    Pm:

      Which CeraVe moisturizer do you use? Because that may be too heavy for your skin. But apart from that, BHA should work well to smoothen your skin texture, and the retinol should help too. Still, I find the Ordinary Retinol formulations not great. You may be better off with a gel or lotion-like texture, but they are way more expensive 😕.
      And for how long have you been using that routine?
      And also, this would be the correct order of application:
      Am:
      La Roche Posay Effaclar cleanser
      Cerave moisturizer
      La roche spf
      Pm:
      Effaclar cleanser

      Either one of them can work. It mainly depends on your budget. The PC exfoliant also has a bit of an 'oilier' texture that The Ordinary doesn't have. However, the PC BHA gel doesn't have that oily feel to it.

      Generally, using a salicylic acid serum after the salicylic acid cleanser increases the risk of irritation and dryness over time. Therefore, I suggest keeping them separate.

    Hi, amazing video, thank you!
    Maybe I missed something, but what exactly is the reason why there is no need to wait between salicylic acid and niacinamide? Salicylic acid has slightly higher pH's, which means niacinamide has to be applied at least 30 minutes afterwards to avoid the products ''cancelling each other out'', or am I wrong?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  2 роки тому +1

      No, that is not true. But I know that article 😕 It would only be the case for the powder, and it is a concern for the chemist to formulate the product. So let's say you have Niacinamide powder at home and mix it with your acid, then the problem may arise because you mixed them in their pure forms without stabilizing them.
      The flushing that rarely happens is not because the pH is influenced but simply because the amount of Niacinamide is too high for your skin to tolerate. And some people experience it; I am one of them. But it also happens with Niacinamide only when not using the acid; for me, it happens with Paula's Choice 20%. It generally is more visible with the exfoliant since it loosens the dead skin cells, making Niacinamide or generally active ingredients that follow absorb better into the skin, so your skin is overwhelmed with its amount.

    • @valerija.lalikova
      @valerija.lalikova 2 роки тому +1

      @@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanks a lot, it makes total sense!
      And now I see that Paula's Choice BHA has definitely lower pH, so there shouldn't be any contradictions regarding that either.

      Yes, but not on the same day or same routine. So use the peel once a week in your evening skincare routine (or less often). And the Panoxyl 10% with Niacinamide on the other days, still you need to figure out the right frequency for the Panoxyl 10% as it can become very drying when used too often. Therefore I switched to a 4% Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser.

Also, if you are using the gentle face wash in the morning, you could potentially use that one in the evening as well; otherwise, you have too much SA in your skincare routine.
      So basically, you are not doing much wrong; you are just overusing all these products. So, I would stick to one treatment serum per day.

      Then, I use a 10% vitamin C serum + 5% niacinamide

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  2 роки тому +2

      It's because everyone just repeats what the other person is saying 😕 And if you have someone getting it wrong, everyone else will since the source is the same. (as people tend to just go with what a dermatologist/influencer says without doing any research on the person or the topic itself 😕)
      So every skin needs moisture, but water and a protective seal would be enough to relieve dry skin.
      Let's say your skin cannot hold on to water anymore because its natural function is compromised; you then can help it with a protective seal (oil, vaseline, dimethicone etc.). And add moisture (Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin etc.) or water to keep it that way for much longer so that the skin hopefully can recover.
      Now, if you have oily skin, natural oil production is not compromised, so your skin can still produce enough oil but lacks water. So while you wash your face, the skin absorbs some water, and the oil keeps it that way. So now, theoretically, you could add Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin etc., instead of plain water to keep it more hydrated looking for the entire day. As these ingredients absorb water and stay for longer that way, as water can quickly evaporate depending on the area you are in. (e.g., a very dry climate)
      So technically, you can use any humectant that keeps the water for much longer on oily skin. So if you use a moisturizer, it should be without these occlusive (fatty substances/mineral oils/plant oils, or silicon)
      Also, all these serums/exfoliants (water-based formulations) include water, so there is no need to add more water to them; they contain everything they need.
      Now from a business perspective, influencers/companies want to sell you more products to make more money, of course :)

