I had a few of these old unit using T1 1/4 bulbs. Once repaired another one broke. Eventually I got fed up with it when finally a bulb broke and I was chasing a ghost error for hours just because I trusted that bulb. So I replaced all of them with various LEDs and also modofied the circuits to keep the LEDs happy. Happy ever since.

Thats the thing with bulbs: The broken filament moves around. It gives you a good reading on the meter and when you put it back into the unit the tungsten filament does not touch anymore and the bulb won't light up.

I rebuilt those battery packs out of NIMH AA batteries. They've worked fine so far. As long as there's not too much corrosion on the pack or contacts, they can be reused

4:27 you say it's 1 kHz out and at 6:50 Scott, you're adjusting to 18.500 000 GHz, yet the display on the generator was set to output 18.500 001 ! i.e. 1 kHz out!

Nice RF signal generator, can't beat HP quality. I had a similar issue with a very dim bulb. It looked all silvery inside the glass as the filament gave off deposits on the glass. It must have had a lot of hours on the little bulb at any rate. What happened to the display when it all went to zero's? Maybe just a loose connection on a board?

A unit to stay away from is the 8640B, as they have a set of plastic gears in them, which, with age, are bad to break. I've read several horror stories about them.

Electronics age like a fine wine.... Except capacitors......they're like a bout of IBS.
