I have a GX460 and I love it. I installed Toytec 2.5 coilover front/rear shocks with OME UCA and Air Bag conversion on 285/70/17. I love it. I added MTS /Crawl Control and external transmission cooler. It's the best package for my needs. I wouldn't do extreme rock crawling with it(if you're going to rock crawl get a Wrangler) ......just my opinion.

I have a 2000 4Runner with a 2" lift on Bilstein 5100 shocks and OME springs, SPC adjustable upper control arms, front diff drop, 285-70-17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W's on 17"x8" Level 8 MK6 wheels. Had to do minimal trimming of the wheel wells, and have a slight rub in reverse near full lock. Rides great on the street and climbed over everything in it's path on Imogene and Engineer passes last summer. Gets 18 mpg on the highway and averaged 15 mpg combined everyday driving.
1st Gen Sequoia is a great off-road vehicle. Put some decent tires on it, maybe a 2-3" lift, and just go.
Hell yeah, it’s my off-roader. Take the rest sway bar off with a longer rear shock and it out flexes any jk without super wild mods. 12-13 inches of rear suspension travel! And ALL 1st gen sequoias have the Atrac system!
The GX 470 is probably the most under-rated offroader of all time.
lot are buying the older ones and 1998-2000 LX 460 just need to ditch those cargo robbing fold down 3rd row seats
Bought a super clean soccer mom special a couple years ago for $7500. Put tires on it. Built a sweet sleeping platform in the back. I. Love. This. Truck. It does everything well. Bulletproof. 18 mpg.

That or the 1st gen sequoia. For far less than a gx you get land cruiser size, and stronger driveline than the gx470.

One of my biggest regrets is not buying an FJ. They were so popular in Fayetteville NC that I was taken by surprise when they discontinued them. I always loved the FJ and I hope they bring it back
We just bought a 22 4Runner TRD OR Premium in Army Green and were very excited about it until noticing a strange vibration and grinding noise from the front end. Did some research and came to learn of the needle bearing issue affecting 4Runners, Tacomas and FJ Cruisers for years and years. Now we're awaiting a new front diff and CV axle shaft from the dealership. Even though it'll be covered under warranty it's extremely disappointing and kind of concerning that the front end of our new 4Runner will be torn apart and reassembled at a dealership. It seems quite a few 22s are having this issue too. For a company that is so well known for "QDR" it's surprising the poor design of the front diff/needle bearing hasn't been revised. There is a well-known aftermarket fix from ECGS, but we don't feel like we should spend out of pocket to resolve Toyota's poor design. Apologies for the long post, but it seems like a good spot to vent some frustration!

I don't think I will ever sell my Jeep TJ Rubicon as sooooo much of it is still mechanical. It is so easy to work on and modify. There is something soooooo satisfying about that, I don't know why.
They are all good because of Toyota reliability. Can't go wrong with any Toyota/Lexus.. we got the GX460 specifically for off roading
The limit is more around 34" tires and 3" lift before upgrading the CVs and tubbing the wheel wells/needing wheel spacers. With upgraded CVs you can go as big as you want.
I sent the 200 series land cruiser the greatest vehicle of all time? It’s easily the greatest off-road 4 x 4 vehicle of all time. More time should’ve been spent speaking about the Land Cruiser.
It kind of makes sense to cover the plate.
It's way easier to browse the web and see potential vehicles (especially with a phone number associated in the sale) to steal/for parts.
It's very common that enduro/motocross bikes to get stolen when they are up for sale.
I have an early 2007 fj that was actually made in 2006. The biggest issue with increasing the tire size is the frame protrudes into the wheel well a little so you have to cut it if you go up in size more than just a little. Mine has 194,000 and is still very reliable. Skid plates are junk already tore one off. 16mpg around town. Rear diff lock has come in handy. Engine is very torquey. Transmission is great, change the fluid. Rides great for what it is. Suicide doors are sometimes a pain but they are better than a two door. Blind spots but you'll get use to them. Fun capable vehicle that is unique and very reliable.
Fun truck but visibility sucks for a daily driver.
Hi there, the closest Toyota 4X4 to a 2 door Jeep is the 2 door Prado or 2 door 70 Series. 😁😁

My 2010 FJ Cruiser has heated seats and a sunroof, both options were dealer installed. It is a luxury vehicle compared to my 2001 Tacoma regular cab.

