Holy shit looking at those two side by side just amazes the crap out of me by how small that engine is in regards to the power it produces. Just slightly larger but 3x the power of the turbo miata engine. Wow.
Ohhhhhhh mannnn!!! When you place the engine in the engine bay for the first time, it gave me goosebumps!!! I was yelling at my screen, "Duuuuude! Yesssss!!!"

Quite suprised to see how small the LS3 is compared to the original engine, it really fits in nice. Do you know the weight diffrence between both engines?
First videos of yours that I have watched. Very well done! This swap is much harder than I thought it would be. I have done some Vega swaps and they are a breeze compared to this. Something I noticed that would really help you working on stuff like this is an air ratchet. They make the job soooo much faster! Thanks for showing us!
I'm not at all a fan of pushrod engines, but that LS3 really is the perfect package for the Miata. It's shocking how little metal cutting was needed to fit it into the engine bay, and how much usable space there is around it. It looks like the exhaust will be a challenge to mount, but....that would be the case with any engine swap.
Tom man words cannot explain the beauty and power that car is gonna have. Much much respect and im a master ase tech and done a lot of mods but this blew my socks off great work!!!
A friend in Florida has the same setup, managed to get 800hp. When I say built, I mean built. But right now I'd be happy with low end torque and no boost lag. Should have gone with LS.
walperstyle Everyone underestimates the cost of building a car properly. I'm not sure why that is, but it's always the case. Yes, everyone can do things for less cost, but if there's one thing I've learned over the years done cheap and done right are two completely different things.
walperstyle I see the benefits to both setups, it just comes down to personal preference I suppose. High power boosted four cylinders are fun and I love them, but they can make you pull your hair out sometimes!
I see some of the comments indicating a "class envy" sentiment. I would ask any and all of you who are of this mindset, to please turn to your bible, and look up " James 3.16 ". Jealousy is one of the worst attributes a person can have. Be happy for Mitch/Tom , he is clearly intelligent, and has capitalized upon his intelligence , that is the beauty of the United States of America. No need for class envy liberal minded people to try to nullify Mitch/ Tom , his videos are awesome.
People don't understand that you have to pay to play. Cars are an expensive hobby..... no way around it. I've been building and racing Mustangs for 15 years and I've spent tens of thousands of dollars. No way around it. You want the good stuff you have to dish out the cash. People have too expensive taste for their budgets. Creativity and doing your own work will only get you so far. I've always had a main job to pay bills and another part time gig to fund my hobby. After years of work and school I finally afford one job and still have fun car money.
MetalTeamster Thank you for saying that sir. I suppose when you only see the results of hard work, it's easy to overlook the effort it took to get there.
Awesome video, as much pain, blood, sweat and tears this project is going to bring you. This is going to be an epic build and have many video's, until the final beast is complete. Keep up the good work sir!!!!!!!
Haha! While most people binge what "Game Of Thrones" etc I'm binge-watching "Tom's Turbo Garage"....couldn't help but wonder though for an 11yr old car (at the time of the build), I couldn't get over how clean the car is even when the front and rear subframes have been removed and dismantled and the engine bay stripped back to bare. That car is super clean...!
Spectacular, Tom. Loved the light coming out of the engine box when you opened it (we share some favorite movies, it would appear ;). And that shot of the chassis being lowered onto the LS...awesome!
Wow, talk about a dream build!!! That is quite the powerplant.... For the sake of your bank account and family's sanity I sure hope Summit's sponsorship was very generous lol. Great stuff!!! Tom's Turbo Garage
Something a lot of people don't understand. They see 6.2l and automatically assume it's a massive motor. When it reality it's not much bigger then a 4 cyl.
Also most people probably haven't seen the two next to each other before. I have heard how small the LS engines are but haven't seen a size comparison. It can be hard to tell when its already in an engine bay.
Karadon1969 Yes, it is amazing compact. Even in the shot of them side by side, the LS3 is perched much higher on it's crate. At the same level they are incredibly close in size.
Physical dimensions isn't the only thing to consider. Miata 1.8 engine with accessories and transmission weighs 433 pounds. Ls1 with complete harness, accessories and t56 trans all from a camaro is 609 pounds. When you really sit down and think about that, it's not that much. The LS3 has basically 2 of everything compared to the stock BP engine. Swapping out the k-member and using tubular control arms will help offset the weight difference pretty significantly.

Now I see why a turbo is probably not in the near future. Getting used to taming a 525hp 2000lb street monster is going to be plenty of fun. Great video as always Tom!
