NEW VERSION here: ua-cam.com/video/t5Rg6Zf4NDc/v-deo.html (with USA ambassadors, ebony, and more!) There are innumerable ways to tune drums. Some people love Bill Bruford's dry high pitched toms, some like 70s completely dead disco toms. This is just one style I happen to be partial to. It sounds a bit low when soloed, but it actually records great, in a track. I've settled on all my toms on Remo Vintage Ambassadors. They seem to record extremely well and be perfectly placed in most mixes with little to no eq. Choice 2 would be clear emperors. I also apologize for not having had a proper Remo clear ambassador when i did this, but only the made in china, remo designed ambassador that came with the Yamaha. Next time i'll do better! In the meantime please do subscribe and like and check out my other videos! You might like something! Thaaaaaaaaaaanks, G :)
Ciao Giulio, thank you for taking the time to put all this together. It sounds great!! What pitch (in Hz) did you tone your batter and resonant heads to respectively?
I did this first with my eyes shut, then with my eyes opened. And came up with the same verdict. I'm partial to Remo, but Aquarian clear to my ear took top honors. Then Remo coated ambassador. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Speaking for myself, as 27 year veteran of live and studio work it was an eye and ear opening test. For future recording and live/studio performances just might make a big difference. 🥁🤘
I just did the same thing (eyes closed, then open) and was pleasantly surprised that my favorites were Remo Emperor (both finishes) and Remo Vintage Emperor Clear - the heads I used to buy primarily because of the package description. Now I know for sure that they still are the right choice for me - as if I hadn't heard them on my own kit, but it feels good to be reassured by a third party. :)
Every head in this video has a 'papery' sound except the Aquarian Classic Clears IMO. I have used Remo for a while now, I still like the sound of Clear Ambassadors, but I'm going to outfit my kit with Aquarian Classic Clears this time around.
I preferred the sound of the Remo coated heads. I'm not a drummer and I didn't realize there was such a difference in sound so this was very educational.
@@andremittwollen6245Yes, they are not bad at all, but he should have labeled them as such in the video. There is definitely a difference. The real Ambassador is warmer.
I was ready to buy Evans G2's but I may be switching to Aquarian... Thanks for doing them so close together and not talking in between. This is exactly what I needed to understand what I like
The companies that make this stuff should be doing this. These videos don't make enough money for him to buy all the cymbals you want to hear for free.
It's so crazy that there are so many different kinds of drumheads. Also amazing how the coated Remo emperor and the coated Evans G2 are so similar tot eachother! Also I got to know new types of drumheads that maybe I'll order one of those. I'm going to buy this exact drumset so thank you for the excellent review!
Love the coated and clear 2 ply and fyberskyn heads. It would've been nice to see hydraulics, black dots, pinstrips, and maybe powerstrokes thrown into the mix.
Every head sounds 'papery' to me except for the Aquarians. I recently bought all Aquarian heads for my kit, including the bass drum. It will be my first time using Aquarian heads on my whole drum kit. I'm very excited to finally be using Aquarian Classic Clears, because every time I hear them, I love the sound.
For my ears is otherwise, the only heads that not sound like a head has to sound are Remos. Evans and Aquarian in my ears have allways this noise plastic tone.
Coated Ambassadors, top and bottom. Two pieces of Moongel (no cheap variants) at 6 and 9 o’clock right at the edge or in about an inch for more muting to eliminate ring.
That was very good thank you. I think that second head, the UT clear, which came free with the new drum, sounded very bad. All the others are very good and in headphones the differences are very interesting. I was surprised at the very short decay on the Vintage Ambassadors.
Giulio, it would be nice if you could edit the video and do a side by side clear and coated comparison like for the Remo ambassador and emperor. You could add it on at the end.