    hiii, i was wondering if this skin care routine is proper for me, i have acne prone and very oily skin.
    currently have been doing this since 2 years now
    morning:
    1) cetaphil oily skin cleanser
    2) rose water as toner
    3) essence (loreal)
    4) niacinamide serum (ordinary)
    5) moisturiser (plum)
    6) sunscreen (dot & key 50spf)
    night: (currently)
    1) cetaphil oily skin cleanser
    2) rose water as toner
    3) essence (loreal)
    4) moisturiser (plum)
    5) rosehip oil
    now i want to add salicylic acid to it and i’m thinking of only using it at night (once or twice a week) as i’ve never tried a salicylic product before.
    is that better? to use it only at night before moisturiser?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  Рік тому +2

      Do you have great results with this routine, or is that why you want to add salicylic acid? 🤔
      But the order would be like this:
      Night:
      Cetaphil oily skin cleanser
      Salicylic acid
      Essence
      Rosehip oil
      Moisturizer
      Plant oils have a smaller molecular size than chemically made moisturizers, so therefore moisturisers should generally be used as the last step in a skincare routine. The exception might be a product that contains only hydration/humectants, but those are very rare.

      It's best to extract them with a tool, especially for blackheads; otherwise, they will not go away. But the routine may be too much for your skin.
      I would probably recommend something like this:
      Day Routine:
      Cetaphil oily skin cleanser - pat dry
      Rose water as toner
      Niacinamide serum (Ordinary)
      Sunscreen (Dot & Key 50 SPF) if you have sun exposure; otherwise, just leave it as it is
      Night Routine (every other day):
      Cetaphil oily skin cleanser - pat dry
      Salicylic acid - leave it as it is
      Night 2:
      Cetaphil oily skin cleanser - pat dry
      Lightweight gel-based moisturizer (if needed; otherwise, just clean your skin)
      This approach focuses on targeting the specific concerns you mentioned, with a simplified routine that could be less taxing on your skin.

      Hey :)
      What oil are you using?
      Have you noticed a decrease in acne since using your current products?
      Addressing your dandruff could help with your acne. Using a medicated shampoo designed for dandruff (with active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide) control can be helpful. Also, make sure to always dry that area well. If your hair and scalp are oily, washing your hair more often can help reduce both oil and dandruff. However, treating dandruff may not fully clear up acne, particularly if it's not just on your forehead or hairline. Factors like hormones, diet, stress, and genetics also affect acne. Since everyone's skin is different, if home treatments don't help your dandruff and acne, you might need to see a dermatologist for a customized treatment plan.

      If your skin tolerates the individual skincare products well, yes, this can work. However, if using the Salicylic Acid cleanser twice per day daily becomes too potent or makes your skin too dry, it's best to alternate between that one and a non-exfoliating acid cleanser, or simply wash your face with water. Additionally, it's important to address the root cause of your acne for better control, as it likely stems from internal factors such as stress, diet, or food intolerance.

      Anyway, I think the issue here is that you have a Niacinamide toner (I checked that website, and it's pure marketing so that people buy it because Niacinamide is very popular), and you have a Salicylic Acid serum.
      Technically if you have water-based products, you can apply them in any order. However, the toner's purpose was to remove the last traces of makeup and/or cleanser from the skin after washing it and to balance the skin's pH. Now I think it comes from a time when they used exfoliating acid cleansers that reduced the skin's pH, and then you adjusted it with the toner. But nowadays, you have so many skincare products that things are getting mixed up.
      Still, since you have the toner, it would be applied before the exfoliant if you are from the western world. If you are Asian, they tend to do it the other way around as they often do double cleansing (using an oil-based cleanser flowed by a regular gel or foaming cleanser). Ensuring that everything comes properly off the skin before applying the exfoliating acid.
      So there are different schools of thought.
      But you overall have the correct order of application.

      I do not know the article, but there is only one possibility, and that is when Salicylic Acid is in a cream formulation or oil formulation or Anhydrous Solution (without water). But exfoliating acids are generally used before since they are almost always water-based. Apart from that, it exfoliates the skin, loosens the dead skin cells on the skin surface, and gets even deeper into the skin so that the serums or generally skincare products you apply after penetrate better into the skin, giving you more benefits.

