I think there needs to be a lawsuit over this issue with this phone. I have this issue with my ZFold4. My brushes started coming out of the hinge after 1.4 years of ownership and gentle use. Phone no longer opens all the way. For now i don't use it and have reverted back to an older Note series phone. I'd be interested in knowing the exact number of folks that have had this issue. I'm pretty certain many have and almost everyone will have this issue. Personally if I were you, i'd dump that phone as soon as you can, before it happens to you.
My Z fold 4 also stoppe opening fully just yesterday. Very light use and only 19 months. No longer warrantied...I am not impressed and will never get a phone with "moving" parts again...
I got my fold 4 in the Q3 of its release. 1 year was about to get completed and the exact same issue. So i traded in my fold 4 with s24u. They offered me half the price i paid for fold 4. So a huge loss but I am happy i took the right decision. S24u initially seemed like old school. But now i am not atball worried about the hinge or screen. Plus, the camera is amazing dont have to unfold the device and all in one screen. But i am disappointed from samsung to ill design a phone in its 4th generation.
Hi Shane, a bit off topic but I wanted to say that today I picked up my Surface Duo and your channel helped me a lot with making that decision. Can't wait to use it as my secondary device, you showed so many ways to use it and customise it that I'm going to go back to those videos a lot. Thanks!
My Z Fold 3 is almost 4 years old now on the shelf but I do use it sometimes and still it's just fine. I had my Pixel Fold now 10 months folds flat since I bought at launch.
As someone who spends time in the z fold sub reddit, this is definitely not the first time I've seen these brushes be the reason that someone's hinge messes up. I posted in this thread the day he posted it.
My fold 4 had the same issue of not folding flat. I sent it in for screen repair for the screen protector. Luckily they also corrected the issue with the hinge. I kept mine in a case. There is no way any debris got in. I'm certain it was the brushes.
Yes, I had an issue with the hinge on the Z Fold4 I had before I got the Z Fold5. The Z Fold4 would only be folded out like 170 degrees instead of 180 degrees after 7-8 months of use. I got it covered by the warranty (not by Samsung itself, but from those I bought it from), so not a single issue in the process of getting it fixed. I ended up by getting a totally new Z Fold4 instead of getting my current Z Fold4 device repaired. And I see more and more cases about this popping up about the Z Fold4, so i'll guess the hinge on the Z Fold4 have a flaw. Luckily the hinge on the Z Fold5 is lightyears better where I haven't experienced a single issue with it yet and have barely heard any talk about the hinge on the Z Fold5 having issues. The hinge on my Z Fold5 now is still as good and smooth as it was new back in August 2023. So i'm super happy that Samsung changed the hinge design on the Z Fold5. Not sure if the hinge design on the Z Fold6 will be any different from the Z Fold5, but I hope not, because I know the hinge on the Z Fold5 works perfectly fine, so just use what works very good.
My Fold 6 get stuck sand from my pocket . i hear the sound of sand crack inner. hear the crunchy noise when i open my fold 6 What should I do? Can i fix it for from samsung warranty??
I started with Fold 2 and finally game up on Fold 4. Back to the S-series. From my experience unless they make it dust poof it's not worth buying Folds. After 8/9 months they will stop folding flat!. I also found if you charge your Fold wirelessly it becomes so hot that it melts the glue of the brushes(dust protector) and they get into the hinge.
Surely there has to be a way where a plastic style rubber material which can stretch could be looped on the outside or inside of the case basically stopping all debris going into the case
The reddit comment of putrid-breath worked for me ! with the plastic of a soda bottle. It's not totally flat but usable. I'm so glad I found your video, thank you

Well spoken! Thanks! @ 13 months today happened, 2 months ago the crunch sound came, now i know it was the brush misaligned. I use this device 12 hours a day and probably opened it over five thousand times, so probably very reasonable wear and tear, I'm a really lucky one- I really don't mind right now. LOL I'LL PROBABLY TRY IT😂 ANYWAY. Great vid.
I just got a new Fold 4 back from a warranty repair. I couldn't open my Fold 4 flat. I read that this could be caused by glue in the hinge starting to crack over time. Anyway, after 1.5 years, I got a new phone - So for the time being I'm happy again
Thank you for reporting this! I encountered a similar problem with my z fold 4. It could only open 90 degrees one day. And nothing went in there at all! Makes sense that something INSIDE was coming off.