Our COFJ club will be doing an informal Ouray event this year (July 17-24) and then creating a formal event next year. We meet every day at the Ouray Visitor's Center at 9AM then we all figure out what trails we're doing.
As far as the frame rust issues go, My 2007 has surface rust at most and it's lived all its life, 300,000km in Saskatchewan on salty, gravel roads. The previous owner undercoated it annually and took pretty good care of it. That's the type of older high mileage FJ people should be looking for. Get underneath and tap different areas of the frame with a hammer. Surface rust can be stopped/slowed down significantly if treated on time
Have wondered about the supposed rust issue. My '06 Sequoia spent it's first 3 years in New York then 10 years in western North Carolina, yet there is very little rust underneath.
We service one of these for a gentleman who was on call during Hurricane Sandy. Too this day we are still doing repairs caused by the saltwater rescues. He will never get rid of it. Job security ten fold 👍.
Yes, any too good to be true price on an FJ with reasonable mileage is probably because the frame and everything made of metal when looking under the car is disintegrating in front of your eyes. Watch out for recent paint/coating of the undercarriage to fool the unwary about the rust condition. Be wary about a FJ being sold in FL or TX or AZ or CA that lived 90% of it's life in the rust belt and was brought to a Non-Rust State to sell hoping to catch the uninformed. CarFax shows where the vehicle was registered and probably has lived during it's lifetime.

The 4Runner and FJ are really underpowered they definitely need to be re-geared if you mod them. The GX has a much better powertrain, V8 with full time 4wd.
When I was in the market for the 4Runner, that was the main reason for not buying - it had an inadequate powertrain, and then I shifted my focus on the GX, but I could not swallow the ugly front of the new GX.
The GX is also underpowered for a V8. 301 hp and 329 torque. The Ford v8 is 460 hp 420 torque. I keep looking at the GX but too fuel efficient for those low numbers.
We bought a new 4Runner but did consider a GX. I liked the full time 4WD but the V8 and the fact that it required premium killed it for us. The 4Runner by no means is gas friendly but I would have spent more on the GX.

I have a 2020 LC with 8K miles and plan on keeping it for a very long time....I also have a 2022 4Runner TRD ORP that is outstanding...This was a great video and I wish they would have talked less on the FJ and more on the 4Runner and LC
Boulder Larry Miller still does make their own TRD Pro. Can see it on their site
07-09 FJs are base on the 4th gen 4Runner platform while the 10-14 FJs are based on the 5th gen 4runners so not all suspension parts are interchangeable
That's correct, the most notable issue is that the front lower suspension mounts are smaller on the '07-'09. We've had plenty of people on FJCruiserForums upgrade from '07's to '10+'s and find that some parts don't swap right over.
My 4Runner TRD OR has a Magnuson supercharger, and works like factory!... TRD and Magnuson developed the supercharge together and were originally going to use it on a TRD Pro trim, but Toyota changed their minds about an SS Pro, at the last second and allowed Magnuson to released it as an aftermarket offering with the knowledge that it was co-development by TRD... Where Toyota helped develop it, it compliments the engine, and doesn't void any warranties (is installed professionally... It causes NO extra wear and tear.. My 4Runner is as reliable as ever, and being a trust fund baby, use it to overland, all year and I have put THOUSANDS of miles on it with the ss installed.. When I'm getting it serviced, the guys at Toyota are always so excited to see someone actually using the Magnuson supercharger in a 4Runner!.... I love Roman, but he was wrong about losing reliability with a supercharger.. Not true if you get a Magnuson Supercharger.. Toyota co-developed it to compliment the 4 liter in the 4Runner.... I HIGHLY recommend it!!!.. I did mine in 2019 and still going strong!
I'm waiting for magnuson to break the 2020+ 4runner ecu so I can get a supercharger. They sure are taking their sweet time