      So, what you need is a non-comedogenic hydrating product, such as a hyaluronic acid serum or a light moisturizing gel. It is recommended to avoid using heavy moisturizers or sunscreens as they can clog the pores.
      Here is a suggested skincare routine:
      Minimalist 2% SA + LHA Cleanser
      5% Niacinamide Serum (use three days a week, not every day)
      Hyaluronic Acid serum or Moisturizing Gel (for example, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel)
      Sunscreen fluid or mineral SPF

      @@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you so much!! I saw your other comment too where you said that I should not use SA and Niacinamide if I have dry skin but the problem is I am also suffering from closed comodones 😭 they are a lottt
      so what do I do now, I am so confused
      should I use them on alternate days? I will make sure to use a good non- comodogenic moisturizer :(

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  Рік тому

      @@Bellabliss3 Yes, you could use lactic acid or glycolic acid as the appropriate exfoliant for your needs. Salicylic acid (SA) may be too drying, and niacinamide might not be the best option either.
      Lactic acid is generally considered gentler and more hydrating than glycolic acid, making it a better choice for those with dry or sensitive skin. Look for a product with a low concentration of lactic acid (around 5-10%) to minimize the risk of irritation.

    Hi Melissa. I have just discovered your channel and this video. This video is very helpful thank you. Please could you recommend a skin care routine for hormonal cystic acne on the face? Currently I am cleaning the skin with a salicylic acid cleanser, then using salicylic acid serum first then niacinamide serum after followed by a moisturiser with SPF. Is this effective for cystic acne? I have tried benzoyl peroxide gel but that seems to be rather irritating for my skin. Please help! Thank you!

      Hello Dharmi,
      It sounds like a pretty drying combination you follow. But what products do you have? Can you list the name? And what gel did you try? Sometimes the formulation of the gel is also essential to consider. And do you have experience with Retinoids such as Adapalene? 🤔 And have you ever considered visiting a doctor?

      @@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Hi Melissa. Thanks for the reply. I am using the inkey list salicylic acid cleanser, the ordinary salicylic acid 2%, the ordinary niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Moisturiser I am using 'Eucerin UreaRepair replenishing face cream 5% urea'. The benzoyl peroxide I have used is called Acnecide 5%. I haven't tried retinoids yet. I have visited a doctor who has referred me to a dermatologist however I am still awaiting an appointment for that. Look forward to your reply.

      @@dharmid I think the combination is too potent/drying, and the cream may even cause more acne as it is too heavy and clogs pores.
      I have had a great routine here: ua-cam.com/video/nu1Wo9O_6e0/v-deo.html
      That worked well for me; you could exchange the benzoyl peroxide cleanser for the Inkey List cleanser.
      But overall, you could also wait for the doctor's appointment.

    wouldnt you use niacinimide first instead of salicylic acid?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  Рік тому +1

      Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant (beta-hydroxy acid) that penetrates deep into the pores, clearing them of excess oil, dead skin cells, and debris. By applying it first, you're helping to unclog and clean your pores, which can enhance the absorption of the products that follow.
      Niacinamide, on the other hand, is a water-soluble vitamin (vitamin B3) that works on the skin's surface to help improve its overall appearance, reduce the appearance of pores, and regulate sebum production.
      So, applying salicylic acid first can help enhance the efficacy of the niacinamide, as it helps clear the skin and make it more receptive to the benefits of the niacinamide.

    • @Vereign
      @Vereign Рік тому +1

      @@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Yeah Its just that online some people say to use niacinamide first since its water based and salicylic acid is oil based and would block it. I use the ordinary for both niacinamide and salicylic and I think the salicylic is actually water based.

      Hey! :) The routine looks good, although I don't think you need a moisturizer, unless it's a gel/oil-free one, in which case it may work. Start with a 5% Niacinamide serum, as you have the option. Use your Vitamin C serum when not using Niacinamide, so one in the AM and the other in the PM.
