Backhand Slice Approach Shot 👉 ua-cam.com/video/xxyZVP93ekE/v-deo.html
Finally someone breaks down the forehand slice. Such an underrated shot. Players with a forehand slice and who can also use topspin are at a higher level.
I couple of decades ago I regularly played against this player.
His best shot was, by far, an offensive sliced forehand, hit with a pace like you wouldn't believe.
The start of his swing was much higher than yours.
Then he swung downward as if his life depended on it.
The result?
A high pace, low bounce ball that skidded near the baseline, then the ball barely lost pace after the low bounce.
It drove me crazy!
You are my Tennis guru. Apart from my trainer, your videos help me a lot to fix my mistakes. I must say your channel is one of the best among all the tennis coaching channels on UA-cam.
I started using a Forehand slice after suffering a right knee tweak as well as having wrist pains. Indeed it has given me more insight into properly hitting a forehand volley and also how to improve my backhand slice. And you are absolutely right, when not careful balls will sail out a lot when returning high pace balls. Lastly, my friends have destroyed the floaty slice shots so definitely only useful when reaching for tough angle shots.
I can’t believe you made all the demonstrations in a wet court. Slippery court can be dangerous. Love this content as always!
Some time ago I also decided to hit a backhand/forehand slice only in a situation I really don’t have enough time for a proper topspin shot, because quite often it’s easy to counterattack against a slice shot, and by hitting it you are putting yourself in a difficult situation.
Thank you for making an instructional video on the FH slice!! I enjoy watching your lessons and tell all my friends and co-workers about your videos.
Great job as usual!
I’ve suddenly started using a forehand slice but with a semi western grip and I can hit it as hard as a topspin almost and it’s lethal! Weird but I crushed in my match yesterday using it!
I like Roger Federer forehand slice misleading trick shot! I would like to make a video about it
Nic, I've run out of superlatives to describe/praise your MOST EXCELLENT video lessons, sir. Not only are you extremely informative (and entertaining, especially you interacting with Shamir!), but having played at a high level yourself, your lessons are always so current, so topical.
I mean, I've watched tennis since I was a young lad - I'm so old I remember Bud Collins from back when tennis was only televised on PBS (!) so suffice to say, I've been watching a LONG TIME - and I NEVER saw someone slice on the forehand side, NEVER. Now it seems like everybody's doing it and bang! here comes a lesson from Nic on what else, the forehand slice.
Not only do you know what's hot, what's "the buzz" at this particular point in time, but YOU'VE DONE IT ALL BEFORE! So you're the perfect person to explain it to us, and thank our lucky stars, you _feel_ like explaining it to us. So thank you, sir! Thank you for your time and expertise. And for sharing it with us. I hope God/The Universe/The Holy Whatever is being kind to you and your loved ones, because - you deserve it, Saint Nic!
Thank you James 🙏 Glad you like the content
I have a good forehand topspin which is my go to. I developed a forehand slice due to a few reasons. Short, low balls are very hard to get under for a topspin ball. It’s much easier to slice a low ball. Also, since most players don’t see this shot it’s unexpected and it moves like crazy in the air and after it hits. It also stays low. All of that makes it harder on an opponent. Also, since they’re expecting a harder topspin, they stay back, again making a harder shot for them to get to and generally they have to hit it up. I love it and it’s coming along nicely. Just gives a player another option. When I played yesterday, I hit the shot of the day which was a shot angled slice on the ad side which when it hit, it hit the line and spun beautifully to the right off the court. I’m still pumped about that shot. Worth the court time payment. HA
So glad I found this video. I've been trying to hit the FH slice on my own w/o instruction, and the results have been less than impressive. I can't wait to get on the practice court and put your lessons to work. Thanks so much, and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Thank you Scott
Same to you
As with all of your instructional video… VERY WELL DONE!!
Thank-you for what you do for ALL OF US!!! 😊
Patrick
This video is so helpful! My trainer asked me to use the forehand slice in every shot, which sounds like a wrong approach.
Thank you. What a great coach you are.
Thank you! Have a wonderful holiday season!
Thank you, same to you
Another great video!
Great video Nick! Every shot seems to be an emergency! 😀
😂😂🙌🙌
Thanks to telling me about Monica Niculescu. I am fascinated w/ her play style and how she wins matches at the pro level. In some videos she will hit slices to bring opponent in and then finish w/ topspin FH! The way she slices also is interesting, it looks more like a 'V' rather than a 'U'
Thank you very much
Thanks for great lesson! Do you have a video about how to deal with high balls on the forehand side?
Try this 👉 ua-cam.com/video/fPqi0msSSdA/v-deo.html
When catching up to a ball from behind, like in the case of a lob, I will rotate my grip on forehand a bit, helps a lot.
Rainy Slice...Good for sure!! ;)
Very fine sir
truly awesome video, Jeff. This is a very practical shot to use in matches against players who don't like to bend down
@@IntuitiveTennisgreat video Jeff
Exelente , gracias
The squash shot with lots of wrist action when I’m stretched is one of my favorite shots to play (when it works!) because the opponent is pegged back as the ball just doesn’t drop.
Is a forehand slice a good alternative instead of the backhand slice?