Atrac was available on the 07. The hack is if your FJ has a rear diff lock but no Atrac. All you need to do is add the button. If the FJ was built from 11-06 and later the metallurgy problem was fixed with the rear ring and pinion. Besides its 15 years old. Most likely even if you had an earlier one it has already been replaced anyway. Nothing wrong with the 07 FJs. I get 20 mpg mixed driving every tank.
I thought the best FJ option was the dealer-installed nav system that went into the dash-top cubby. It was a garmin hand held GPS that plugged into this dash slot and had its own speaker. By 2008 standards it was pretty forward thinking. Unfortunately mine is broken so the damn door doesn't lift anymore. Could probably be fixed.
That was a gimmick Garmin unit that Toyota sold for like a year, I've personally never even seen one 🙂and it was pretty dated even when new.
I'll never sell my FJ.

I was fortunate enough to buy my 02 Trd Sr5 4wd, v8 AC Tundra optioned w/ Locker, for $4,800 bucks 4yrs ago.
IMO - The perfect size fullsize.
I run 16" wheels 33" Dura-tracs, w/ 2886 OME Coils, ARB Steel out front.

how it is currently no point of paying low 30s for a used toyota half a decade old when you can pay mid 30s for a new toyota for same model & trim for example the tacoma sr 4x4 v6 double cab auto is 32k used 2015 & 36k new at my local dealer
Adjusting suspension isn't that big of a deal for a good shop. Make sure your spring rate can handle the winch and it's not a big deal
Duratrac a great aggressive tire, but not the first with that type of MT+AT. The old Cooper ST took the same approach probably a decade earlier. It's been replaced by the ST Maxx which is probably what he's thinking of in the video. The old KO was a horrible tire for anything harder than a dry dirt road, blew my mind so many people raved about them. Bad in mud, bad in snow deep, packed, or icy. I got good at using a shovel. So many other ATs at the time were better.

Well there is obviously the GRJ71 on some markets but even on the same platform than the FJC there is the 2-door Prado (**J155) that has a shorter wheel base than the FJC.

120 is just an older generation and 125 the 2-door version also.
In Europe the 2-doors Prado are very common as their size is more on par with a regular European auto.
I know you keep saying go Off-road then Mod it with 3 inch lift and 285 tires which are 32.7 inch tall. Where with a TRD Pro you can just replace tires to 275 which are 32.2 inch tires
Now is 1/2 inch that big of deal ? Which only gives you 1/4 inch more ground clearance.
Now every day what is the modded 4Runner on 285 vs a TRD Pro with 275 for MGP and is there any place one will go the other will not ? Thanks. Great Talk
1/2 an inch is huge. 1/4 of an inch more is great.
The one that is lifted more will scrape less, ride better, and get stuck less.
The issue with the TRD Pro here in Colorado is that (when times are normal) the dealers get full price for them. When I paid $37K (before TTL) for the 4Runner in the picture, TRD Pro 4Runner MSRP was up around $47-48K. I put $11K of wheels/tires/armor/bumper/winch and ended up with a better build for about the same price.
Wescott Designs makes spacers for the 4 4runner trdpro. You can fit 285s no rub, no other mod needed.

It’s a fantastic over landing vehicle. Bigger than a 4Runner but not bigger that a Tahoe.

I agree with you. I think they tend to focus on more "off road" capable vehicles as opposed to great overloading platforms. I'd probably get an older Sequoia and lift it, AT Tires, Skid plates but the mileage and weight are so bad I just can't go down that road as my single car daily driver.

I have an 05 Sequoia. 2.5 inch lift. 33’s and we go camping all the time. People are shocked when they see the sequoia coming down the trail.

In Costa Rica a new one costs about 70k. I guess you could import it to the US but we would be talking about 90k for a new one?

