So check this out - we are at an Electrify America station, about to plug in a Tesla Model 3. And if this works, this opens up a world of possibilities for Tesla owners. We will no longer be locked in to only using Superchargers for DC fast charging, and possibly open up new routes across the US. CCS is the other dominant plug type - this is the official “standard” for charging in the US, so basically any new vehicle that comes out will be using this port, and any fast charger that is installed will be using this plug as well. And it's the same kind of restriction here - only green port vehicles can use green plug chargers. Though the advantage of this plug is that it is open to a variety of vehicles and a variety of charging station manufacturers. You aren’t locked into a specific vehicle OEM and you aren’t locked into a particular brand of charger. So in comes this adapter - what this is basically doing is converting the CCS plug into a Tesla plug so it fits in Tesla vehicles.

Are you to weak it took three time to out on that adapter? Maybe go your local Gym to get stronger!
Ordered a harumio OEM tesla ccs adapter and looking forwards to it arriving. It seems there’s tons of super chargers on major highways, etc for trips…but non-tesla charging stations dominate the shopping centers, in city areas, etc. it will be really nice to use one of those stations instead of not being able to charge at all. I can imagine now the sour looks of other non-tesla owners using their charging stations lol. Also, it’s getting to the point on the west coast that there’s TOO many teslas and there tends to be short and medium waits at popular supercharging stations. There’s ALWAYS open CCS stations so I’ll just use those instead of waiting
the reason the adaptor is only in Korean is because there is Hyundai’s turf, so more CCS stations than Tesla, very likely Tesla will not catch up the Korean market in terms of charging network. Same goes with Taiwan.
But these adaptor will mostly needed when California has busy Tesla DC charging stations. In NA, the Tesla charging network will blow CCS network for miles far.
Technically the charger is inside the car, and the tower outside is just the power supply. Also the CCS and the Tesla plug have the same connections. So yes, just a fairly simple update inside the car to ensure the supply and charger handshake correctly. I think it might only be the American market Teslas that still come with this “Tesla specific” connector, Eu certainly has gone to the more common CCS connector.
For AC charging this is true. For DC Fast charge (CCS and SCs) the rectifiers are not in the vehicle and installed outside of the users view (usually fenced in to obstruct the look of heavy industrial equipment). This allows the rectifiers to be large enough to convert Grid AC to DC at a rate of up to 350kw
As another commenter pointed out, this is only true for AC charging. DC charging the "charger" is truly a charger. You're correct that EU Tesla's now have CCS2 standard
Great video, Alex! Also, I’m going to need royalties for that clip of my wrist plugging in our ID.4. 😂 - Brandan
AHHH you're right! haha
Was pretty surprised to see Upper Sandusky on your video. I am from Tiffin and live in Norwalk.
I haven't found myself wanting for charging stations, but it is good to know things are progressing.
Yup, I use that charger a decent amount traveling in northern Ohio!
You are an excellent communicator....great video 🙏
Thanks so much!
Very well explained. Thank you for the insight and overview.
Please be aware that 400V Vehicles are always limited to 200kW avg. power. Teslas charge with speeds over 200kw is going out of Spec, by using the range between max -> avg charging power.
That's funny. Europe has always used CCS2 even for Tesla!
The EA 350kw is at the higher voltage so it only works for 900vdc charging.
Very helpful! Thanks, Alex!
🙌
Picked one up from the Harumio source. Took about two weeks from order to delivery. Flawless transaction. Used the adapter on an EA charger yesterday. Worked just fine-clunkier than Tesla SC for sure but great to have as an alternative.
Definitely!!
How much did it cost to buy it?
@@H.avery355 $309 USD delivered
Thanks great Video I just purchased from the website thank you again
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Electrify America? And it worked? Like wasn't broken?
Well presented. Not a lot of extraneous, time-wasting intro, music, etc.
Much appreciated 🙌
So if you dont have ccs adapter support not installed , what are your options ? Is it a software or hardware can Tesla install it. I wish I waited to buy until I saw you video
I'm working on a follow up video this weekend on how to add support to your car :)
@@Sibs thanks that would be great , I’m especially curious to know your thoughts if it is a hardware fix, if Tesla will void Warrenty ,then it’s not worth it .