I have tennis elbow at the moment (my backhand slice used to be good) so I can’t hit a good backhand slice right now anymore, but I can still hit good forehand slices. Can I just use my forehand slice as I would normally my backhand slice? I can also curve the ball from left to right with my forehand slice.
good stuff
The interesting thing about being able to slice on both sides is that unlike topspin, it is much easier to hit sideslice on an underslice ball than a topspin. A forehand slice from the center of the baseline can basically be a slice serve that hits the service box and arcs away from the court so the opponent has to connect to the ball in the alley. If you have that on both forehand and backhand sides the area that the opponent needs to cover is huge. Aside from that, it is often more beneficial to hit that kind of shot with low speed so by the time the opponent connects, the ball is near ankle height. Since you don't need to hit with pace and can just deflect, this gives you a higher margin for error to compensate for the lower margin over the net.
Nicolescu vs Santoro: an eternal match (6h duration - one set)...;)
😂😂🙌🙌
Thank you for the great video. When I play slice short, I play with old people coz they can't run much. Oops!!!
Hey Nic
Thanks for your vid. Great explanations.
I use the vH slice as a return to the middle of the court like Wawrinka does on both sides. i hardly play a normal vh any more as a return. What do you think about vh slize returns?
Cheers from germany Jan
Danke Jan
I’ll cover chip returns in another video...
@@IntuitiveTennis Great. Merry Christmas:)
Hi Nikola,
Is 2018 babolat pure drive your choice of racquet? I remember that you like 2015 babolat pure drive better.
I’m getting quite comfortable with the 2017
First!
Edit: it is a defensive shot indeed. It's great if you can use it on the slide though.
2nd comment❤️
Which ball thrower do u use pls send the link🙏🙏
Useful tip Nick. Juniors & Juveniles find it hard to play. But it's a useful shot when playing against slow movers , tall players & fat players who dont bend & can be a winner.
I'd rather beg to differ. FH chopper can be quite fast and aggressive enough to beat topspin FH at the rec level in particular. Let me prove it. And I'll show you sooner rather than later.
I love these videos but I also disagree I use 60% forehand slice go 40 % top spin and win many matches people really struggle to return deep fast slice shots into the corner of the court
Very useful lesson. Forehand slice is a much underrated weapon. Good for approach and disruptive for rhythm.
Is the slice service return much different? Is it intuitive or more of a planned shot?
Hi Steve, I’ll cover chip returns in a separate video...
@@IntuitiveTennis Looking forward to it. Hope you have a safe and happy holiday. Hoping to get back down to Florida once things settle down...although that could still be awhile.
👍🎾👊🏻
Forehand slice drop shot is my favorite shot.
👑
You can hit an even better FH slice if you learn how to pronate you wrist as you hit it, Following through with your palm facing down. It creates more effortless power and spin. It can't be done on every shot, but when you get a sitter, it's devastating. This is for people who hit most of their FHs with slice, as I do....and you want to use an Eastern FH grip
Watch matches of Guillermo Coria and Andy Murray for the best Forehand Slice in business!
I have a decent serve still trying to get better on my second serve, and pretty good backhand, but my forehand is absolutely abysmal I think I only get 5 out of every 10 four hands over the net, and I think only like 3 actually get in out of 10. So I ended up slicing almost every one of my four hands just because I don’t have much confidence in my forehand, and my coach really doesn’t like this😂, it kind of pisses him off. But my excuse is that Febreze Santoro and Monica Niculescu slice almost all there forhands. I definitely don’t wanna keep slicing almost all my forhands.
Gasquet lately has been using the forehand slice quite a bit, certainly to save energy. Of course his technique on that shot is superb. He was always a bit lazy I suppose
Forehand slice aka Jimmy Connors's regular forehand =)
On your final comments about the over-use of the forehand slice, isn't a key reason recreational players over-use it that it's a technically much easier shot to execute than a conventional forehand drive is? As you demonstrate here, there's nothing to it. You just raise your racket then cut across the ball in one motion. A conventional forehand is vastly more complicated, requiring a drop phase, a swing phase including coordinated movements of hips, arm and shoulders, and a finish phase. Furthermore, whereas if anything goes wrong with a forehand slice (eg the wind catches the ball), adjustments to the stroke are easy because they just require little wrist or elbow tweaks, almost anything unexpected happening on a conventional forehand means the shot being seriously miss-hit and probably going out or in the net. A conventional forehand is probably at least ten times as hard to hit as a forehand slice. That's why recreational players over-use the slice.
Why is a backhand slice a normal shot and forhand slice only last resort type of shot? This doesn't make sense to me...
My question is: why does Monica Niculescu always use this shot then? Is it intuitive for her to use it 95% of the time, or is it a bad habit for her that hurts her game?
She hits the forehand normal in practice, it’s two-handed I think. So it most likely mental
My coach says i should learn the backhand slice. I havent bothered as it just seems like a worse shot and dont want to confuse my backhand. I assume i’m wrong, however you just said always hit your forehand when you can, so why bother using a backhand slice unless you need to? I don’t understand why one is useable and the other is not
Great question. Bh is generally the more defensive side so slice needs to be utilized. Also bh slice is biomechanically the more simple shot compared to fh slice.
@@IntuitiveTennis ok, perfect response thank you. I think i understand what you mean as i always need more time for my BH setup than FH (probably due to closed vs open stances)
:)
Curiously the backhand is the most beautiful shot in tennis but the forehand the ugliest.