Another awesome vid, we are lucky you upload these with how busy you are as it is. After some mileage those spark plug wires can be a REAL pain to get off the spark plug end...I used to work on these engines (LS1,LS2) daily...it requires some serious tongue poking and in some cases pure furiousness to get them off lol.
Yes, you were right by using this LS376 engine and not the 20b... The 20b weights a bit less than double!!!! That was a surprise for me! Keep up the good work!!!
Hi Mike and thank you! The rotary is a great engine, but folks have the notion that since it has fewer parts, it weighs far less than anything out there. It's a heavy little beast.
Hey dude, I am a new subscriber my brother recommended your channel to me. I must say I am very impressed with your automotive knowledge and quality of work. Keep it up.
It's just nice and refreshing to see a clean organized guy working on a huge project and keeping it funny, im learing lots and one day i hope to do the same as you! except putting a 2jz in a R32 Skyline. a boy can dream ;)
Thanks man! I like talking with folks on here, I figured if they take the time to comment, it's only right that I take the time to reply. Sometimes it takes me a little while though!
Tom, again as always.. Fantastic job on the video's. The LS3 video's are fantastic, although the wife hates them because she knows that I've been itching to put an LS in my NB. Keep up the great work!
Hi Paul and thank you sir! You just need the proper justification. The stock engine is dangerously underpowered and laden with antiquated technology. The LS3 is required for proper highway passing situations and various other safety reasons. :-D
New subscriber here. Enjoy watching the progress. I want to stuff one of those LS engines in something, don't know what yet but learning from many of these videos. Thanks for the videos.
Oh my my… things r coming together… i love it keep up the amazing work… I actually didn't think that the LS3 is this compact… i love it its amazing… to sum up my words… woooohhooooooo! 😉
And i spoke too early lol. I will send u some pics and builds once the horrible cold goes away. Currently i have my 2014 fiesta st, 91 talon tsi, and 96 240sx. Oh yeah and don't forget the bike 79 kawasaki sr650. Too much fun stuff.
I love watching this swap! Thanks for posting such detailed videos! I am doing an ls3 erod crate motor swap with a t56 magnum 6 speed into my 1992 s10. Good luck on the build! Looks like it coming along great for you
Raymond Markin Hi Raymond and thank you for checking it out! Glad you find the videos helpful and best of luck with your S10, that sounds like an awesome project!
At this point in the series, without having watched future episodes yet, I can guess that changing the spark plugs in this will require movement of the engine? On my '78 V8 Sunbird project you have to remove the bolt from the motor mount and jack up the engine on each side one at a time to raise the engine high enough for the plug socket to clear the frame.
I would rather see an engine like this in an older BMW maybe E30 or E24. Can you do another build but with euro car/motor? Also clean up engine bay shave and tuck everything so it is super clean like they do with those VW's... Maybe you could do an old VW bug also? let me know what you think
Of cource! I really enjoy this v8 miata series as much as i enjoy mighty car mods. And that says a lot;) i subbed and cant waith untill a new miata video comes up. Cheers from Denmark!
Great video Man as always! It is a pleasure to watch how you working with cars, all your tools that you using , how you pay attention to safety and how clean is your workshop! Like from me =) Waiting for your next episodes
It does. Project Minky on here, putting a celica gt4 turbo, engine & 4wd drive system in a old school b.l. Mini. Fantastic engineering
sidewayssam Thank you as always for the very kind words and support sir! I love Project Binky and have been following their build since the beginning! They are doing amazing work with it!
The one thing I would spend extra money on is custom built headers and exhaust. A V8 sounds awesome but when you put a full same length header exhaust as in every tube is the exact same length as the other you hear every single cylinder and it sounds unreal and so badass. Look up Tanner foust and his drift car he has headers that way and it's literally music. It gives it that supercar sound like a Ferrari.
Rewatching this, I was surprised how mild that cam is. A Crow 871777 cam, dual valve springs and BTR trunnion upgrade, and you'd squeeze a fair bit more NA power out. Exhaust might be your only limiting factor.
Very curious what you are going to do with the PPF. Seen people remove it completely and also seen people making brackets. Hardly anything to find on the internet how people deal with this in an engine conversion. Keep up the good work! :D
100% love it! A word from an older mechanic, wear shade 5-8 goggles or glasses when grinding, i have black streaks in my eyes permanently from watching myself grind metal for years. God damn. After your last video, I can't believe how completely you had to tear this car apart. Putting it back together is going to be hell.
At 11:30, the hardware is not zinc-coated, it appears to be cadmium plated. There is a difference. The reference material in this video is invaluable.