I think all sound tests need to be “Blind” tests then have everyone choice the best sound! I think there’s a lot of bias based off of what equipment we have or are considering purchasing, whether by name and history or other opinions and viewpoints but if these tests were recorded but released both blindly and visuals (2 separate videos or half and half) I guarantee that people would be surprised by which they believed sounded best! This really is not a great way to choose because most already prejudge versus being neutral.
eh, i mean i dont have a favorite going into this. i just like what i hear those remo coated ambassador emperor sound the best to me i think. nice long, even decay. but it depends what youre looking for. the particular drum you put it on matters too
I have to say it is kind of fun y your doing this test on a 12” Yamaha tom as they are notorious for sounding dead do to the tom mount yet it seems to be okay here just an odd choice I think.
I was surprised how poor the Vintage Remo sounded. I guess I will go with the Emperors - coated give good attack but just enough warmth. Most were fine though.
Corey Stenlake man, I rock a legit 80’s imperial star. So by default I HAVE to buy pinstripes. Like, I think it’s a law even. Besides, I have tried single ply and once on and tuned it just mocks me, because it knows I lack the ability to NOT beat the holy hell out of it. My Sonor kit likes all kinds of heads, but regardless sounds like crap because, Sonor. But hey, that’s just me.
FLIP ! Haha right on! Idk for me I’ve tried Evans G2s, EC2s, and then the Remo Pinstripes and the pinstripes literally made all my drums sound like they were stuffed with pillows and muddy. Plus they sounded plasticky when the stick hit them and I broke 2 heads within a couple months lol so needless to say I’m not the biggest fan of them lol. The Evans EC2s are unreallll though
You should do reviews on drum heads without the second head. then we can hear the real skin and not the mix of two skins, the way you tune your bottom head is differnt than most of us
How is remo coated emperor in durability compared to clear pinstripe. I breath the shit out of my drums and pinstripes ar good durability wise but I want more warmth to my drums and I think the coated ambassadors or emperor would be my choice. I just dont want them to break right away. Also anyone if your looking for a drum head that is extremely durable the csx is the one for you. Make sure it's the controlled sound x coated. The regular csx coated or not coated is less thick and durable. I've been beating the living hell out of my snare for well over a year and thr head is holding up like a champ. For quite a few months o had the any minute I'll hit through it mentality until I gave that up cuz it just keeps going. I had a coated p3 on my snare for maybe 3 to 6 months and it broke right away. The power I hit the snare with and how high I tune em makes the head wear and break real quick usually. Basically the best head I've used and I'd recommended infinite out of 10
Wow my favorite is the clear ambassador and it is a UT ambassador non the less. Then I like the clear emperor then the same but the coated version of both. Remo for me just sound more natural full and warm with the most attack as well. Evans sound like the head verse the drum shell to me and Aquarian are to dead for my taste.
Steeno I don’t blame you. DW’s are great and Zildjian’s live videos are awesome...but MeinL You Tube page and Sonor drums are better🤣much love tho 💪🏿❤️

Yeah i realized that later and now that setup is gone. But i should do a comparison actually of US and China ambassadors, see how different they sound in the end, all things being equal. Maybe I'll do a 16 inch one, so I can bring in all the other heads and not repeat the same video.
Ive been playing my pearl soundcheck for three years now and i just went to the drum shop to fix my snare drumhead only to find out ive been playing with “fake” drumheads. Well i guess thats why my drums always sorta sounded flat🤔
Yah I think I got a fake p3 for my snare once. Unless that drumhead is naturally very thick and has a ton of coating I think it was a dud. So dead and just weird seemed off to me. It broke partially maybe cuz it was a dud or maybe cuz I smack the fuck out if my snare. Either way I used a csx before that and took it off to replace it with the p3 then the p3 broke so I'm back to the csx I've beat the living hell out of it for about a year and a halfe now it's still going strong and I havent let up.
Yeah well, I don't hear much of a difference between Evans and Remo given the same construction. I will say however that Aquarian heads always sound dull to my ear. True. Never the less, the UT section shows that you can even get a good sound out of cheaper heads. :D
