I once had an engine failure and had to sail into a harbour and dock, on a town quay, under sail. But that was a familiar port, in the middle of summer, daylight, perfect wind AND a full crew. You do this in a foreign country, a totally unknown harbour, at night, in winter and alone - absolutely amazing. I take my peaked-sailing cap off to you sir!

Here here . 100 % agree I sailed into harbour because of engine failure doing the Scottish islands. That was slightly choppy and I was solo. The harbour master tore me a new one though .but I managed with plenty of fenders and hanging on by the seat of my pants. . I learned a very valuable lesson. Always have a back up engine for just in case . Get an outboard and keep it serviced along with your onboard engine.

In your videos you always have such a great attitude when trying to troubleshoot things and I've only seen you not smiling once in one of your last videos you are such a pleasure to watch. And I've been watching before you left Los Angeles to Hawaii on that little boat that should never have crossed any ocean whatsoever. I'm much older than you and have had for sale boats by myself and done deliveries and you're such an inspiration for me to get back out there and to just make the best of everything thank you for sharing all of your adventures good bad and whatever comes between that. I'm in homosassa Florida and I've had the desire as little kid to have the experience of a glider. I would really like to meet up with you and meet you and just have a talk if nothing else. I enjoy all your videos look forward to them all

When I've had what I think is a tough day, I watch your video and all the stress melts away - you are an inspiration to follow what you love, and be good at it! Those waves going into the harbour looked pretty rough but you just deal with it. And the walk around the mooring near Bergen was just stunning! Lucky people to live in such a pure environment.

Just as the main swung around in that last gybe, I was thinking, geez, that's not like Sam - wouldn't he normally prepare well ahead of time like Christian Williams with a preventer line?? And within a millisecond or two, Sam's apologizing for not tying it off with a preventer... Glad to see you caught up with Erik, anyway - Williams, Holmes, and Aanderaa - my top three sailing channels now that SV Bora Bora is no longer.

Good morning from Nz. Just love your channel mate. Having seen 75 summers, I've become an armchair sailor. So subbed to you and about another 7 or 8 sailing channels. Ha I've lost count. Btw, having Scottish blood flowing through my veins, it's an insult to use vegetarian and haggis coupled together. No such thing. Call it hash. Call it mash...crap, but never haggis. True haggis ingredients consist of lungs, and heart of lamb, beef or lamb suet, fat, followed with onions, oatmeal and seasoned with, salt, black pepper and cayenne and other spices. And that my friend is authentic/traditional haggis. I've no idea what you've just eaten. Definitely not haggis. Oh yes you can buy, vegetarian or vegan haggis, but no true Scotsman will eat it, or stoop so low as to call it haggis. Have a great Christmas and a happy NY2022. Take care.

I remember 20 years ago in the middle of January, wife and I and two small kids with snow saucers over their back packs looking like ninja turtles walking before us.. flew to Oslo and wonderful train to Opdayll for skiing to find half an inch of the white stuff.. bummed but we enjoyed the town and awesome mountains. We took a train west over some blizzard snowy scenes and 10' of snow and they are smart to have many tunnels or awning like breaks to help keep snow so deep from delaying or stopping the trains alltogether. Came down a fjord and finally to Bergen where it rained most the time but what a nice colorful and busy city. Being an artist we went to the Edvard Munch (The Scream artist) I was glad to see some landscapes and still lifes too. Interesting as along the cascades of the western US...the very rainy Seattle gets soaked but it is dessert almost on the eastern side of the range all the way to Mexico it seems ...Opdayl one of the skiing capitals of Norweign Skiing was dry and mountain ridge between Opdayl eastward was in blizzard snow dropping mode and then Bergen like an almost tropical port city.in January no less. If you get to Oslo see the sailing museums they have.

I had the throttle connection come apart on my yacht . I lost all power in a busy narrow river , with my sails stowed as i was preparing to anchor . I quickly lost all forward motion due to the current , but fortunately , i was not alone . My dad used to crew with me , and he was a motorboater . I dived below and engine covers flew . Grabbed the throttle arm , i give it a good arm full to restore way . It took a little time to jury rig a piece of string as a throttle , while holding power to keep way on . I managed to get it working , so we could manoeuver enough to get the hook down , and make proper repairs . Your not alone !

I have gone off some side tracks inspired by your videos. I got into reading more about small boats inspired by Sven Yrvind and then got on some History Channel thing about Sir Ernest Shackelton and Frank Wesley's disastrous attempt in 1914 to cross Antarctica and how, in the end, they were able to make it out 800 miles on the arctic ocean in a 21 foot rigged life boat in weather and seas that sunk a much larger boat in the area at the time, which makes more sense to me after reading Sven's book - the larger the boat, the more force of resistance against a violent sea, the more stressful the sailing and potential for catastrophic failures. I am learning to sail on a Sovereign 18 and, for awhile, did not have a motor. Its nice when all the conditions line up; isn't it? I don't think I would want to go as small as Sven Yrvind but I like how you keep things simple, efficient, and seemingly more easily manageable than many on larger boats. I also like your sense of wonder and how you keep things optimistic. Thanks

Sam, you may not "claim" to be as brave as Erik, and I am not one to compare horses...but both you guys have gigantic, titanium BAWLZ. The first videos for each of you I watched were stories of men setting out across oceans to test their resolve and skill, and while I was worried that I was watching lunatics trying to find their end, I have come to realize that you guys are a rare breed of dauntless adventurers. Seeing you guys standing on the same dock made me wonder how it managed to stay afloat, and had me trying to remember if gravity on the planet was altered during that month (lol) Anyway, glad you are back here in sunny, hot, rainy South Florida for the winter. I won't pretend to be as interested in gliders as I am sailboats, but anything you put out I am sure will be informative, entertaining, and worth watching. Be safe, brave adventurer!!