Now I see why a turbo is probably not in the near future. Getting used to taming a 525hp 2000lb street monster is going to be plenty of fun. Great video as always Tom!
Reece Ramsey Thank you Reece and yeah, this should keep the old turbo bug from biting...I hope! :-D Oh and I almost forgot to say...REEEEEEEEEECE!!
Making a dream car is on my bucket list I’m loving watching this keep it up!
Another awesome vid, we are lucky you upload these with how busy you are as it is. After some mileage those spark plug wires can be a REAL pain to get off the spark plug end...I used to work on these engines (LS1,LS2) daily...it requires some serious tongue poking and in some cases pure furiousness to get them off lol.
irit8r Thank you sir and I really appreciate the tip on the plug wires!
This should be required viewing for Mazda engineers.
It's a heavy little beast.
all that power with exhaust manifolds, wow
Hey dude, I am a new subscriber my brother recommended your channel to me. I must say I am very impressed with your automotive knowledge and quality of work. Keep it up.
bennydman666 Thank you sir and welcome!
It's just nice and refreshing to see a clean organized guy working on a huge project and keeping it funny, im learing lots and one day i hope to do the same as you! except putting a 2jz in a R32 Skyline. a boy can dream ;)
Damn that is going to be sooooooooo freakin awesome when it is finished!!! Love the work Tom!
THEMrPykelet Thank you sir, glad you're enjoying it!
I like how you've responded to all these comments haha. Cant't wait to see the finished product. Right on
Thanks man! I like talking with folks on here, I figured if they take the time to comment, it's only right that I take the time to reply. Sometimes it takes me a little while though!
Lookin' good Tom! I can't wait to drive it! ;)
Joe Wrenches HAHAHA!! Thanks JOE!
Hi Kevin and welcome! Glad you're enjoying the videos and have fun plotting and scheming your future LS powered beast! :-D
Helllll yes!! Looking forward to the next. Great job from Australia!
christallica18 Thank you sir, I appreciate that! Please tell everyone there I said hi. :-D
Oh my my… things r coming together… i love it keep up the amazing work… I actually didn't think that the LS3 is this compact… i love it its amazing… to sum up my words… woooohhooooooo! 😉
azam ethawi Thank you Azam and glad you are enjoying the videos!
That LS3 is just so beautiful
Duke Silver Haha, I agree!
I cant wait until its finished and running. Keep up the good work
Thank you Sam, I appreciate that!
Have I seen this lovely garage on the Garage Journal forum? Amazing work space brother!
And i spoke too early lol. I will send u some pics and builds once the horrible cold goes away. Currently i have my 2014 fiesta st, 91 talon tsi, and 96 240sx. Oh yeah and don't forget the bike 79 kawasaki sr650. Too much fun stuff.
Ben Hannig Nice collection Ben, looking forward to the pics!
Great episode Tom. Thanks for the consistent uploads
Jess Neal Thank you Jess, glad you're enjoying them!
Tom, Another amazing video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you see you at the shootout later this year!!!!!
Thank you Clint and oh yeah, I'll see ya there!
Fits like a glove!
Oh yeah!
Very clean work . This car will be a animal !!!!!!! Great work!!
Thank you Nick, I appreciate that!
I love this series. Reason why I subscribed. Love the build Tom and look forward to more videos. Thanks!

Jevgeni Hotejenkov Thank you sir, I appreciate the kind words!
It does. Indeed look like it was designed to fit, looking good ,do love the way you work, you do everything as you should, and better than most professionals, could show you a project in the uk I am following ,you would love it! Project Minky on here, putting a celica gt4 turbo, engine & 4wd drive system in a old school b.l. Mini. Fantastic engineering
I've also been watching project Binky, very good! Although they only post updates every few months.
sidewayssam Thank you as always for the very kind words and support sir! I love Project Binky and have been following their build since the beginning! They are doing amazing work with it!
Tom's Turbo Garage welcome, i love PROPER engineering!
Love your work Tom.
Is it possible that we could get some kind of garage tour that kinda shows your setup and the turbo garage car collection?
caleb Reedy Hi Caleb, I've been wanting to do that at some point, thanks for the suggestion.
Rewatching this, I was surprised how mild that cam is.
A Crow 871777 cam, dual valve springs and BTR trunnion upgrade, and you'd squeeze a fair bit more NA power out. Exhaust might be your only limiting factor.
Love the quality of your videos! Great job Tom!
Tru Shine Thank you my friend!
Very curious what you are going to do with the PPF. Seen people remove it completely and also seen people making brackets. Hardly anything to find on the internet how people deal with this in an engine conversion. Keep up the good work! :D
