The expression uses the present simple. :) If we want to use the past, then yes that is fine, but the present perfect is better: "I *have heard* that Jane is pregnant." Present perfect because we are not specifying *when* in the past and it is probably not important in the present. What is important to the situation in the present is that today we know this rumour.
