Cool I love mushroom hunting too. Some clarifications, it's actually illegal to harvest mushrooms from most city and state parks. Two closest state parks (from SF bay area) which are legal to harvest mushrooms are Soquel Demonstration Forest, Point Reyes, and Salt Point and they require permit which are free. Mushrooms from urban residential areas can also be unsafe due to pesticide and other chemicals from various sources. Mushrooms from some gymnopilus sp. are more look alike to honey mushrooms although they are not deadly like Gallerina they will get your sick. For this reason, I don't really recommend people hunting mushrooms unless they really learned how to properly identify them. Finally, it's almost time for the black trumpet and chanterelle mushrooms. They are much better mushrooms to hunt and enjoy than honey imho :-) .
Hm...? Asking for clarification, poisonous mushrooms have shiny caps and edible ones have white/brown/black powder looking fuzz? What about psychedelic mushrooms. I love mushrooms but when I see them I automatically assume they are poisonous or psychedelic and I don't bother picking.
One easy key for magic mushrooms in the SF bay area is that they turn blue when they are bruised especially on the stem/stipe. They can be found all over the bay area in (non redwood) wood chips. If you still have doubt, post your pics to the FB group called The California Mushroom Identification Forum and the experts there can help. BTW, this are just information I learned but I don't gather or consume magic mushrooms.