All you need to know is that you can’t get the Tesla OEM CCS1 adapter in the US.
You technically can, but it's gotten more difficult
I got my adapter when Tesla first had them available in their store. I didn’t realize I need a retrofit. Now I can’t get the ECU 😡
Will this work on USA Tesla in Europe on Superchargers with CCS plug? Or fo Tesla block 3rd party adapters on Superchargers?
Europe uses CCS2 and there's already an adapter for older Tesla vehicles available. All new Tesla's in the EU come with a CCS2 port
@@Sibs yup i know that but i have Plaid 2021 USA car with type 1 plug. Need some adapter so i can use CCS2 on V3 Superchargers in Europe
Tesla already sells a CCS2 adapter in Europe, but not sure if it's compatible for US cars
Can you use this adapter for a J-1772 level 2 charger as well, or do you need to buy a separate adapter?
No, the pin mapping is slightly different, so it does not work for Level 2 charging.
Would the lectron be a better choice?
No. The lectron CCS adapter just mimics the Chademo adapter, so its limited on power and super bulky as a result. This passice adapter is the best solution assuming you have CCS adapter support
@@Sibs Plus it's $640
Lol this is why all other other electric car owners hate us
Enough already with this Bs KWh and percentage. Talk about how many miles you added and how much it cost you per mile and how long were you there.
Miles is an imperfect measurement system, as it fluctuates with efficiency of driving. kWh is consistent and never changes.
Great video, Alex! Appreciate the details on how to get this thing -- now if Tesla would *finally* release it officially in the US, purchase would be easier, and likely cheaper -- hope that happens soon.
Thank you! Definitely needs to release in the US soon. Unfortunately I think the looming retrofits are holding them up
The CCS adapter may be worth the $300 but, as Alex notes, if you can't use it because of your Tesla's lack of support or you don't need EA stations because you have plenty of Superchargers around you then don't buy it. But wait, Alex also mentioned crowded Supercharger stations so there's a case where you might want the adapter as a backup. As for road trips, I'm headed out soon on a cross-America trip and there are certain areas where there are no Superchargers such as the entire Navajo Nation in Arizona. But that region also has no EA charge stations and a quick look around the country appears to show that EA stations are mainly present only where Superchargers are already there. I'll be carrying the 110V adapter, the NEMA 14-50 adapter and the J1772 adapter (and locking ring) hoping to cover those areas where Superchargers are not available. We'll see and meanwhile I've been pestering Elon (on twitter) to add Superchargers in many places where travelers congregate.
Definitely lots to consider. These charging networks are definitely targeting higher traffic areas first, but we'll need them across the country eventually
Make sure you get this adapter for charging at RV campsites. Make sure it is Approved for EVs.
Parkworld 885378C EV Charging Adapter NEMA TT-30P to 14-50R (ONLY for EV or Tesla use, NOT for RV) (One Piece Compact Adapter)
RV hookups commonly have 110v and the TT-30P 99 % of the time. If you're lucky they have 14-50 plug also.
The worst range anxiety I ever had was trying to drive my Bolt between Bluff, UT and Gallup, NM. Navajo Route 12 is a terrible place to have your guess-o-meter tell you that the battery is going to hit zero 30 miles before the next supercharger…and there’s not even any level 2 showing in PlugShare. I misread my charging plan in Bluff and left too soon. There was no cell signal in Bluff for me to verify distances. I was only saved by a miracle: The absolute worst road construction for at least 20 miles of 10-20mph speeds. The guess-o-meter stayed at the same number through the whole zone and then some.
I arrived in Gallup with 30 miles to spare!
@@brendykes6599 I’ve had to drive out there for work and the supercharger in Gallup saved my life. Next time I just got the company to rent me a car, no chance I drive my model 3 through there again
Can anyone offer a recommendation. My daughter has a 2016 Tesla 3 and has moved to a small college town, in an apartment. No Supercharger in town, and a few destination chargers. Charging is a BIG issue. Close by is a Level 3 charging station that takes Chademo and CCS. I don't think I can wait for Tesla to come out with CCS and wiring upgrade. Is my only choice Chademo? Will one of those adapters work? I hate to buy old tech but I am getting desperate...
