I waited long enough that my hoarded PowerShot SD630 has come back into style and I couldn't figure out why no matter what card I tried, it always said CARD LOCKED and/or MEMORY CARD ERROR. Mines a few days ago started randomly saying "insufficient memory" when I barely had anything but 15 photos on a 4GB SD. After reformatting (which I didn't know one had to do with any camera) it's back to normal. And YOU SIR just saved me money! Thank you very much for posting this video!
YEH!! After 10 years and not being able to use the removeable sd card function of my new and never used JVC GZ-MG20U camcorder ( I was only able to record to the built in hard drive - camera could never find the SDHC card I would install ) anyway, I found some "OLD" micro sd 2 gb cards and the camera finally found that I had an sd card installed and formatted them!!!!!!!! Even though the manual said to use SDHC & 4-128gb and 10 class!!!!!! For some reason the "OLD card was found. Now I'm on my way to search for "OLD sd or microsd cards that's aren't HC and a 10 class!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and you are truly a life (camera) saver!!!

Wow!!! You are the camera guru in my book. I have an older Cannon Power Shot SX 40HS. I have had it about 6 years. One day it displayed the msg "memory card error" I was stumped..Long story short went to Best Buy purchased a memory card thinking this one was pretty old 8GB speed 8 and now seeing they are up to 16 GB. I thought okay this must be the problem. To my dismay it did not work. Even Nintendo couldn't help me!!! Everyone kept telling me about the lock switch....I KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS CRAP THAN THE PEOPLE WHO KEPT SUGGESTING IT!! I knew it was not my sd card! No matter what I told them, the sd card was the problem in their opinion! After watching your video....I was looking inside the slot and realized it was no longer triggering the switch. It took me a while, but with a combination of tinkering with it, with the toothpick and some tape on the card itself, IT FINALLY WORKED!!!!!! All of the products I had purchased and downloaded are saved thanks to you!!! Thank you sooooooo much! Looks like I will be redirecting others with the same problem this way. :) Peace & Love

I just wanted to let you know this video was very well done. Easy to understand. I only needed to watch up to #2 to figure out the error. I am using a newer SDHC card and I had to borrow my friend's Cybershot SD600 and the memory card is just incompatible. My trip to California and Disneyland will be forever captured. You make a lot of people happy, do you know that!? :) My card suddenly just said there was an error in a black screen! Just geting back from a vacation takin a lot of pictures and videos... I got really down. I also thought about that I am going abroad again in a week - god forbid it happens again when I'm travelling, what disasters that would be for me!? :( Instead of waiting for someone to help I searched the net and there you where :) Many different ways to try to recover made me feel better. In my case (we tried the slot / reader in the laptop, it did nothing for us) it actually worked to just connect the camera to my laptop. In the explorer on my computer, there they where and I could safely put them on my harddrive :D Now I'll follow your advice, to formate every now and then when erasing. Thanks a lot

Thank you! My plastic notch that unlock the sd card fell off, but now it work again! I couldn't find cellophane though, and electric tape was too thick. I used a little post-it that I teared and a spot of crazy glue on the post-it glue did the charm!

Thanks so much for the information, it took until the section on using a non metalic item (toothpick) to slide along the card slot in the camera (cannon Sure Shot SX 120). After doing this the cards worked again and photos were recoverable. Great instruction you tube.

So funny, I fixed my problem in seconds. I thought "Well my card is in the unlocked position", but moved it back and forth manually like you said, and voila! It worked! Thank-you. I kept getting memory card error when I put it in my printer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I had never formatted a card. I just did it. Hope it works! I was going to buy a new card.
If you open the card slot and hold the camera such that the opening is pointed down, would it be safe to use contact cleaner with the long plastic tube and squirt some up there where the switch is? Hopefully the excess would run out. Tanks for your video.

The humble tape worked for my Sony Nex-3 camera that didn`t recognise any SD card. Much obliged!

Thank-you. I kept getting memory card error when I put it in my printer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I had never formatted a card. I just did it. Hope it works! I was going to buy a new card.
If you open the card slot and hold the camera such that the opening is pointed down, would it be safe to use contact cleaner with the long plastic tube and squirt some up there where the switch is? Hopefully the excess would run out. Tanks for your video.
This helped me alot thank you I had an older camera and I bought a 64 gb card with adapter and it just kept saying card error so now I know why.

Host devices that accept SDHC cards are required to accept SDSC cards. However, host devices designed for SDSC do not recognize SDHC or SDXC memory cards, although some devices can do so through a firmware upgrade. Older operating systems require patches to support SDHC. For instance, Microsoft Windows XP before SP3 requires a patch to support access to SDHC cards. Windows Vista SP1 also requires a later service pack.
