merged* in 2007. They completed the merger in early 2008, a decade ago. That was before Starcraft 2 or Wrath of the Lich King. Not only that, but Blizzard retained full creative control when it came to the development and monetization and everything of their games. Activision doesn't dictate to Blizzard when it comes to what is in their games. Activision is a shit company in their own right (as Jim mentioned multiple times in his video), but don't push the blame off onto Activision just so you can protect your fanboy-ism for Blizzard's brand. Well sometimes gamers can, like any other segment of the society, have a false sense of entitlement. For example when acts of threatening and terrorizing developers or critics occur over something some gamers do not agree with. However, here entitlement is not even a thing. Blizzard as a company is built on the foundation of hardcore pc gamers. We the lovers - and die-hard lovers - of Warcraft, Starcraft, WoW, HoTS, Diablo and even older classics such as The Lost Vikings, are pc gamers. We kept diablo as a series alive when over a decade all we had to work with was Diablo 2 and its expansion! Now first they water down Diablo 3 and take it to heights of corporate douchebaggery, and then they expect us to be excited about a mobile game? All those years - not hours, days or months, but years - of pc rts and rpg gaming, and they expect us to shift all that over to mobile phones for one lousy mobile game? If nothing else, this is a huge entitlement on the part of Blizzard. It's like having you set up a family in NY and then on a whim expecting you to move to a studio apartment in Wisconsin just because!

      Things to understand about most Diablo 3 players: 1. The majority of them don't have high end systems and as such they certainly don't have high end phones. 2. Diablo 3 wasn't created to be as challenging as World of Warcraft, which feulled their salt as being the try hard child of Blizzards titles. 3. PC players bash those that play Diablo 3 on consoles to make them feel like only truly skilled and hard-core players play the PC version. 4. Due to how elitest they portray themselves they often bash players that ask questions in the forums claiming they know the answer but instead flood you with insults. 5. With all things cobsidered the next instalment of Diablo content being on mobile is the ultimate insult, as a World of Warcraft player that puts a smile on my face, yes I've played Diablo 3, yes I cleared a season and played on the highest difficulty and cleared all the set dungeons on Wizard, it took literally 3 weeks to do that playing casually, the game isn't hard and those pretending to be elitest on it are laughable.

    @427Arbok 6 років тому +56

    Consumer revolts are not in any way entitled. If anything, it's entitled for a company to believe it can walk-out anything it feels like and expect a positive reception. Diablo only exists as a series because of the devotion of its loyal fans. Blizzcon wouldn't even be conceivable without the outright love some people hold for the company and its IP's. To call it entitled for those fans to ask for something they actually want to buy is, well... that's what entitlement looks like, innit?
    Also, Jim, as a "right-wing fucknut evil person," I'mma say this: it is utterly inconceivable to me that anyone would think you're right-wing, but I don't disbelieve that you've been called as such. You're, at furthest right, a left-wing populist. But then, when we're talking about accusations of the sort, these are people who think anyone right of Chairman Mao is basically Nathan Bedford Forrest. Saying "The Holodomor happened" is... well, you get about the same reaction you would from telling Nazis that the Holocaust was real-you get accused of being a sheeple or propagandist for the _______ conspiracy. Extremist fucknuts have this odd tendency to attack anyone who isn't an also an extremist as "part of the problem."

      It was because Blizzard shielded Activision's reputation for a long time now ever since they were purchased in the early 2010's. But the grace period could only last so long for the long time fans of Blizzard. I saw the demise after playing Destiny 2 and the cash grab called "eververst" was implemented to pay wall players who purchased the full game of Destiny 2. I usually gave Blizzard the benefit of the doubt, since I've been with them ever since 1995, but its almost completely gone. EA on the other hand, does not have, or never had this shield or loyalty from their player, which made people call out their blatant push for microtransaction easier. But I think most of the hardcore fans of Blizzard is beginning to wake up after this mockery, and hopefully we all become wiser game consumers, buying/purchasing things that add value or entertainment at a fair price. Otherwise, there won't be any point in gaming anymore, it'll just be a beautiful form of gambling, which most mobile games are.

    Yes Jim, thank you. Your voice is so important. The numbers for these micro transactions are really just insane. Everyone should know that the actual developers, the texture artists, the generalists, don't get any significant portion of the micro transaction sales. Just take customization items for example. Activision pays a General 3D artist $20/hr(if they're lucky) or a salary(which would be even worse) to make a customizable item. Being generous lets say it takes 10hrs to complete a customizable skin for DLC. The skin costs $4.99 for the customer. The artist takes home $200 for their work. How much does the CEO take from this? Well the company sees that the skin over it's lifetime was purchased by 5,000 players. Or $24,950. I would wager that the higher ups take most of that for their bonuses. I left the games and visual effects industry because of numbers like these. Young, innocent people are being brainwashed into forking over their labor for a fraction of its value. I was one of them until I woke up to this fact. There are many like me and there will be more. $200 in labor cost for $25,000 in revenue. Still not enough for Activision shareholders.
