- In this episode I remove the bonnet with help from some friends, and sort through the large pile of exterior and interior chrome plated parts ready for rechroming.

I think you should paint the car pastel or neon pink. It would make it easier to find if stolen. You just have to look for the quick paint job on the E type.

Looking great and will really pop once that chrome gets replated and back on. Hopefully the lack of salt on Australian roads will have it lasting a good while! I noticed the cheeky roof panel that will fill in the Webasto… looks like a perfect fit! Can’t wait to see it welded into place. Also good to see some more original paint lurking underneath and that should be a nice reference for the respray down the track. She’s coming along nicely, well done!

I am literally wincing as you keep adding more and more to the 're-chrome' pile. That's gonna cost a fortune, let us know when you get the bill! Unfortunately, my resto will have to make do with a tube of Autosol. Anyhow, great video, look forward to the next.
😂thanks Steve, I know what you mean! I’ve had to be judicious with the re-chroming on my ‘68 S-Type and Autosol can retrieve some tired looking parts. For this E-Type it has to go up a level so the car will look great for the next 50+ years.
I'm having such a good time looking at your videos :) I got some of my etype parts re-chromed at a company in England many years ago (apprx 8 years) they started to pit and the job was poor so I need to do it again. Can you recomend a company which performs a good job and decent without rocketship prices?

Hello Thim, you’ll see in one of my episodes that I have used Marque Restore in Coventry for the chrome on this and another Jaguar I have restored. I wouldn’t say they are the cheapest but I’m sure they are competitive for price and having seen the amount of skill and work that goes into rechroming then I can highly recommend them as they really know what they’re doing.

Graham, You are doing a nice job. Dare I ask how much the chroming cost? How does that compare to buying all new parts? I know the repro parts are not as good as the originals. I have just bought a 67 FHC to restore. Can't wait to start!
Thanks Johnny, another ‘67 FHC 😍! I wouldn’t consider buying repro if the originals can be replated. It’s a ~£3k investment (my episode on aluminium polishing give a small insight into the skill involved in polishing) depending on how much you get done. It might be possible to leave the door frames for instance. Good luck and I hope my films help! 🤞🏼
Are these parts really all chrome, or are some of them stainless and can be polished back up to a nice shine? I'm just starting in on a '67 FHC restoration and the dollar signs associated with all of this chrome are giving me heart palpitations.
Yes I'm pretty sure they're all chrome. The platers I use in Coventry will assess them all, most are easy (for them!) but some of the cast parts made from monkey/pot metal can be difficult to re-plate. It cost over £2k GPB to re-chrome over 20 parts on my '68 S-Type a couple of years ago, including the front bumper (much bigger than anything on the E-Type) and all 4 over-riders and front grille surround that needed a lot of repair work. Serious money but not ridiculous for what they did and the difference it made. The alternative is be selective on the amount of original patina you're happy to keep. I didn't do the door frames on my S-Type as I couldn't justify it (they look pretty good, just not perfect), but I did do the handles (x4 of course). Hope that helps.
@@fossewayclassiccarworkshop Thanks. Curious to hear what you find. Things like the window gasket trims, the little bit the clips onto the door threshold, etc... I had "assumed" were polished stainless. I live in California and chrome shops are almost extinct here due to environmental restrictions. Where you can get it done it is eye-wateringly expensive; multiples of what you are seeing I'd think.
The door threshold strips are fairly cheap to replace from SNG Barratt or Martin Robey, the larger bits like bumpers will need redoing. Might be worth shipping to the UK (might be cheaper?). Happy to pass on contacts if it helps.
