Tent Cleaning 🏕️ Mold & Mildew

Check your tent for mold, mildew before heading out on camping trips. A white vinegar/water solution works great for cleaning the tent and making it smell fresh. Use household oil for a stuck zipper slider, and run a bar of soap along all zipper chains.

Thanks, I let me teenage son and his friend use my tent and as you would guess they half ass cleaned the tent. It stunk the house up. I made him clean it and he used dish soap. So now he's cleaning it again with vineger and he hates vinegar so this will be fun to watch.

I think I'll try this tip but different. I like the natural option. I can't stand harsh cleaners. I think I'll try putting it in a big tote to wash it.

My tent was in storage too and developed mildew. It has some crusty yellowish stiff that I thought was old waterproofing coating...not sure if I should scrub it off or not...
I treated my with a pet stain enzyme cleaner that was pretty effective, but the tent is still a bit sticky/tacky. I'll try the vinegar next. BTW- miraclzyme(sp?) is a product that most tent companies seem to recommend for mildew. Runs about $10 on amz.

I add colloidal silver (surgical and food grade antiseptic) to my vinegar, plus a drop or two of dish soap

No washing tent in a front loader washing machine? Gentle cycle? No? Just wondering because I scored a single person tent and it stunk pretty bad of human funk, possible mold, and for sure mildew... smells like feet, ass, sweat and old nylon tent ... white vinegar, eh? How bout thieves oil...

Would it be possible to wash tent in a bathtub then hang out to dry ?

Yes. I would put fly and tent in tub. Put some vinegar in with water. Let soak for a while, hour or two, maybe overnight, rinse and dry. I don't believe wiping the surface is good application method. I cleaned a hammock and two sleeping bags this way. Then rinsed them in a washer and dried them. Problem solved. I used woolite and cold water to wash mold and vinegar smell out of fabric.

Mine smelled the same afterward and I added a little bleach as well. Maybe I need to use a lot more vinegar. Oh well. Maybe time for a new tent.

If fabric rotting into dust, get new tent. Otherwise you can clean it.

Bleach not needed. Vinegar will kill mold.

When she spray with vinegar it will kill the smell but it will not kill the mold spores you have to wash it properly rinse out the Dead mold spore Air dry

My tent doesn’t have mild or mildew. It smells of damp. It’s out airing at the minute. Will this method get rid of the poignant smell?? The smell stays on our clothes. It utterly stinks. Please respond ASAP. As we are hoping to sleep in it tomorrow night. Thanks.

For you zipper run a bar of soap over the zipper It will keep the zipper from sticking