I would recommend either a CHAdeMO adapter, or finding a 120V outlet she could use. I also made this video a while ago, but has some potential options. ua-cam.com/video/eVmaGMThTbM/v-deo.html
I got mine last week, works great. it makes me feel better when traveling during holidays, I am not lock to just Tesla superchargers.
Nice!!
Yep when you especially live near popular State Parts as well as RV adapter too!
It would be great if tesla didn’t put inferior chips in model y and 3 the last half of 2021 built in California. These chips were used due to chip shortage but they don’t support ccs charging. When Tesla opens up superchargers to others it just means longer lines and longer waits to charge. Tesla has been using chips that supported ccs charging since 2020. Virtually every other ev made since 2020 will be capable of using ccs except the $60 grand teslas made in 2021, less than a year ago. Thanks Elon
A "chip" is a switching device, it doesn't affect communication.
.
The "chip shortage" was for "$1" basic chips. Nothing too sophisticated.
@@rogerstarkey5390 another result of the “$1 not too sophisticated “ chip shortage was published by cnbc 2-7-2022, it resulted in tesla excluding one of the two electronic control units in the steering racks in China built model Y and 3, sounds like the chip shortage is affecting how tesla in building vehicles.
Roger you are incorrect that chip is literally the difference in the 3rd and 4th generation units. Those units were installed haphazardly and probably as a response to the chip shortage at the time. It is very posible that Tesla will fix their cutting corners but should probably be held accountable in some way otherwise.
In Europe I have ac/ccs port on my Tesla for charging not that little one as in USA.
Thanks to EU regulation. So much better
@@alastairclark9423 better? Heavier and clunky - YES, better - NO :)
What is Tesla waiting for? Elon, the company you already own that that starts with a “T” (Tesla), needs more of your attention please.
Bummer!! Wish this video came out 8 weeks ago!! Getting ready to head out on another road trip with my Model Y towing a 17' travel trailer. I wanted another option for charging (other than the CHAdeMO I have) so I bought one on eBay. Yeah, paid through the nose for it ($900.00) and I don't trust CHAdeMO at all. Besides CHAdeMO being SLOW, I don't think I got but 50% of the chargers to work. I spent many hours on the phone with tech help when I did a 25K trip to all the 48 states last year! Quite often I would have to find a camp ground earlier in the day and charge overnight with the car plugged with the Tesla cable and a Nema 1450 adapter. Just hope I have better luck on this trip!
Wow! Thanks for sharing. This adapter will definitely open things up a ton for Tesla drivers (hopefully at a lower cost, too)
$300 a Rip off. Everyone gets free money to put in the chargers. We get to pay for higher electrical rates, higher insurance rates, and DMV adds to my Tesla registration because I need to pay more road taxes then an ICE car. Now its just 300, oh and buy your own charge cable now. At least with gas they all were the same no nozzle
Thanks …Tesla y salvaged this will make a big difference
My good friend is also Alan Ginsberg!! Small world!! Any chance ??from Florida and cape cod.
How to add CCS support to your Tesla: ua-cam.com/video/XH22SfePBho/v-deo.html
I ordered one from Korea. Tesla sells them everywhere except the USA. It is the real thing and it is not recommended by experts to buy anything but. I believe you should have this to complement everything else in your "Charging Bag".
Thank you! I just ordered mine. $309 shipped to Wyoming. I want the adapter for peace of mine. An unexpected road trip may save me if Tesla supercharger is not available. Thank you….great video.
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out 🙂
Not sure why you have annoying music in the background while narrating your video. Listen for yourself on headphones.
Great vid. Thanks. In FL, Tesla SCs are about $0.48/kW. FPL EVoution at 350 KW (Shared) is $0.30/kW. A huge price difference. Kinda explains why CCS Combo Adapters are not available in US. Folks would avoid Tesla's SCs
Well the way supercharger prices are going ev charger is actually cheaper to charge
For overnight camping or emergency charging, Make sure you get this adapter for charging at RV campsites. Make sure it is Approved for EVs.
