- With Elder Scrolls 6 still a distant dream, many fans are wondering-can Bethesda really pull it off? After the disappointing reception of Starfield and Fallout 76, the pressure is higher than ever. In this video, I break down Bruce Nesmith’s recent comments about the “impossible” expectations for Elder Scrolls 6 and why the studio might be setting itself up for a fall. Has Bethesda fallen too far behind the competition, or can they recapture the magic of their previous successes like Skyrim and Oblivion?

I just dont understand how they could drop the ball so hard after the success of Skyrim. If it were my company I would have started production on the next Elderscrolls right away
Yep I can see what you mean. They did make fallout games and also started with Starfield, but the Elder Scrolls games are above them in my opinion.
A LOT of studios have done this over the last 10 years. Bungie with Destiny, Bethesda with Fallout 76 and Starfield, Bioware with Anthem. Destiny could have been one of the games of the decade with just a few tweeks, some patches. But Bungie refused to do anything. Dice had problems with the last battlefield game, mainly glitches, but at least they had the decency to patch them. And they’ve changed a character class dynamic that the players did not like.
If they wouldn't have made StarFail a game without soul and primarily procedurally generic worlds with nothing to explore I found Skyrim to have more replayability even without NG+ they turned NG+ into NG- there were less factions and unique side quests in Starfail and they had a story which included giant mechs vs giant bioweapons but didn't include it in the gameplay which could have saved the game imagine fighting a war in your mech across the galaxy and giving huge freedom to upgrade it and the narrative they could have weaved into it but they chose starman reincarnation instead.
They do not need to "outdue" themselves .. they just need to not frick it up
Yeah 100%. We all just wanna great game.
and what exactly do we expect?
a working game with no significant bugs, good mechanics and balance, up to date graphics, a compelling narrative and the feeling that we get a good value for money out of it.
If they kept the same development team as they did with Skyrim then I think it should be ok. If the are using the new DEI hires for Starfield then they are in trouble. Simple as that. Real Artists, writers and programmers need freedom to do their job right. DEI makes it impossible as they have so many check marks they have to watch out for any real creative thinking. Imagine telling Beethoven he had to include DEI instruments from around the world? Imagine telling Shakespeare he has to have DEI in his writing? They would be irrelevant because what made them special was they had freedom to express whatever they wanted without bureaucrats telling them what to do. Non Artistic/Creative people just needs to stay out of the way!
Yep you’re totally right. I can understand that Starfield was a totally different game to what they usually make, but still it just felt poorly made. We can only hope that ES6 will have no DEI nonsense.
Starfield was shockingly bad and boring. They won’t trick me again
Let’s hope Elder Scrolls is different 👀
@@JJGuidesUK it wont be... how could it... They spent 15 years on starfield and we got that..
Starfield is so bland, uninspired and boring it feels like it was made by AI.
they just need to keep it simple. Skyrim upgraded graphics. 100GB mod support, handcrafted map. and give us some storylines that draw you in.
Mind you many fans of Morrowind was recentful of Oblivion, fans of Oblivion was recentful of Skyrim. Vocal TES nerds are not the bulk of those who baught Skyrim or the ES6 else for that matter.
And this is why their comments about the critic score was so silly🤣
I think the root problem with Starfield, and for that matter Fallout 76, was going all in on padding the play time.
E.g., with collecting resources and base building, to try to imitate the survival genre at a time when that was already on its deathbed. The base building in Fallout 4 was already not a favourite of many gamers. Sure, SOME liked it, but for most it was an unrewarding chore, especially without a mod that uncapped resources. Most people either ignored it, or downloaded a mod like sim settlements to do it for them. And then Starfield doubled down on it and made it even worse by making it pretty much mandatory AND requiring even more resource gathering.
E.g., instead of just needing some perk, Starfield now had research to pad the time before you could make an upgrade.
And basically what I'm saying is that such padding doesn't make for a great gaming experience. If you take even the finest wine ever and dilute a glass of it in a gallon of water, sure, you can spend more time drinking it, but you won't enjoy it.
And I think that IF Bethesda realizes this, they'll do just fine.
They wouldn't need to worry that the fans would crucify them if the game is anything less than perfect if they hadn't burned through so much good will with Fallout 76 and Starfield.
Kingdom come deliverance 2 is going to completely blow out anything Bethesda releases in less than half the time since Skyrim was released to now. Everyone who hasn't played Kingdom come deliverance is missing out and you'll never find a Bethesda game with as much love as warhorse studios has for their games and fan base.
