In Thai it means the same. A lot of Thai words come from Sanskrit and Pali. Maharaj in Thai means "great king". In India, maharaja is the ruler of a kingdom. In Siam/Thai history, there are a few kings who are widely acclaimed as Great King and his name sake is ended with Maharaj. Some examples, King Taksin Maharaj used to be Ayutthaya official and fled to Chanthaburi to rally troops and then sailed from Chanthaburi to Chao Phraya River and drove back occupied Burmese invaders and thus liberated Siam. He considered Ayutthaya was too damaged from fire and decided to establish a new capital at Thonburi. His former palace is now Thai Navy headquarters.