Parkworld 885378C EV Charging Adapter NEMA TT-30P to 14-50R (ONLY for EV or Tesla use, NOT for RV) (One Piece Compact Adapter).
It's under $40 USD.
RV hookups commonly have 110v and the TT-30P 99 % of the time. If you're lucky they have 14-50 plug also.
Great for camp mode on cross country travel. I save on hotels.
I have that adapter, but the charging is so expensive compared to Tesla thst I just don’t use it.
I’m gonna have to get one because living out in Oklahoma electric vehicle infrastructure is not too great at the moment. My favorite place to camp is about 3.5 hours away without any super chargers in the middle, only a couple CCS. If I took the Tesla suggested route it would add 3 hours to my trip 😩 Going to order one of these adapters to be able to get those few extra miles I need, worth it for the camping lol. Awesome video!
Nice! Good to hear. I would double check to make sure you have support but otherwise that's awesome!
Same... Oklahoma has a very limited charging network in general and I think there are only 5 superchargers currently. It can be a challenge if you want to spend much time off of I-40 or I-35
Same in Nebraska. Absolutely nothing on major routes Hwy 20 and Hwy 2 which are also major tourist routes. Wind and temps affect range such that that is limiting even when charging from home. Also charging opportunities are limited with driving north/south across state lines. I am NOT charging for 4 hrs in a town with 300 population on what should be a 5 ht trip, nor am I willing to drive for 1 hr to spend 1 hr charging and then drive 1 hr back to get on route in western Nebraska.
I just wanna know why Tesla can make their supercharger adapters so small and minimal but the standard is so bulky, like why didn’t others adopt the smaller adapter approach. The CCS adapter looks so old 😂
The main reason is they use the same pins for both AC and DC charging. On CCS these are separate pins, thus the bulk.
@@Sibs ahhh, just wish it wasn’t so bulky. Maybe in the future!
saying "kw" mystified and irked me in a way I didn't know was possible. It has more syllables than just saying "kilowatt" and is doesn't mean anything unless you already know. Oddly enough, you then said "kilowatt hour".
Oh no 😂 just trying to mix things up, never anything intentional
WOW that thing is HUGE, will it put any undue stress on the Tesla charge port? Does the location of the Tesla charge port work with the CCS stations without blocking other stalls?
Smaller than the Chademo adapter and didn't put any stress on the port from what I noticed. And for CCS stations, it depends. Most sites design for a variety of vehicles and with longer cables, so not a huge deal
When I had a Chevy Bolt, the CCS plug's weight would pull it down so it wouldn't lock properly. The solution was to carry a wooden dowel and wedge it under the plug. Perhaps the same works here?
I just ordered one with a case for $334. Based on my normal road trip routes it looks like EV piggybacked on Tesla's research and located their chargers within a few miles of the SuperChargers so it really doesn't open up any NEW territory for me but would provide options should the SCer be congested.
My '21 MYP not CCS enabled. How do you enable it? I'm waiting on '22 MYP I will check for this when I get it in a month or two
Check out the forum post linked in the description. It walks through the DIY process to add it. Right now Tesla is NOT doing retrofits for it.
MERCH IS HERE : sibs-shop.com
I just ordered thru the site though I looked it up. Great price, thanks for the tip. Having just come back from a 2000 mile trip, options would have been nice.
Hope you enjoy it!
I'm interested in your video, do we have a chance to work together?
Thanks Alex. Great video. I definitely think Tesla needs to sell this adapter in the U.S. since superchargers are going to be opened up to all cars. Overall that’s a good thing but Teslas need to be able to charge everywhere too. Thanks again for the great video!
And now they are! Thanks!
Have a 2021 MY and just checked “additional information” under the software tab and CCS is enable on my vehicle. I want to purchase the adapter as a back up for the times Tesla Superchargers are not as readily available as the EA or EVGO network. Always good to have options. Thanks for the video.