@@rafaelconejos6662Sorry to hear that, it happened to mine today, Tomorrow I'll go to Samsung to see what they can do, here in México phones are pricy, about a year ago I paid 3,000 for my Fold 4, so getting a new one is not a choice and idk if anyone would like to trade it 🥲
Hinge alignment issues on the Z4 started not long after the release. People were noticing gaps while others didn't. We've also known Samsung does not repair devices with scratches on the hinge since the Z3. Doesn't make it right, but it has been that way for sometime now. A scratch on the hinge should not affect the durability, but what if an impact does? A scratch could be from a bad case or debris but it could also be from an impact and not all impacts are drops. That's Samsung position, IMO. We already know they don't want to repair it for free so it's likely just an excuse but if an impact throws the device out of alignment, that could cause damage. My Z4 has been fine. I don't think this will happen on the Z5 because we have not seen any hinge issues. Even if it does, it won't be within the same two year period as the Z4. We haven't even seen SP issues on the Z5 like the Z4 or Z3.
I think the reasoning with denying the warranty due to the scratch on the hinge is probably that they think the phone might have suffered a fall where it landed on the hinge which could probably damage the hinge internally somehow from the impact.
You don't plan on repairing it?, it happened to mine today and tomorrow I'll go to Samsung México to see what they can do, here phones are super expensive, my Fold 4 was 3,000 dollars when I bought it about a yesr ago, so getting a new one is not a choice for me 😢
I purchase my z-fold 4 when it came out and literally it stopped folding flat about 2 weeks after the fold 5 was released. That's the only reason I upgraded to the 5
Perfectly... I use my watch and buds on my open. Just pray your device doesn't need warranty support I'm one of those people who had to wait a month and a half to get mine back and had to haggle back and forth with the company
My Fold 4 has just developed this fault. It's going in to Samsung to be assessed by an engineer. I'll be using what I've learned in this video to counteract any excuses they make to not fix my phone under warranty.
I have a similar issue I've used small plastic to scrape out debris and even soaked it in warm water and bunch of debris came out it doesn't open flat but a lot better than before
Samsung are a disgrace. I have been in the position where my fold 4 stopped folding nowhere near flat and when i took it to the Samsung store they gave me a nonsense story about there being a blemish on the screen so they voided my warranty even though i explained that could not have affected the hinge in any way. i dumped them for the OnePlus open and its genuinely the best move ive made since i ditched the iphone. I had the same thing. Saw what looked like adhesive on my fold 4 hinge, with what looked like threads. I pulled and actually took the whole brush out. Lucky enough it was repaired within 3 months. They didn’t fit the new screen correctly and it failed, so after a lot of back and forth I got a refund.
My galaxy fold 4 inner screen ribbon has failed and 2 different teck support people are just saying change the inner screen completely 749.00 when it's the two 20 doller ribbon cables
Well, mine stoped to open fully after an year and 4 month. But on top of that - inner screen failed, left half gone dark one day. Mind you that I used my Fold 4 fully open only time to time when i was reading or something. Fortunatly for me, even with slightly scrached corners of the back of hinge, I got fully serviced and now I have almost new phone, exsept boards and what not. But - this is expected. For me, what I would call a "fail point" is place where bouth parts of hinge slides side by side, if you got the idea. Its basicly metal rubbing against metal. And when lubricant will dry out or any dust, sand or what ever will get in - they will fail. What I would done in Samsungs place is - read thoes treads, take notes and improve design. My 2 cents on this one.
Inherently these kinds of issues will always be a part of a folding phone with a complex hinge mechanism. I really like foldables, however there are enough downsides that I just don't foresee them ever becoming mainstream devices.
When I worked in automotive I was taught that anything that's mass produced is going to have a certain percent of defects. The more moving components you have, the more room for those defects. I do think that this particular issue is one that can be solved though. It's important to keep in mind that we are only something like six years into this form factor. I think it's far too early to say "never."
Yup this real... Just sent my orginal model back to Verizon for a free replacement last month... This is Happening.. thanks God for the extended warranty from Verizon.
