  • Meet Margot Juby. She's spent her life trying to exonerate purported medieval serial killer, Gilles de Rais. Learn all about it in this animated, quirky and award-winning short doc.
    -
There is only one thing Margot Juby cares about more than poisonous plants and doll-collecting, and that’s seeing her life’s work completed: the exoneration of the world's oldest serial killer and gothic supervillain, Gilles de Rais. Armed with fresh evidence, she won’t rest until everyone knows: de Rais was a medieval hero, and the most handsome man in the world.
A quirky, docu-fairytale brought to life through beautiful hand-illustrated animation, The Martyr paints a sinister-yet compassionate-portrait of two outcasts, and the obsession that binds them. In an era of true-crime fever and cancelled kingpins, the film leads us to wonder: what does it mean to love your hero-when he might also be a monster?

I'm so proud to have been involved with this. It's a little gem of a film. Robbie Ward's artwork is reminiscent of the miniatures in a Book of Hours.

It's crazy how quickly we take things for truth with out any real evidence

When I first heard that Gillis may have been framed, I was actually happy to hear he didn't do all those horrible thing they say he did to children. What I don't understand, are people who where disappointed about the news, that Gillis might be innocent... The historians who want to believe he's guilty, despite no bodies/bones being found at Gill's residence... i always assumed that they must have found piles of childrens bones to condemn Gillis, but to my surprise, that's not the case... They didn't even find 1 bone...not even a fragments

Excellent documentary. I have read Margot Juby's book about Gilles de Rais, and recommend it very much.

It's so true that they'd rather see a hero fall than a villian proved innocent. Still the case with many prisoners of today. This planet is f'd up.

If it's true that his daughter erected a stone monument at his place of death, that was visited by women wanting children or needing help producing more milk, this may reveal something about how the peasants thought of him.

Some people think Elizabeth Bathory was framed. Now people think Gilles de Rais was framed. I think framing takes a lot of work, more work than murder itself. People can't seem to realize the worst acts of barbarity are from themselves.

Read the evidence. All it took was a little bit of bribery & corruption, a little bit of torture.

Nobody doubts that terrible things are done. But the indications are that, in this particular case, it was a stitch-up. I've written reams about the reasons (financial, political, & personal) why the Duke of Brittany wanted GdR dead, I have broken down the evidence (hearsay or extracted by torture), so it's disappointing to see people reducing quite a detailed & nuanced argument to THIS.

Bathory WAS framed. She was the most rich feudal lord at that time in Hungary. Her land was confiscated, but not all of it, since she never admitted to being guilty. She preferred to die than have her children depossessed by the king. Her aunt was framed and murdered and her land taken too. Read about it!

Researched from Wikipedia, so if you want nearly six hours of being misinformed by garrulous gigglers, that's the way to go.
