I lived in Birmingham for a number of years. It wasn't great when I moved there but it has improved. The title of the ugliest city in the UK is a little harsh I feel. I can think of five uglier cities in the U.K that didn't even make this list. Bradford, Sunderland, Wolverhampton, Portsmouth, Glasgow among others.

Absolutely no chance Bradford should rank in this and quite rightly it didn't. Architecturally it has some beautiful parts to the city with some excellent public spaces. Thanks to its rich past - having once been the woolen capital of the world - the wealthy merchants have left their mark and a positive one it is too.
It has its fair share of brutalist architecture granted, but it's not destroyed by it.

Nah Glasgow is not ugly. The unique architecture, dense city centre, good transportation links, nightlife are also remarkable. I feel the only reason most people look down at Glasgow due to its location being in Scotland (idk why people diss Scotland so much), and the knife crime which I last heard is on par with Birmingham.
I've been to both Birmingham and Glasgow, Glasgow is definitely so much better. The only thing I think I prefer in Birmingham is the actual landmarks themselves. Such as the library, bullring, grand Central, Custard factory, University of Birmingham, the mailbox for example.

Hi everyone. Having been to Birmingham many times (first in the mid 70s) I do not really agree with the top score of good old Brum being the ugliest city in the UK. Of course every place in the world has it's nice and ugly parts. As for Birmingham I think that it has improved very much over the last decades. It has a throbbing centre that has been refurbished quite a bit. The Bull Ring Centre has been transformed from a monstrocsity made of concrete to a modern and nice shopping centre. Lots of nice bars and discos make B'ham a great nightout place to be. People are generally friendly (I never met any unfriendly person there). The airport is really convenient in size and location (one really doesn't want to go through Heathrow...). Thumbs up for Brum!!! Greetings from Vienna, Austria.

Obviously someone who didn't watch any of the CWG, I think you should actually visit Birmingham. The majority of the photos you used are years old and show buildings that were demolished a long time ago. The narrative mentions the ugly Bullring shopping centre, this was knocked down nearly 20 years ago and has been replaced with a new shiny glass version that includes the iconic Selfridges building. Its the same with the Central library which you actually show in the video half demolished. It was replaced ten years ago with the new library also being an iconic piece of architecture.

They replace ugly dystopian buildings with futuristic dystopian buildings. I don't see any improvement. They should replace them with traditional buildings made of local materials buildings tat make a pleasant environment.
Soon the beautiful Britain that you see in paintings, films or stories will be gone and we will be left with soulless glass and steel buildings just like architects are sadly building all over the world.

I live in Swansea, and I struggle to see how this is the 4th ugliest city. You say no lighthouse, then you obviously haven't visited Swansea. And, people from other parts of the country have said it is the second best place to go pubbing, before it was clubbing. How many cities have you actually visited? There is a £135 million development still going botched up by the City and County Labour administration. Some parts, a 5 year old could have done better.

I stayed at a small hotel in Hull for 2 weeks in the late 1970's. I had my evening meal there each day, all of the components coming out of a freezer. When I queried why no fresh meat or veggies, I was told preparing frozen food was much quicker and cheaper. Mind you I found the nearby pub a most agreeable place. For a deep sea fishing port, fresh fish seemed to be unobtainable. Even the chippy served up wedged shaped fillets out of the chest freezer. From what I can gather, the fish landed at the port was sent directly to the fish processing factories to be turned into fish fingers and fish cakes.

I dare say that hotel was not the only one in the country serving pre-frozen food in the 1970`s - even in a Port City.

For me, I have to say, I don’t 100% see why Hull is so disliked. I’m not saying it’s the most amazing place on the planet and I wouldn’t even immediately go there for a city break or anything but I’ve been there a couple of times for one reason or another and I didn’t think it was that bad.

A nice summary of views, and as someone originally from Birmingham, I agree and disagree with some of them. As for Swansea, as a former lorry driver, I often went there, and actually like the city, and would happily move there if i had the chance. As for Hull, again I've been there a few times and again, I like it. Lots of history to find and look at, if you can be bothered. Finally, Birmingham. As I now live in Walsall, just north of the city (which is a s*** hole anyway), I do like the way the city is developing, and it is still a popular location for films and tv series to be filmed in. Recently (2016), the Steven Spielberg film Ready Player One, used Birmingham for most of its live, on street filming locations, and in one of them you can actually see the building of the new central library, if you know what to look for. I must admit that knowing the area well as I do, I often rerun the film to see exactly where certain scenes were filmed. So overall, being a Bummie at heart, I do not see the city as all that bad.

London does not make it on the list as it looks grotty because of its predominately Victorian infrastructure not standing well to the test of time. So many towns in the UK seem to have a complete lack of civic pride. Look at the litter to see that.
Look at important public buildings on the continent such as post offices and railway stations. They have a sense of pride to welcome visitors to the towns. In our country, such places are shabby and neglected. The railway stations (where they exist at all) are little more than bus shelters. If there is a proper building, it is a hideous exercise in concrete. The only ones who like it are the architects who think they are very clever in designing something that hideous. As for post offices, these are often part of a supermarket of zero archirectural merit, or share premises with a chain of sandwich outlets (as the post office is in my town). The same is true of other public buildings.
What were once architecturally pleasing areas were demolished and replaced by the brutalist buildings of the nineteen fifties and sixties. Contrast this with German towns that were wrecked in the Second World War and rebuilt with copies of what was there before.
Our (plague) island is good at sheep, seabirds and seals. Domestic and commercial architecture is not so good.

Birmingham and Coventry are awful cities and I did live in these cities for a bit. I agree about Hull and Stoke on Trent but Bradford is No.1 ugliest city. My top 5 list are:
    1. Bradford
    2. Coventry
    3. Hull
    4. Stoke on Trent
    5. Leicester
    then it is Birmingham

Bradford?! All that beautiful victorian architecture and nice public realm. The gem of an area that is Little Germany? Not a chance it is one of the top 5 ugliest cities. The number of times I've taken people to Bradford and their reply is, 'oh, it's much nicer than I thought it would be!'
Public perception of a place is very misleading. Bradford gets a bad rep, but one thing it ain't is ugly!

@@brothersman524 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. If you genuinely believe Bradford city centre is the ugliest UK city then fair enough - it's your opinion - but with all that victorian splendor and award winning public realm it's hard to believe.
The rest of the UK's cities must be extremely impressive places!