I am on the phone with Samsung right now and they are denying the design flaw and hesitating with forwarding to supervisor to repair for the second time less than 7 months from last repair.
I had that brush completely stick out of the hinge of my phone after a year or having the phone. It was legit hanging out like a fckn tampon string. I slowly pulled it out and my food was able to open MORE flat but still not flat ...
Had this occur as well to my Z Fold4. Just a few days after my warranty expired, I sent it in for a protector screen replacement ($40 job). When I got it back, it stopped opening flat. A gummy substance and part of a brush came out of the hinge... Called up Samsung again and they wouldn't repair it because it was now out of warranty and they had already done a warranty exception on my phone! $40 vs $800 job! Hoping I can trade this in for another foldable, but also don't know whether or not the fact it doesn't fold flat if it will lower my trade in value... Thinking of waiting for the Fold 6 (and hope they've fixed this issue) or going with a OnePlus Open. Anyone have experience?
Had the same issue with my z fold 4 returned it to my carrior they then sait after looking at it apparently it had drop damage which i don't believe them on and they wanted £600 to fix it i never thankfully i had insurance on it and got a replacement phone that happened in January to me after owning my fold 4 since launch i am now on my second z fold 4
Just happened to my Fold 4 tonight. 1.5 years old so out of warranty. Mine's on a 2 year "rent and return" style plan from Rogers and now I'm likely going to have pay some sort repair fee when I give it back in November. What a piece of junk
I have a Z Flip 4 same issue and I did clean the stuff out of mine...helped a bit for a while but then my hinge started clicking a bit and now it doesn't open even near flat...just using it like that...I wont purchase another flip phone.
I bought a used Zfold 4 it opens 95% that 5% really makes me not appreciate the phone at all. I can see the potential of this phone being absolutely goated but the engineering aspects of it make it fall short imo. It just too much of a hassle with all the problems your going to run into later.
most crappiest company when it comes to customer care and repairs.. and poor quality manfucaturer. after update my wifi works only when fold is open and turns off when phone is closed
I'm so terribly annoyed. I have kept my phone in a very secure case ever since I got it. I have never dropped it, it has no scratches whatsoever. Suddenly, overnight one day, my phone did not open fully anymore, and after each attempt I had some sticky adhesive on the outside of the hinge. It seems the brushes have started to loosen and are getting stuck in the hinge. My phone has always been carried around in a small shoulder bag, and never in my pockets. There is basically no possibility of anything from the outside being in the hinge, as I've taken extremely good care of my phone. Seeing as it just gets wrecked because of a shit design choice makes gets me fuming. I tried submerging it and working the hinge but to no avail.
1.3 years of slightly used as the my fold 4 is my secondary phone. It’s 700$ to get the hinge fix with Samsung. I’m just going to buy an iPhone at this point since my other phone is an iPhone.
Samsung is quick to deny warranties, my fold 3 got the line of death down the center. I sent it in and was rejected because of the same thing ( a scratch on the hinge)
I personally wont look at a Samsung folding device. I owned a duo loved it and miss it and got my wife the z flip and although its a nice decice when i decided to move from the duo i got a razor 2022 and ive had mine just over 6 Months now and it was not new when i got it and had no issues. My wife's flip was new and its had the screen protector repaced twice on it in the 1 and half years she has had it. For me im staying way from Samsung ubtil the change the folding technique.
It happened to me... is not that the brushes coming off....it is the glue coming off from under the strip of the brushes... then the whole strip with the brushes start moving with every opening-closing inside, and eventually they jammed under the screen and between the flat cables running across the two halves.... eventually they destroy some signals from these flat cables going to the screen, that's why you see green lines and even worst the creen completely destroyed and black out in places....I sold it now after repair so I don;t have to worry about, even that it was like new..that glue will fail eventually with the body heat if you have it on your trouser pocket for example, or in the sun, or hold it close in your hand and make the hinge worm from your body temperature in combination with app running and make it hot... I hope in the future designs they will fire the stupid enineer who come up with this design and put something else on the strip that that glue, even super glue will be much better than this substance....
