I completely agree with you! This is exactly how I want to curate my collection as well. For just seeing the money you spent on the books, I’m not sure if this will help, but I would suggest viewing all the books as books you truly wanted at one point. I would appreciate why you wanted them and recognize why you no longer want the book. It’s also a matter of releasing that weight. It’s just a material item and it’s nicer to have the choice to get rid of some of your collection that you no longer want and be grateful that you have the ability to make that choice than it be taken from you via a natural disaster or moving that doesn’t allow you to take everything. You can also look into reselling any on pango or mercari. See if a nearby library or school take book donations. Any family or friends that’d be interested?

And if I rate a book high and feel like I want to reread it I put in on my wish list. If I feel like I want to annotate it I might buy it immediately. If it is the first in a series and I really love it I might put it on my wish list and wait to continue reading the series until I've bought it. I did have more books than I could fit and had them in bags 🙈 and I went through them a couple of years ago and unhauled a lot. And I regret the whole venture. There is a long series here in Scandinavia called "the tale of the ice people" if you translate it (Sagan om isfolket) that had 47 books in total. I co-owned them with someone and we sold them all. I regret it. The same author (Margit Sandemo) has written two more series that I also owned, and unhauled. Regret that too. I wish I would have found somewhere to store them instead. You live and you learn.