Definitely! Thanks for watching!
Adaptor now available in the US
Yes 🙌
Thanks for the video ! I just got the adapter today from Harumio it took about 10 days to get it in Quebec… can’t wait to try it 😎. I love the idea of having additional options for fast charging ⚡️
Nice!!
Thank you. I order my with Harumio. I'm waiting for the delivery. My car support the adapter. I really appreciate the info.
Happy to help!
cool... but do you think Tesla will change to CCS in the future or it will continue having it own plug in North America
I think they'll stick with their own plug. It's just so much lighter and easier to use
You're wrong, the Tesla j1772 adapter does lock to the car just like the ccs adapter
Not on both sides. You can walk up and just unplug the J1772 plug from the car. The adapter locks on, but the plug doesn't stay out.
Thanks! I’ve been trying to figure out how to get one of these from S Korea to the US. The link made that super easy.
Good to hear. I ended up buying 2 more and they came within 10 days
Okay, but where is my adaptor so I can charge my non Tesla car at a Tesla fast charger? Oh it is still a walled garden, I forgot.
Thanks a lot for information! Very useful and helped to make a decision to buy CCS adapter
Good to hear! Double check you have support but best of luck :)
There is a need for this product due to the limitations of relying on Tesla’s charging network. Take charging Houston’s south side. There is a massive gap where Electrify America has coverage. Same in Pensacola, Florida where you have to travel to Foley, Alabama to charge. Relying on Tesla in Louisiana as of earlier this year meant 7 DC Fast chargers but when EA was added meant 12. This is not to mention the DC Fast charging CCS expansion occurring with Biden’s bill which will further limit Tesla owner charging options. This is a larger problem once we add the introduction of non Tesla vehicles to already crowded superchargers but are not granted access to the 2nd largest network.
Now I understand. Tesla supports their communication protocol and the CCS protocol. Probably because they were forced to by the EU. That also means the car's Tesla connector can be retrofitted with a CCS connector. Sadly, it looks like Tesla's awesome connector design will be phased out.
trick the car to precondition by navigating to a supercharger anyway.
True!!
Isn’t supercharging in the mid 30 cents per KWh? Electrify America ‘s price of 47 cents is no bargain! Add the cost of the adapter, and you would be hard pressed to see any price advantage for a very long time! (Like never)
Depends on the area of the country. It's around that price where I'm at, but in California it's way more expensive to supercharge.
Yes but the ability to go on secondary roads not yet supported by the SC network (and might never be) could be worth the extra cost to many of us.
I just road tripped thru California last week... SC are 58 cents /kWh in the city, and 48 cents outside the city... I bought Pass+ on EA for a month, so only paid 31 cents kWh.
i would definitely buy one, the problem my 2021 Model Y doesn't support it. I have to wait for the retrofit.
Ah dang. I'm in the same boat. Might try the DIY method if Tesla doesn't announce it soon.
That's strange. My 2020 Model Y (purchased in May 2020( says that it is CCS enabled.
@@robocheme880 I think it was initially there but because of part shortages it was removed and reintroduced later. Hopefully I won't get charge for the retrofit
Odd my MYP 9/12/20 delivery clearly says enabled. We shall see soon.
my 21 MYP is not CCS enabled either, will have to wait as well
Any port in a storm, but get out your wallet.
I wonder when Tesla will offer the retro fit on the "not supported" vehicles.
They're supposed to be launching the adapter in the US by end of year, so hopefully around the same time
The most direct route between Boise & Reno has a huge gap in the Tesla Supercharger network. The CCS charge will make for a much better trip as the route planner says to drive for almost 5 hours at 55mph max. -it’s the only route I’ve seen that my Bolt can do faster than the model Y.
As of a year ago there were free CCS chargers across Utah. Teslas can join the free fun with this adapter.
Wow! Interesting! This would definitely help for Tesla owners looking to take that trip.
The difficult part about the Boise to Reno route is the insanity of the other drivers on the road. Driving my Ford F-150 Raptor I had a semi run me off the road while doing 5 over the speed limit. Apparently he wanted to go 10-15 over and I was slowing him down on that long two lane road.
