I have totally avoided this process because I thought it was going to be so terribly difficult after watching your video I realize it's not and I don't understand why all spines are not hidden spines. This is devine thank you! 🍂💛🍁🧡🍂
I totally like the hidden spine idea. I have a group of journals almost ready for the signatures to be sewed in. I will use this tequinche on two of them as I've already decorated their spines and don't want the sewing to show
Gayle, very helpful tutorial. Thank you! I’m putting together a journal for my daughter’s graduation weekend from the University of Mississippi. After watching your tutorial, I felt much more confident to tackle the “Hidden Spine”. Again, thank you!
I really have wanted to learn how to do that and you made it look "do-able" for someone like me who is still learning. Your so sweet and personable all the time. You found your true calling in making UA-cam tutorials. Not sure what you did before you retired but I bet you were great to work with 🤗 tfs and I appreciate you taking the time to share your talent
Thanks, Nan! I worked at a college for 25 years as the director of annual giving before retiring a couple years ago. I worked a lot with students and I just love college age kids! One foot in adulthood, but still very much kids. Thanks for your always very kind comments. I appreciate you so much! You regularly make my days! Hugs! ❤️
What a beautiful book cover Gayle!!! You find the most beautiful books!! Little Lord Fauntleroy was one of my favorite movies as a child. I cant wait to see the inside of this book. Thanks for the tutorial on a hidden spine. You make it look so easy, that I think I will give it a try. I am working on a Garden Journal for the lady who lives across the street from me. She has the most beautiful flower gardens.
Thanks for the tutorial! I so appreciate that you filmed in real time so we could see all the steps, some of it was out of the camera frame, but I think I got the jist of it. I'm a total newbie to this type of binding, but love the end result. New subbie, can't wait to watch more of your tutorials!
L. N. Thanks so much! Welcome to my channel! I do have a series from start to finish on making a journals using a vintage book. It might be helpful to you as a new journal maker. Thanks so much for Watching! I'm glad you're here!! ❤️
This turned out to be a beautiful spine...thought it was going to be too complicated for me, but it will be worth a try. Thank you for this tutorial, Gayle.
Thank you.. Gayle!!!! I'm one of the ones, who asked for a hidden spine!! Just finished my 3rd journal....so I need all the help I can get!!! Can't wait to try it out. SNOW!!??? I picked a bouquet of tulips today. Wish spring for you soon!!!
Thank you SO MUCH, Gayle! I've had a journal started since last fall, that I needed to know how to make this "hidden Spine"! I didn't have any idea what it was called so I could find a tutorial on it. Now after watching your video, I'll get on the ball and finish my journal! Thank you, thank you , thank you!!! diane
ALWAYS helpful! Thank you for taking the time to 'turn on your camera'! I look forward to all your videos! Enjoy the last of the snow...I know I can't wait for the green to start peeking through!
I know this is old. But I watched 3 other videos and they confused the heck out of me. They had more measurements than an architects drawings for a high rise. I watched you Gayle and after you got the thread sorted it was easy to see I can do this. One lady said I needed linen book cloth to make a strong spine. Ummm I knew someone here would use a piece of chipboard which I have so I'm going with your video. Thanks so much for this. It's a tremendous help. Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much for sharing your hidden spine techniques. Its perfect! I love watching your vids. Lots of fun watching you create pretty little things.
Your instructions are fantastic Gayle. Just sewed my first spine, twice lol... sewed second signature in upside down. Was sure I had it right. Lesson learned! 🙃
HI Gayle! I wanted to let you know that I used this tutorial to make my very first junk journal. It was so helpful - thank you! It was also so lovely to have your voice there, in the studio with me. Your videos have been keeping me company as I work on various projects for months now. It's so exciting to finally be able to *share* a project. :D Many thanks and hugs to you!
This was great. Thanks so much. I see where I made my mistakes but they weren’t visible when all finished. Now I know how to properly do it for the next book.
So that’s how it’s done! I really enjoy watching you at work and love how you share your ideas. You’re so talented and I love hearing you laugh! It’s so contagious, lol!
I've been tying and fighting the threads of my journals for three years. Hallelujah, I saw a previous video this year where you tuck the end thread under to the other side and voila, no more fighting to get a tight knot in. Thank you!
Thank you Gayle. I had done this with your instructions for my first hidden spine. And then quite a while later I went to do another hidden spine and followed somebody else's directions and it didn't work so hot. So I looked you back up because I really do like hittin spines I think the pages lay much flattered for me
Gayle, thank you so much for this very detailed tutorial. I appreciate your sharing this procedure. I am excited to start my first journal.....so I am watching as many tutorials as possible. Have a great day! Rita.
Hi Gayle! I am a new subscriber and i am learning so much. Your work is beautiful. I think this hidden spine system is very doable for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, it is very helpful to newbies to this craft like me. Have a great day!