This is exactly what happend to my Zfold3, brushes stuck in the hinge, impossible to open it more than 90 degrees. This is obviously a design flaw and Samsung doesn't whant to do anything about it, no waranty support or anything; I'm done with Samsung
It's not something I'm overly worried about. It's been going on since the beginning of these devices and most people are just now hearing about it because it's not common. It just takes one news story to take hold.
@@scaryifliteral thank you for the advise I will definitely try one just don’t know what kind of foldable device, I currently have an iPhone 15 pro max

i just had a nightmare experince with Samsung, my fold 4 would not open flat, and samsung refused to fix under warranty, as there was some scrathes on the phone and lens has minor crack. as such i have sold all my samsung devices and went and bought an iphone. i also encourage everyone to avoid samsung, to me warranty is important and ive never had an issue with Apple.
The true problem is that these phones are pretty rare and service centers are staffed by low wage feeble minded imbeciles. They refused to change my screen protector and wanted to swap whole screen... imagine that lol. When they see a fold of any generation they will try to wiggle themselves out of doing any work on them because they don't want to research and try new models and techniques. When I reported that my headphones have connection issues outside, they never checked them away from the desk. If your warranty is still valid, I get it but once warranty is over I go straight to private shop staffed by passionate people who will always find a way. Now coming to my fold 2 it really started to deteriorate this year. It does not open fully and the back battery got swollen (30$ job for the local nerds), the Alu bezel around the device started to get scuffed a lot despite of no changes in use. I think that these phones are calculated to last 4 years. Buying I assume the folding screen would die, but no xD its perfect.

Z fold 5 still flat as a pancake from launch 👍
I wonder if the Pixel Fold has these Brushes inside the Hinge? I am so curious after this video.
I will never buy samsung again as they denied to repair it in warranty
1.3 years of slightly used as the my fold 4 is my secondary phone. It’s 700$ to get the hinge fix with Samsung. I’m just going to buy an iPhone at this point since my other phone is an iPhone.
Samsung is quick to deny warranties, my fold 3 got the line of death down the center. I sent it in and was rejected because of the same thing ( a scratch on the hinge)
nah the guy just destroyed the brushes 🤣🤣🤣
Who gives af, if it works and closes, im happy
Worse for me. Not only it doesn't unfold properly, WiFi and Bluetooth don't work.
My z flip started to do that I traded it in before it broke lol
Does OnePlus Open use brushes?
Not 100%, but I don't think so. No dust resistance.
Samsung seems to get off with this product fault lightly. They should replace each Fold 4 ,in the world if they want to be a credible name.
What's in the new surface duo 2 up date?? Please.
If you're still under warranty Samsung will repair your phone free of charge.
Samsung will not fix the phone they transfer the internals of your phone to a blank phone that only has the internal and external screen.🤔
This is exactly what happend to my Zfold3, brushes stuck in the hinge, impossible to open it more than 90 degrees. This is obviously a design flaw and Samsung doesn't whant to do anything about it, no waranty support or anything; I'm done with Samsung
I am finding that it is heat I left mine in the car accidentally once in the sun and it got really hot for the very next day hinge failure
It melts the glue that holds the strips together... I love my fold 4 but I truly hate this 1 issue..
It doesn't matter if your z fold has scratches and hinge problems Samsung does offer hinge replacement
Except when they don't lol
Should I not buy a fold after hearing this horror story 🤔
It's not something I'm overly worried about. It's been going on since the beginning of these devices and most people are just now hearing about it because it's not common. It just takes one news story to take hold.
@@scaryifliteral thank you for the advise I will definitely try one just don’t know what kind of foldable device, I currently have an iPhone 15 pro max
Personally I treat my zfold and pixefold like delicate flowers. I don’t throw them on a dirty table. I avoid putting them in say a lint filled jacket pocket. It’s a downside to all foldables.
i just had a nightmare experince with Samsung, my fold 4 would not open flat, and samsung refused to fix under warranty, as there was some scrathes on the phone and lens has minor crack. as such i have sold all my samsung devices and went and bought an iphone. i also encourage everyone to avoid samsung, to me warranty is important and ive never had an issue with Apple.
Again !? Every FOLD from samsung is faulty !!!! I think i will never buys it... waiting sience fold 1 ... every fold model is faulty ... Shitsung is shitsung..4 real...
