    Homemade kayak loader using suction cups and PVC pipes. I created this because I can no longer load the kayak to my cartop by myself.

    I have heard of one person cracked the windshield so plllleeeaaaassseee do this at your own risk. I been using mine since I posted the video and have not had any problems. Just make sure you don't have the full weight of the yak on one resting point. At first you rest on the trunk and you holding it. Then you transfer to the resting point on the windshield and you. Then the rollers and you so at any point you only have half the weight (about 40 lbs) on the windshield.

    Very clever. Sensible people would use a helper like this to avoid a potential back injury. And for us that already have an injury which prevents lifting, thank you for your design. You should add another clip on the construction.

    I have watched over fifty videos on loading Kayak and this is by for the BEST for this type of vehicle. Great Job !!! I also LOVED the milk crate with wheels for the dolly. Thanks for sharing.

    Assembly: Starting with the "T" then 7 1/2" long (cut) PCV, slide on tennis balls, 45 elbow, 3" PVC (cut), endcap. Repeat for other side. I made mine a bit larger, so customize your 7 1/2" peice to fit your kayak. Otherwise, works great.

    Absolutely brilliant idea! Thanks for posting this, I've been fighting my 85 lb. 2 man kayak for years - this should make it so much easier. If I ever see you on the Brazos I owe you a beer... No, I owe you several beers.

    This is the best idea yet when on a budget. Being 5'5" woman not much strength in hands, I have a lrg SUV. It's a bit tricky in the hatch-bck door but it works well if you use two sets & kayak carrier cattie. I highly suggest universal cross bars & tubbies. Good luck & be safe.

    Love the idea. Its true that after a day of paddling, my arms are pretty tired and its tough lifting my kayak onto the car. My problem now is I bought a Smart car. Im not even sure where to begin putting my Tarpon 120 on the roof.

    This is awesome. Surprised somebody in China isn't making them and selling them over here. lol I made one except made mine quite a bit wider to handle my sailboard, still young enough to lift, but I like having my young son be able to load the stuff up without my help/

    I just built my pair of loader last night, one thing that troubled me about the construction is the contact point where the suction cup joins with the "T" PVC connector.
    It fits very loosely. The handle itself has finger grip contours along the bottom side. If you are building one of these you will notice the "Y" PVC will dip a bit due to the suction cup handle contours.
    I tried teflon tape but under my stress test, the join still came loose, because the PVC primer and glue didn't stick correctly to the teflon tape.
    I decided to go with a mixture of teflon tape to secure the inside tight fit, and duct tape along the outside to make sure the PVC doesn't come loose under pressure.
    Overall this is a wonderful idea, just minor tweaks to make it perfect.
    Thanks for sharing Quoc

    • @quocducnguyen
      @quocducnguyen  10 років тому

      What you said is true. The PVC inner diameter is a little bigger than the suction cup. What you can do as others have recommended is to build up the suction cup outer diameter with telfon tape or use JB weld.

    • @pimpownzu
      @pimpownzu 10 років тому

      Quoc Nguyen Thanks, I did try the teflon tape and pvc primer & glue method. I found that the PVC primer and glue doesn't like sticking to the teflon.
      I'll try to drummel out the inside of T pvc so the handle can go in deeper. Then teflon tape the handle for a tighter and secure fit. and maybe JB WELD/PVC Glue/Duct Tape it for the peace of mind.
      My last resort is to use a couple of self tapping screws to hold the "Y" steady.
      I really don't want to take any chance with the Y tilting and allow the kayak to slam onto my Infiniti. lol.

      thks. If you freeze frame the video at 4 seconds in, you will see a good picture of the loader. Basically it just
      1- pvc pipes,
      2- pvc t-connect,
      3- pvc -45 deg connect
      4- pvc end caps(optional)
      5-Four suctions glass carrier
      6-pvc glue
      Everything can be found at your big box home improvement store (in US: lowes HomeDepot). Item 5 can be found at northerntools :(www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_42404_42404)
      All the dimension can vary by how wide you kayak is. Good luck.

      @quocducnguyen  10 років тому

      I'm very sorry this happened to you. Please everyone, do not try this at home unless you are willing to take the risk.
      I've heard windshield are 5 times stronger than regular glass IF it's from a good brand and is currently in good shape without any dings already there.
      Also, placement of the suction cups matter. I would think the center most area of the windshield is the strongest.