High chance it'll flop just because the people who are engaged and/or nostalgic for the series might just be too old. I was 12 when i got hooked on Morrowind and Skyrim was the last game i remember really being able to binge, coincidentally my last year of university as well.
I'm 34 now, I'd hesitate to buy a new installment just because i won't be able to sink in the time i'll want to!
Now, someone who was 12 when Skyrim came out.. They're still gonna be well halfway their 20ies. Kids of their own, work, etc.
Wouldn't be surprised if that factor alone will take out 1/3 of the sales they'd had if they'd just come up with anything within a decade after Skyrim
Yeah that’s an interesting point you make. They will have to try and hook in an all new generation of people to play this game and enjoy the world of Elder Scrolls. Let’s see what happens…
not reaching the expectations of the players? are they stupid? Just make an Oblivion or Skyrim or a mix of both in a new world with a new story and we'll be happy.
Or maybe the whole of tamriel playable I mean at this point they should just do that instead of one province like skyrim because it took more than a decade to release the next game
I think it’s honestly them just covering their backs in case of failure. It’s really disappointing as they should back themselves to do a great job
If they're already making up excuses then it's gonna be bad. They say our expectations are too high we want a new skyrim. Graphics don't matter just a solid single player campaign open world with lots of extra side quest story content they've had what 13 years to work on this since skyrim. They just don't want to take the time for a single player game when they got cash grabs like skyrim 36th release 20th anniversary edition coming out soon. And elderscrolls blands and castles cash grabs.
let's be honest. even if the next The Elder Scrolls is a masterpiece and the most innovative Bethesda game of all, some will still mock it and try to make it look worse. There's been a strange "air of doom" around Bethesda lately. ubisoft or EA don't have the same thing, even though they release a lot more mediocre games. I feel that nowadays a game just can't be just ok. if it's not 10/10 then people will be bashing it. and if it gets even one lower rating, a big bunch of certain types of channels will publish a big bunch of videos declaring the destruction of Bethesda. it's enough for me if it's just The Elder Scrolls game. since it has better graphics than skyrim and a few more things to do, it's ok for me. i still play skyrim from time to time. and if they can take what worked before and learn from starfield then that's fine with me. Bethesda isn't perfect, but I think it's better than Ubisoft or EA. i just want to see the next game and go adventuring and dungeon crawling, that's enough for me. people have the right to want better, but sometimes what people want is not realistic. especially if there are a lot of people because everyone wants different things. everyone has their own dream version of each game. Bethesda should do more, but I also think people should understand that making games is not easy. I like starfield myself. it might not be my favorite game, but I don't think it's bad either. and I often notice that the discussion around it is quite exaggerated and escalated. some say it's the worst game ever, some say it's average, and others like it, but know there's room for improvement. I don't play Bethesda games for the graphics or game mechanics, I play for Lore and the world itself. even starfield has a lot of hand designed places to find and poke and that's often enough for me. i just want them to take what worked and make the next game better etc. but as I said, we don't live in the days of Skyrim's release, the life span of games is usually shorter and the discussion around them escalates easily. 7 - 8 is not enough anymore. and it's quite ironic that if the game is really "mid", how can you make such a big fuss about it? of course, there were fewer games in the past and these days they are released at a pretty fast pace. but yeah this commode got a bit long. but still I hope and wait for the next game. have a good day everyone!
You’ve made a great point there about Ubisoft and EA. They don’t seem to get as much flack as Bethesda does and I think it’s because Bethesda is held to a higher standard. Let’s just hope they make ES6 a game we all enjoy.
@@JJGuidesUK wisely said. maybe people are just used to Ubisoft and EA being... well, you know. but let's hope the next Elder Scrolls is good. have a good day.
This is one of those cases where they need to copy as much as possible from their previous game. Obviously, the quest variety and NPC interactions are just a couple things on a list of many that could be innovated on. But they need to go back to what works. Give us a big world with lots of little details. Give us that true Bethesda experience we grew to love in the early 2000's, just on a bigger scale. Perhaps multiple Zones instead of just one. Do that and I believe ES6 will be a success.
bethesda pro tip... hire passionate game developers and not hack actiivist, if modders are kicking your teeth in, something is clearly wrong. hire the damn modders
After playing Buldars gate 3 I can't play a game with a shitty story so for the first time ever I'm not buying any new Bethesda game without watching reviews on it they've just failed to many times it was the same with assassins creed and call of duty they were great in the beginning but now they feel empty with no soul
100% see where you’re coming from. There are so many studios right now so create great content
Bethesda has completely lost touch with the fans and also with its own games.