My model 3 is Not Enabled I would love to see a video on how to fix this a walk through if possible!
Working on it!! Just have to wait for parts to arrive :)
There are UA-cam videos on how to change the ECU. BUT as of right now the only place to purchase it is though Tesla and the parts store gave me the n/a. Bummer since an area I go to in the summer only has the J1772 chargers for Tesla. No SC available except for ChargePoint. Thanks for the explanation though. Good video.
Where exactly is this place you describe where there's an electrifyamerica charger but no tesla superchargers given the sheer number of superchargers.
Literally talked to someone today who said there are some routes in AZ that don't have superchargers, but have EA stations. Plus this gives you more flexibility of where you'd like to stop
@@Sibs Try driving to Alaska!
Very strong opinion on this!! Why should we let teslas charge on CCS if we can’t use super chargers?
I got one of these a week ago and found it very tight to fit on the CCS plugs. Very hard to push on all the way and very tight to try to pull it off. Have you found this as well?
Didn't notice when I was testing. Is that the case for all plugs?
@@Sibs It has been in the several that I've tried it with (only 4 so far)
In Europe the Tesla has a ccs port and all super cahrgers are ccs too so Tesla can use Tesla and none Tesla chargers . It's only USA that's weird
Using colors was a great idea.
To add a data point: I have a 2021 Model Y that was built 3 days before the switch to the 2022 model and it does not have CCS support. So I think it’s safe to say that 2021 and earlier Model Ys do not have CCS support.
Interesting! According to the forum post I linked, after Oct 2020 seems to be when they started adding it, but there's some nuance because they apparently used a stripped down version in some cars without CCS Adapter Support.
@@Sibs Yeah, my car was built at the end of October 2021.
There’s no clear cut age cutoff as people have stated that they have cars built well into 2022 that are not capable while models built earlier sometimes do.
Tesla finally just launched these in the US! Kinda want one but damn they’re pricey 😭
About what I was expecting honestly. It's cheaper than the Chademo adapter was ($650)
Hold on is this like an old video uploaded just now? The model 3 has the CCS DC port on it. I have it. I'm confused how this is currently valid.
Title says "USA" for this reason. US cars still have the Tesla proprietary port.
I believe the 350kW EA stations max out at 800V, 437.5A. That might be why you can only get ~175kW with a 400V architecture vehicle like the Model 3?
Oh, possibly! I didn't check the amperage rating of this charger, so you could be right.
Not sure how old your Tesla is, all I can say is all of the Tesla Superchargers in Ireland are CCS only and all 2022 Tesla Model 3 have CCS power sockets
I'm in the US and all Tesla's here use Tesla's proprietary port.
YES Tesla Need to make it available in the USA!
Thanks for the video! I’m away from my car for another week, so I won’t be able to confirm whether my car is ECU enabled until then. I have a M3 that was built in August 2020 and I received it in September. The forum mentions October 2020 being the potential cutoff between a Gen3 and Gen4 charge port. I tried to get a confirmation from my app, but that didn’t give any info.
I have had the chademo connector for a couple years, but I’m the type of guy who wants all adapters types for those “just in case” scenarios I’m on an unexpected/unplanned area with no superchargers or chademo chargers nearby.
No problem! Let me know if yours has it. It's in that weird in between spot that may or may not. I believe all new cars have support enabled
I’ll find out next Friday and keep you posted. Again, thanks for the video! I was just watching another Tesla UA-camr video on the removal (or opt-in) option for the mobile connectors that Tesla is doing with new car purchase… that’s a whole other can of worms that I’m lucky I don’t have to deal with.
It looks like my car made the cut! I verified today under the “Additional Vehicle Information” that my Aug 2020 M3 build has the CCS adapter capability Enabled.
I’ll definitely be purchasing that adapter in the next week or two. Do you remember how long it took for you to get yours?
This is actually tiring. There is no age cutoff on Tesla cars for this functionality. It was given Willy nilly regardless of model, tier the only consistency in implementation was 100% ineligibility before 2020. Post 2020 builds is a roll of the dice which ECU Tesla went with in each car.
