The soundtrack from "Across The Universe" (2007) is great. I have this movie & have watched it many times. Love all the Beatles music used in it to tell a story. The actors used in this movie all have great voices. And love seeing so many cameo appearances made by Bono, Eddie Izzard, Joe Cocker, Salma Hayek etc.

The backdrop you were asking about. The movie is set in the 60s -- which is fitting considering that it's the Beatles music. The riots were from the Detroit Riots in 1967, which you can look up and learn more about than you probably want to know. The husband and father was killed in Vietnam. We had a war zone in a literal war zone...and we had a race-motivated war zone in our own country (I'm from the US) at the same time.

Actually, it was the younger girl's boyfriend who died in Vietnam, the older woman accepting the flag was his mother.
The little boy was the little brother of Jojo, the man who puts dirt on the grave at the end

You should really watch the full movie. It takes the texts of all the Beatles songs...but turns them into a completely separate narrative, telling a through story through Beatles lyrics.
And I will say that the peoplel they got to play Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were....INSANELY talented.
I was indifferent to the Beatles until I saw this movie. And it was then when I saw the music used to tell a through story that I GOT it. I really...GOT it. What people saw in their music.

This is a must watch movie!! Personally I loved what they did with the music, yet I know that a lot of Beatles fans aren’t so keen of the style (and of course that is their right.)”❤
My two favourite songs from the movie are Hey Jude, and Blackbird, definitely think about reacting to them or just enjoy during the film on your own. ❤

I think the reason the name Carol Wood sounds familiar is because Even Rachel Wood is also in this movie, similar names.
BTW Check out some of Even Rachel Woods work (her voice is to die for,) Movie Strange Magic has her and Alan Cumming (who I’m pretty sure you have heard of. ♥️

As someone else noted, the movie happens during the time of the Vietnam war; most is set in the US, but there are parts in the UK and (as scenes of war) Vietnam. Definitely touches on the anti-war sentiment at the time, as well as the effects of war on those fighting, some of the hippies and drug life of that time; amongst so many other things. All with the music of the Beatles helping to tell the story. Worth a watch IMO. (Though, be aware, as with the themes, some parts of the movie get a little weird/trippy.)

That young girl, Lucy, lost her boyfriend, not her father. And that mother lost her son.

Detroit is the major city in the state of Michigan, pper Great Lakes USA. It is as unstable as any city, but not as bad as portrayed in this video. Of course that is small comfort to the people who have to live it everyday.

The thing that gets me about the visuals ... this is fictionalized, but very much NOT FICTION. My mom's high school sweetheart died in Vietnam. I had friends whose fathers were MIA, and it really tore them up clear into adulthood. The Detroit riot happened, and yes people died. Some perhaps were looting, but the bullets don't care what you were doing. Real people's brothers and sons were lost. This was real trauma that happened to real people. Then realize you should multiply it by the 10's of thousands who lost loved ones.

Just watch the effing movie dude rather than watching one clip from the middle and questioning the context. If you're just going to listen to it as radio music, don't bother watching the video.