The Bethesda games never really had good stories, but we could look past that because the world allowed us to explore it and write our own stories.
I haven't played Starfield and I will never play it because I knew before it was released what a piece of crap it was going to be.
We are now dealing with a company that is incapable of telling good stories and then removing what made their games great in the past. Add to that stories that seem like they were penned by overzealous activists rather than professional writers who put thought into the events in the game world.
Bethesda would need to replace their entire story group to make something meaningful again and then get back to doing what made them great, but I doubt they'll be able to do that.
They were a good studio when they limited themselves to two IPs, but since Todd absolutely had to have his space game to be happy, they had to bring Starfield and thus offended both the Elder Scrolls and Fallout fans. By the time ES 6 comes out, it will be about 18 years since the last installment and by the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will have been 20 years since Fallout 4 on that front. That's really the biggest problem Bethesda has. Their fans are getting old and Bethesda doesn't care about them and new fans aren't that easy to get anymore because the competition in the scene is fierce. The fact that it takes so long for a new game to be released naturally means that expectations are growing, because fans can see what the competition is capable of. No, you can't keep your fans waiting a good two decades for new content. That destroys everything you're trying to achieve and half-hearted rip-off attempts to get micro transactions of more focus like Fallout 76 do the rest to destroy your business.
I really wish it were different, but Bethesda is done. Mods like Fallout London or Skyblivion show where the future lies, with the fans themselves. Bethesda can still provide the engine and a new game every 10 years, but it will be the fans who will shape the future of these games.
I think especially with Starfield they went completely against their old model especially with the lifeless planets. I’m hoping ES6 is different and has a fantastic open world with numerous missions and hidden gems. Just like Skyrim.
If this fails. They will still release up to 4 games and then get shut down
Skyrim is so good I just started playing like a month ago
Oh, you're in for so much adventure! Skyrim was my first elder scrolls game, and you're gonna have a great time and feel so much nostalgia when you're finally done. 🥰😁
I hope they spend time on ES6, more then any other game they've released. I dont care if i have to wait 5 years, dont F-it up Bethesda
The best thing they can do is take their time with it!
They should fire the guy who's in charge of writing the dude is useless comme on the modding community Comes up with best quest mods with excellent writing
They’ve made fantastic games in the past so let’s hope they can all get on the same page and write another fantastic story.
@@JJGuidesUK only if they bring Michael kirkbirde
this is the video ever
FACTS
Bethesda cant afford to screw this up, theyve really fixed up fallout 76 but that took 6 years, on top of the flophouse ugly buggy shitshow that was starfield. safe to say if they drop the ball on this one theyre done for good
I think they are going to hit rock bottom if ES6 fails…
If both GTA 6 and TES6 turn out to be woke scheiss i will quit gaming forever. They are our last hope.
We have The Witcher 4 and a new Cyberpunk game coming out as well so don’t worry man. In terms of them being woke that’s a whole other discussion which differs in opinion. If they stick to the in game lore for ES6 we will be good. GTA 6 will be made to represent the modern world so we will have to wait and see.
This is an ignorant take. You must not play very many different games.
@@JJGuidesUK Bro you dont remember how cyberpunk launched do you? it took 3 years until it was playable on PC. on last gen it still isn't. As for witcher, its not about geralt, how can it be good?
bro indie games are way better or can be on pc gaming. for console users your all kinda screwed
Then do a Standalone version of Skyrim for coop and Standalone version of Skyrim for VR with all the essential mods.
We don’t need any more Skyrim content 🤣
I mean the longer skyrim exist the more the modders make things sophisticated with mods skyrim could literally run as good if not better than some games today making the expectations even more extreme than before so the more bethesda delays the worst it gets for them
I suppose you’re right but I think they should delay it until it’s absolutely 100% the game they planned to release. We don’t want another Cyberpunk situation where CD were made to rush the game
Dont do it WOKE.
You will say its woke even if its the same as Skyrim 😂😂😂
@@Seer_Of_The_Woodlands don't underestimate that ideological sect... remember what they did to dragon age and D&D, even warhammer .
