- The World Health Organization has declared the B.1.1.529 a variant of concern and renamed it Omicron. As the concern grows, several nations have banned flight resulting in plunging of global stock markets and oil prices. As per the WHO this variant has a large number of mutations and some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, it said.

Being detected in SA doesn't mean it originated in SA. Our scientists are good and transparent, but now our country is being punished for that. This variant likely came from outside, but was detected in South Africa.
Yes, people say south africa has good genomic surveillance , and since it has a long branch of mutations (arose form 2020 variant not delta) , it likely circulated undetected in places with not so much genomic testing for a long time and picked up so many mutations .