I love this....and you did such a good job of explaining. Thank you so much. I am definitely going to try this as I think I will like it better than sewing through the spine.
Hi Gayle🖐🏻👋🏻It’s always so much fun to watch a tutorial of yours!! You always teach me so much!!! It’s so informational and love the tips you give us!!!TFS💕😊🐚gracie
Thank you for this tutorial Gayle, have been wondering how to do it, though I won't be do any hidden spines soon as I'm only on my 3rd journal. I have only just worked out how to colour my pages pink, we don't have cool aid in NZ so used vita-fresh which is probably similar. Love the book cover.
Thank you for this tutorial, I've been wanting to try to make a journal with a spine like this!! Also can't wait to see the "hitch post" closure tutorial, I believe I had commented about that as well!! See you in your next video!! 💕💕💕😗😗😗
I just saw your comment Brandy. Curious how your hidden spine turned out? I am doing just as you were a couple months ago and I am trying something new and was gonna take a chance of trying to sew a hidden spine and came on here to see what I could find and found sweet Gayle's video!! And your comment at the top! LOL So I thought I would ask how it turned out? Happy Friday!!! ~Michelle from Dallas Texas
I honestly prefer hidden spines now- the strings don't show through- a little more forgiving if you are not exactly straight- although it is a junk journal and straight should not be your top priority anyway. LOL I find them super fun and easy to do- just follow Gayle's tutorial and you will do just wonderful!!
Jessica Rapp - twosilveroranges- does a sewn hidden spine for a few of her journals- waiting for a tutorial on how to make that one- it is a soft spine rather than using the chipboard as a hard spine- I don't know how to do them, yet- but I am sure I will enjoy them as well. @@UandMeGod
Love your videos, I have my book ready as far as gutted. I have my signatures almost completed. My question is what exactly kind of binding thread do you use? Is it ou can use most any kind? What thickness is it. I mean I just don't know exactly what I should use. So please and thank you.
Hi Gayle, Wonderful tutorial and I really appreciate it! I’m so new to this but I do Love it. I have a question and that is, where do you get book binding thread? What is the thickness of the thread? I appreciate your help and talent very much. TFS and Take Care Sweetie... Big Hugs, Sue Ann 👍🏻😊💜💗💙💚💝
Hi Sue Ann! I got the book binding thread on Amazon. It came with my awl. But I bet if you search book binding twine or thread it will come up. Hope that helps! ❤️
Holy Moly Gayle, you have been busy, busy crafting your beautiful books. This was a great tutorial. FYI, we are expecting light snow here in KY too and turning really cold again. I was having Margaritas with my BFF on her deck Tuesday. Then that night with the warm and cold air crashing into one another, we had tornado warnings everywhere. Weather went from 80 degrees to 36 overnight. Spring is being extremely elusive this year. Hope all is well with you.
I live in Northwestern Pennsylvania... and one minute I'm on the deck talking to my grandson, and the next, I'm breaking out the long johns I just packed away....good grief
Great tutorial! Thank you. I already got couple of old books to turn them into journals but I I am not sure how much signatures and papers I can put in? Those journals are going to be only to make note so they won’t expand
ola wysocka a rule of thumb i use is that i put in one signature per inch of the spine. Of course, I usually embellish with pockets, tucks etc. fairly heavily, so that would affect it too. I hope that helps you a little! ❤️
Gayle.....SOS.....what can I do if the threads are too loose in one signature yet it's all glued down?.....☹🤔😩....so upset as it's for a terminally ill friend and it's gone wrong, wondering if I can somehow tighten it to stop the pages wiggling....the other 2 signatures are fine just the front one...urrgghh! Any suggestions from previous experience would be appreciated???
Yikes sounds cold ... I’ve done this hidden spine a few times too ... you might want to check out Kraft-Tex ...amazon.com ... that’s what use and it works great!!! Thank you sharing you day with us! ♥️🐞
DD Ladybug thanks! I do have Krafttex, but this spine was super flimsy and I wanted to give it some stability. I use the Krafttex when the spine is thicker and more stable..great minds, my dear! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️

This is the best explanation of a hidden spine I've seen! I have made one but now I'm ready to make one with an altered book! Thank you!

So helpful I'm going to try this on the current journal I'm working on. Thanks

Is it too much to use a piece of cardboard from cereal box to sew the actual signatures into and then glue that into the back of the spine?
Awesome! Thank you. I was trying to count how many pages you put in a signature. About how many works best for you?
Around 15 per signature because I fatten them up with pockets, tucks and such. ❤️
Where do you get your clipboards at that you're putting into the spine of the book?
Thank you for sharing! How many pages are in each of your signatures?
Michelle Garcia about 15 pages, if I remember right, ❤️
I love your tutorial, how many pages are in the signatures???
I usually put about 15 pages in a signature. Sometimes a few less if I’m going to heavily embellish. ❤️
@@gayleagostinelli_ct Thank you Gayle
Awesome tutorial. Dear sister can you tell that how many pages are there in your one signature?
Anjum bukhari I usually do about 15 pages in a signature. ❤️
