HALO Forward Unto Dawn was onto something with the cadet’s perspective of the covenant and I personally think paramount really screwed up with their excuse of an attempt of a tv show. The boots on the ground perspective of a marine company or an odst recruit going through bootcamp and into war either right before or during the human covenant war would be so good. Like think band of brothers or the pacific but halo. To see the ODST perspective on the spartans only seeing the Spartans IIs in rumor and speculation would be interesting. One thing which I find somewhat unrealistic is the shame associated with not making it past the training or tryout phases. I am in an infantry unit and some of my colleagues have tried out for special operations units, and they failed. They weren't judged badly when they came back to us. That said, this is one unit in one military, so there probably is some truth to the shame angle, as unconstructive as it can be for unit cohesion.

I’ve seen this happen with Recon Marines being dropped from the course and transferred over to other MOS. Higher ups either like them for their motivation or dislike them for their infantry/recon culture such as faded uniform or longer hair than regulations. There are many things in the Halo universe that don’t quite fit in with modern day military specially since Halo’s military is based upon that of the US, but I’d assume those changes are explained by the simple fact that it is the 26th century, so probably UNSC propaganda “brainwashed” troops into believing that failing ODST course is something to be ashamed of?

Not exactly. In conventional forces, the reconnaissance course for the Army is either ARC (Army Reconnaissance Course) or much more relevant is RSLC (Recon/Surveillance Leaders Course). I know this because I was Army reconnaissance. RSLC is for conventional forces that need some of the best skills.
The BRC is the USMC’s qualifying recon school for a recon platoon, awarding the MOS 0321- Reconnaissance Marine. It is hard, and focuses heavily on amphibious/hydrographic reconnaissance and swimming. It is loosely considered a qualification and selection course.
More likely, though, is ODST’s would go to special operations schools for qualifying skills like actual special operations do now. These include SFSC (Special Forces Sniper Course), SFAUC (Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat), and SFARTAETC (Special Forces Advanced Targeting Reconnaissance/Target Analysis Exploitation Techniques).
My feel from being a Halo fan and playing the games is that even though they are shown as special operations, ODST’s are kinda more like really elite conventional infantry with a special insertion technique.

US Marine here, fun fact. High level SF units often have a similar recruitment process as seen with the ODSTs. For example, groups like the navy seals, MARSOC, and scout snipers have requirements of already being enlisted in a combat MOS, or just outright Infantry only. Personally I wasn't SF or anything, but i did take plenty of specialized courses such as fast rope and the designated marksmans course where there would be all sorts of operators getting certifications their command wanted them to have. I was honestly surprised when meeting and talking with them that many didn't even start in the branch that they were now such a high level in. USMC snipers, MARSOC, Army Rangers, and even the Seals recruit from all over the different branches.

Factor in that they probably go through some of the most ridiculous training devised and also whatever fresh level of hell that the UNSCDF came up with for orbital assault school to be able to operate in space and to utilize a drop pod, and they are on the level of voodoo that frankly we just have probably never had anyone that's a real human being go through before that's been devised by any reasonably sane training command by any modern military.

Send in the normal solo pods to hit the AA and open a window for the larger pods (which have more hardware for survivability and more robust retro thrusters) Than the larger pods can act as makeshift battlements featuring optional friendly AA, AT, and Anti infantry weapons, providing cover safety for Pelicans to use as a beachhead.
This is one example of a plausible mission profile.
They could also be modular, and deploy special prefab structures.

Need a firing position with a good overlook, drop a (unoccupied in flight) Pill box on that hill over there. (Don’t need as much retrograde for that, as you would want the pill box to partly bury itself)

Also, the ODSTs were like the old school special ops outfits in that you HAD to be a vet of ground ops with experience of several firefights and a tour or 2 under your belt.
"Not exactly a rookie, no ODST is." ODST's were combat veterans with probably a corporal's level of combat expericence, thus the rookie probably was possibly higher rank prior to being deranked back to PFC in ODST Training. ODST's were being burned through in the ever increasingly harsh fighting especially from 2545 to the end of the war when things really ESCALATED. Some like Alpha-9(our favorite boys from Halo 3 ODST) WERE prior regular marines that did transition to the ODST's in a more normal fashion. But the 2549-2552 cadre of the last batch of ODST's like the majority of those we see in the Trilogy? Probably like in the time period of Operation Market Garden to April '45: Fast tracked and hoped that veteran troopers in the cadres of the jump units would make up for the deficient training of being fast tracked and the prereq's being dumped in favor of fielding units as fast as possible.
Thus you get troopers like Ramos who probably would've been denied a billet at any point prior to the period of ~2549 of being a trooper and told to get more experience as a regular grunt before being considered.

They simply want to see, when the chips are down, when there's no hope left, with no orders, no feedback, no one to tell u to keep pushing, no one to berate u, no one around to help u up, and the objective still miles away, do u keep on pushing? All of the characters act like assholes, but you know it's just because they're losing the war, they're all replacements, and they're about to drop from orbit into a Covenant-controlled city that they can only get out of by shooting their way out with their own guns. The only way they cope with it is with a "don't give a shit" attitude, but despite the bellyaching, after surviving insurmountable odds and devastating injury and stealing a phantom just to survive, they still turn it around and go right back into hell when ordered to. It's such a brief moment but it is really the thing that turns them from a bunch of assholes into a group of heroes. Imagine barely surviving the most un-survivable event of your entire life and then having to turn around and go back into it.

That's what warfare evolution is. Go back 500ish years for example, knights had to train since they were kids learning how to ride horses, clean & maintain their armour & use swords, maces & shields etc. All that changed overnight when firearms were introduced; soldiers been training for weeks on how to use a musket. Spartans are natural evolution of all that. It'll get to the point where you can just download a "war print" to your brain on everything warfare related from tactics & asset use accumulated from thousands of years of warfare history.

They’re actually more of a close equivalent of the US Army’s 82’d Airborne. Their job is to be deployed within 18 hours, jump into enemy territory, take airfields and set up LZ’s.
Also, MOS is just pronounced M O S

ODSTs are closer to the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment. Army Rangers are special operations while the 82nd Airborne is not.

@@johnk.7523 the rangers have a different mission set, the only equivalency is the special operations umbrella. ODST is still closer to the 82nd

The initial part of submitting a package to get accepted into the ODST candidate program sounds similar to something like the hoops we gotta jump through to join SEALs or MARSOC. That being said I'm good being a mechanic, I'll fix stuff in the field or back in garrison, but I'd rather stay on the ground.