That is very neat. Now I need one for the bolt to charge on the tesla net work. It would be awesome to get one for my car.
Adapters work fine, same in Europe we use them for US EVs..we got 220volts here..or 380volts..🆗️🇪🇺🇺🇸
Does it work on USA Tesla on Superchargers in EU with CCS plug? Can Tesla block that kind of adapters?
Do you know if your CCS car can fast charge at a Tesla station and what adapter do you need to accomplish that?
My car still has the Tesla plug, so charging rates aren't affected.
43 cents is a lot
I’m curious what people are getting for charging speeds with this adapter. I’ve heard you can’t max it out when using it for the Tesla. Anyone have speeds they can share
I'm working on a follow up video now, but I hit close to 200kW the other day.
@@Sibs cool thanks
I've been able to use CCS with an adapter (expensive) from Lectron. It's not perfect and has some issues, so this seems like an interesting solution.
The Lectron adapter is really just emulating the CHAdeMO adapter, so it's severely limited. This one actually works with the car and can achieve higher charging speeds.
Just out of curiousity, which reshipper did you use? Harumio is currently out of the adapters.
I used harumio, but also got one initially using everytime mailbox as a forwarder
I am surprised to know that Tesla's were unable to charge on non tesla chargers before.
Yeah it's wild! I've heard many people say the same thing
It’s called API compatibility
If I see a tesla at a EA station plugged into the only 350kw when there’s a lot of 150kw chargers available. I’m clicking it to stop charging
I get that, it’s not really fair teslas get superchargers but soon they’ll open those up to everyone
Why? It would still be able to use the full 500A, even if it's pack voltage is lower. I was able to get 190 kW from one a few days ago.. Besides, you'd be surprised how many busted chargers there are at EA stations. At one of the places I went, both the 150 kW chargers were busted, leaving only the 350 kW working..
In Australia most of the fast charging stations have a cord for tesla built in on one side and a cord for other cars like the Nissan Leaf
Might be worth looking at the Tesla port you have, in lots of countries Tesla have already moved to CCS, it’s mainly America that still use the old “Tesla” plug.
You said in your video that the level 2 adapter does not lock into the car when you car is locked. Just like the CCS, it absolutely locks in. Did in my model 3. Does on my new model S.
Sorry, didn't make it too clear. I meant the charging cable doesn't lock to the adapter when using the level 2 adapter, so anyone could just walk up and unplug you. The adapter does lock to the car though, like you said.
@@Sibs I just had this problem on 3 occasions at a hotel in Colorado. Somebody just tampered with the plug enough to interrupt charging. Each time I had to go to the car to get it to start charging again. I have never had that issue before or since.
Thanks for the video!
Of course!
Does this work on grandfathered Model 3 and Model S? 2018 and older?
Check your software details to verify, but probably not.

J1772 adapter locks to the car just fine.
It locks to the car, but the cable doesn't lock to the adapter. I don't think I was super clear about this, sorry!
How much is the converter? Ive seen ranging from $280 to $750
Retail is around $250-$310 USD, but resellers are charging a ton for it
@@Sibs and will the shipping cost from Korea to the US be really high?
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
We use similar adapter in Europe to charge older Model S and Model X at CCS Chargers.
The adapter can be ordered with Tesla and the ranger will install an additional ECU in the car, so that it can be used.
This is a very similar system, but the adapter can not be used on the US Tesla cars.
If you want more information, please feel free to ask.
I'm hoping they go a similar route here. Buy the adapter and get the retrofit included
How much did it cost to get the ECU retrofit in order to use the adaptor?
@@barryccollyer2429 ECU retrofit including adapter was at 199 €.
But it was necessary to use the V3 SuperCharger. Therefore Tesla made it very cheap.
@@barryccollyer2429 I had my UK MS adapted to CCS this last week. It cost £208 for the tech to turn up, pull up the rear seat, install the new electronic comms unit, reset the software and hand me the UK CCS adaptor. Took a little over an hour.
Where did you buy that adapter peace at?
