    After doing a fair amount of research, I ordered quite a bit of the ready hour from my patriot supply, as well as a sample from legacy foods, a sample from valley food storage, and I have a couple buckets of the wise food storage from about 7 years ago. I agree with you, the ready hour is pretty good for what it is. They offer a good value for the serving size. I still stock more than the recommended serving size because it’s a little unrealistic, but they all seem to be that way. Good review sir, and young lady.

    Wasn’t sure to get ‘My Patriot’ or ‘4Patriot’. Then I saw something called ‘Patriotic Patriots Patriot for Patriots (now with even MORE Patriot!)’. I knew THIS one had to be the best, because there was just SO much more ‘Patriot’.
    Turns out it was overwhelmingly patriotic, with just the right amount of Patriot to keep it patriotic when you just need that extra Patriot to get you through the day. The only thing that could have made it BETTER is if they had added some ‘tactical’. Hopefully next time.

    Rather than buying super expensive prepper food packs, I picked up a 2nd -hand vacuum food sealer ($10) to package off-the-shelf items from the grocery store in air-tight envelopes. So far, these have remained 100% sealed, safe and tasty up to 6.5 years (so far and counting). While most commercial prepper food packs claim to last for 20 - 25 years, I can't see a realistic need to keeping the same food on the shelf for a quarter century. The food is better tasting with a wider meal selection variety. I'd rather cycle the food out at least every 5 - 7 years.

    Thanks Adventure Girl! Oh and tell your dad to let you choose when it is important!
    Rules of thumb on freeze dried foods. Mountain House and a few other major backpacker brands are so very accurate in the water requirements. With other brands following the directions often leads to soupy sloppy goop. So watered down it is almost unpalatable. But try a couple or more of the different meal items and adjust water amounts. They need tweaking to get amounts of water right. Why I don't know. That isn't ok with me but if you have a budget the lower cost options can be made better. You know those little packets of cheese and pepper flakes at the pizza place as well as other flavor packets you can find. They can be added to up the flavor of the less palatable brands. Adding canned ham or other meats helps them too. Fry the ham or Vienna sausages etc. for more flavor.

    Watching you and Adventure Girl inspired me to try one of my emergency pack foods. I made the 4Patriots Grammy's sweet oatmeal. I don't care for oatmeal either but my hubby does. The pack serves 8 and I made it as instructed. It was watery when I followed the directions so I let it stand for about 10 minutes and then put it back on the stove until it bubbled again. All these processed, dried, food storage meals can be improved nutritionally and become tastier with the addition of vegetables and some kind of meat. That is why I also store #10 cans of freeze-dried or dehydrated green beans, English peas, diced carrots, broccoli, spinach, celery, onions, tomato dices and butternut squash as well as #10 cans or Mylar pouches of freeze-dried ground beef, roast beef, ham, roast pork, sausage, chicken and turkey.
    One thing I dislike about a lot of these processed and packaged food storage meals that come in food buckets or boxes compared to Mountain House meal pouches is how long they need to cook and how much propane or butane fuel you have to use on your camp stove. With Mountain House pouch meals you just have to bring water to boil and then stir it into the pouch of dried food and wait a few minutes. And you can eat directly from the pouch instead of having to wash a cooking pot and a dinner plate with some of your stored water that you had to heat on the camp stove. With Mountain House you just have to wash a spork or spoon and clean-up is done.
    For my money, if I am actually going to have to cook the food and then wash the cook pot and dinner plate, I'll just save some money and pack in Mylar with oxygen absorbers some inexpensive dry food from the supermarket. So many of the calories in these food storage buckets come from oatmeal, dried pasta, white rice and instant potato flakes -- all foods I can buy much cheaper at the supermarket. I can make my own dried sauces for these basic starchy high calorie foods (powdered milk, sugar or honey powder and ground cinnamon for the oatmeal; cheese sauce powder, flavored salt, tomato powder, butter powder, garlic powder, chili powder etc. for the savory dishes).

      @gonefishing3644 3 роки тому +1

      @@dellaangel You can find #10 cans of freeze-dried tomato powder, cheese powder, butter powder and different types of freeze-dried shredded cheese from vendors on Amazon. Some of the listed #10 cans of storage food have shown recent slight price drops. A few others such as pancake mix, shredded potatoes and the bread and roll mix are sometimes offered for sale at close to pre-pandemic prices. Even before all the pandemic price jumps, the freeze-dried beef, chicken, cheese and scrambled egg mix were expensive. But then you are paying for a 20 year shelf life for many of these products.

      @@TheFamilyAdventurer I should have been clearer: In terms of cost, cost per calorie is much more meaningful than cost per ounce. When looking at so called "72 hour kits": 4paitriots kit is 2.23lbs ($12.11/lbs) and lists as having 3,760 calories and is .70 cents/ 100 calories; The Ready kit is 2.6lbs ($9.60/lbs) has 6160calories making it 44 cents/ 100 calories. Compared Mountain House with
    4 Patriots Mac & cheese.
    Patriot was for ,4 people. You must boil 8 cups water, stir in, stir and stir for 20 minutes. Then you need bowls to serve in. Truthfully I don't believe the macaroni was pre cooked before freeze dried. The macaroni is the same size was what I have in my shelf. That's why it took 20 minutes to cook. Not tasty, but filling..would only eat in dire need.
    The Mountain House is two serving
    Boil extra water, I needed extra water. It smells good, looks good. No question is was precooked then freeze dried. You add boiling water to the pouch, stir and seal with zip lock. The bottom has a fold that holds bag up, no spilling. Added more boiling water. It was creamy, moist, flavorful. Plus it only took 5 minutes. Nothing needed to add for flavor. If feeding adults, may need a van of corn to fill up on. It was hands down the better choice. I did not compare price because it was about taste, plus you only need a spoon. No clean up!!!

    My Patriot Supply: 2,000+ calories/day
    4Patriots: 1,253 calories/day
    So, there is a dramatic difference is how well you are going to function and feel between these two packages. In fact the 4Patriots website contains warnings about this issue.
