    Literally woke up and watched your video from an alarm. That's how you know it's love. 😂❤
    I think this is super awesome and informative. Something that's come up in conversation with artists is that some of it is also dependent on the relationship with the client, and the "purpose", so to speak, of the tattoo, like if the artist is doing the tattoo as a showpiece or to build a specific type of portfolio.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому +13

      that's a tough one. i think technical ability > artistic ability though, when it comes to tattooing. the reason why is because a person has to wear it. no one is going to care how good the color choices are if the tattoo is scratchy, wiggly, and heals like crap. i'd rather have a simple or bland, well done tattoo than an ugly mark on my body that was ruined by someone who knows art but can't make it happen in the skin

    One thing you didn't cover is who the artist wants to be tattooing.
    I have a friend who keeps his rates on the lower side because of who he enjoys tattooing. So maybe his wallet takes a bit of a hit but he has a better time doing the work and knows his clients appreciate it which keeps his passion alive.
    Where if he charged more then only well off clients would be able to afford to get a tattoo by him.

    I'm so glad I found your channel! I'll be getting my first tattoo soon (probably the start of a sleeve) and every single video you've put out has been super informative and definitely helped me understand more about tattoos. I have two quick questions. 1: Would it be a bad idea to get tattooed by a friend? (she's been a professional for about 5 years now and her work is pretty good compared to the artists in my area). 2. Is there such a thing as too many designs on a sleeve? I'm doing a sleeve dedicated to this one music group that has helped me out a lot in life. I've picked something from each album so it's about 10-14 designs and my arms are a bit on the small side. Thanks for the videos!

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому +5

      thanks for watching. the answer to your questions are difficult. if you like your friend's artwork, and you're both easygoing people when it comes to business, then you're probably in good shape. just don't ask or expect a discount unless they bring it up first. be willing to comply with all of their policies, like deposits and all that shit, and also try to give them a good amount of slack to run with the design.
      as for the second question, yeah, i think that will probably be too much for one sleeve. having a million things on one arm can make things stiff and reduce legibility because of all the small, bunched up shapes. so less is more when it comes to subject matter. of course, there are many ways to skin a cat and it highly depends on the sort of imagery you're talking about, how big of a person you are, and a lot of other factors. when in doubt, though, keep it simple

    • @승훈진-c5i
      @승훈진-c5i 5 років тому +3

      @@JamesWithee Hey James thanks for replying! I do indeed like my friends artwork and definitely feel like her style fits in with my theme. I would never ask her for a discount or accept one from her. I believe she should get paid in full for her hardwork. Aside from that we're both easy going and I feel like the experience would be a lot better and I'd be more comfortable if that makes sense.
      Yeah I had a funny feeling it would be too much so I've kinda been brainstorming ideas. Mostly only getting designs from my favourite albums or combining some together.

    I totally agree with all of this. But you asked for feedback in case you missed something. I feel like the location of where the artist has to tattoo anatomically is also another small factor to it. For instance, arms and backs are pretty simple to work on, but necks, hands, or faces are not so easy to work on

      This is definitely something I plan on touching on cuz it comes up all the time with clients. It was actually part of one of my unreleased vids that I gotta remake at some point. The short of it is that I like to shave the client myself. That way I have a better idea of how much chafing / razorburn the skin has undergone just in case I get a rough heal and have to troubleshoot it. I want control over everything that happens to the skin prior to tattooing

    Great vid. I know I'm late, but would you consider level of difficulty (i.e. room for error) another factor in price? I know there's no such thing as an easy tattoo, and that difficulty of a tattoo style varies per artist, but in the case of something like portraiture, which takes precise accuracy and has no room for error because otherwise the whole thing is ruined, should something like that cost more than another style that doesn't theoretically require as much precision? I know you mentioned style as a factor, but I felt that was more based on trend vs actual difficulty. Thanks

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah ppl tend to charge more for tattoos that are physically uncomfortable for us to do. Like tattooing inside the lip for behind the ear. Or just shit that’s unenjoyable. Like cover ups. Portraits I don’t think so, because portrait tattoos are easy for ppl that are used to them

    Hey James, just want to say I love the video series! I'm 33, preparing to get my second tattoo (but first big tattoo -- 3/4 sleeve). I watched your episode on teenagers waiting to get a tattoo due to body changes that have yet to come.... could you do an episode on when it is best to get a tattoo in terms of weight loss and muscle gain? I'm a bit heavier than i use to be and Im in the process of losing weight and trying to get back to my college size (quite a few pounds in difference unfortunately - thank god I don't want a tattoo on my stomach or chest !! haha). But just trying to figure out should I wait until im done with the weight loss and muscle build, should I do it now, or pick a middle time frame? Tough question to have a sure-fire answer, but discussion would be great!!!

    I’m getting two Polynesian style armbands on my bicep tomorrow it should be easily coverable and I’m 18 but I’m really nervous I’m gonna regret but it signifies where I grew up (Hawaii). It looks really good tho it’s tiny too it’s two one inch armbands with an inch spacing with negative spacings so it doesn’t look like it has a border. I’m not really worried about the tattoo messing up when my arm grows because it goes all the way around I’ll probably gain maybe 40-60 more lbs. I’m 125 right now. Im excited but nervous 😬

    Yo James made us wait forever for that trademark f bomb. Also while I will say that the payoff is sometimes higher for a tattoo artist to work in densely populated areas, the cost of living and overhead costs are also higher. As a client you can't just assume that they're actually making bank because of where they are.
    Edit: thanks for addressing the question I had about the artists charging the same amounts in shops.

    Hey James- thx for the informative vids. I didn’t start getting any ink until I was 50. I now have wrist, foot and back pieces. About what age does it make it too difficult for the artist to work well with the skin canvas?

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  5 років тому

      Great question. I'd say the skin starts becoming more difficult to work on once a person reaches 40 years old and progressively gets worse from there. It is a case by case thing tho and totally depends on the individual. The main issue with older skin is that it can't take as much punishment from the needle as younger skin so it gets overworked easily so some styles become hard to execute

      Hello. KP usually isn’t a problem with tattoos as long as you don’t have a current flare up. Essentially as long as the area isn’t really red, itchy or painful, you should have no problem with tattoos. I’m a tattooer with KP and have never had a problem with my tattoos or my client’s with KP. Some causes of a KP flare up would be exposer to saltwater, getting a lot of sun and low humidity in the environment. It’s best to wait out a few weeks until the KP discomfort subsides. I hope this helps and that you’ve been able to get tattooed!