Sorry, we kept getting sidetracked 🙂 the GX of either generation is basically a V8 4Runner. Same wheelbase, frame, a lot of the same mods bolt right on. The main benefit to the GX is depreciation, if you search nationally you can find them 2016+ under ~$40K with very very low miles. They end up cheaper than a 4Runner after just a few years and are objectively a much nicer vehicle to be in. The cosmetic mods -- bumpers etc -- are a bit more $$$ just due to the size of the market.
FYI section 3A of the FJ Buy/Sell guide I wrote is "you should probably be looking at a Lexus GX instead". It is still the bargain of the body-on-frame Toyota offroading world. If you're on the fence, get one.

@@AA-vr8ez I'm hearing from a few Toyota technician friends that the 3.5L TT V6 powertrain is the most complex to come out of Toyota in a long time (this doesn't include the new +hybrid version optional in the Tundra). And that training on the same 3.5L TT V6 powertrain in the new Tundra involves engine internals that they've never been taught before. The LS500 sedan has had this engine for a few years now, to supposedly work out the bugs. Whatever bugs haven't been worked out will become very apparent with the Tundra's production numbers.
Roman graciously let me drive his Tundra the day we shot this podcast, as with the TT V6 in the Bronco I loved the powertrain. NA'd engines at elevation up here feel gaspy, the engine in my 4Runner is a notch or two below "adequate" up here. The Tundra's didn't feel like a V6 at all.
I had a 1st-year LS460 years ago, and even with Toyota/Lexus being a long time industry leader for reliability it had a lot of small issues here and there. I'd give Toyota 2-3 years with this powerplant and then the LX600's various interior bits to work out those bugs.
The common model for people buying LX's to wheel is to get them a few years old and heavily depreciated. If you're buying one new to wheel it, you likely have an income but puts you above such small concerns 🙂. If you plan on buying one used, you have enough time to watch the early LX have issues (or not) then figure out which year is best to buy.
Reading the brochures, my favorite potential offroad upgrade of this next generation is the electronic KDSS (e-KDSS). I never liked the hydraulic version, especially on the 4Runner. It was added in 2014 as an afterthought, the hydraulic lines famously run under the driver side frame rail just behind the driver front tire, right where you'd drop off a rock. At least on the 200, it runs on the inner frame surface. e-KDSS fixes the risk of damage to the hydraulic lines completely. I opted against KDSS on my '18 4Runner, barring any issues with the next generation of trucks with e-KDSS I will likely get it.
The fj is like a hummer, and the Willis jeep is a good choice

I’d disagree a bit on the 4Runner sweet spot. I think the SR5 is a far better option, especially if you’re changing the suspension.

They don't offer the Toyota Hilux in the US because it is built in Japan and there is something called the "Chicken Tax" which is a 25% tariff tax on a list of imported goods.
Hilux is slow North America wants flying vehicle, thats we have the tacoma version here atleast bigger and more power than tthe hilux
I don't think the land cruiser is coming back soon, they'll double down on the sequoia TRD pro

I've put more people on cheap southwest flights out of Colorado to buy FJ's than I can count. A good friend was looking at a 2010 manual with 90K miles, in Colorado the truck was $29K. He flew to Virginia and paid $21K for the same year/miles truck.
He drove it home in a weekend, I think he bought 4-5 tanks of gas. Plane ticket ~$400, tank of gas $50 each compared to $8000 savings. That's the context of calling gas "relatively cheap", as compared to saving thousands over buying these vehicles in Denver.
1st Gen Sequoia? You can still buy them for a fair price, a little more room than a 4runner, million mile 4.7l V8 engines, all parts interchange with different Toyota models. You can build an incredible overlander. Everyone seems to be overlooking them.

@@GMCJay_lly If you're using the word "slow" to talk about Toyota offroaders, then you're kind of missing the point. They're all slow. 1st gen Sequoia's are a few hundred pounds heavier than a 5th gen 4runner with significantly more interior space but lighter than a 100 series landcruiser. Not to mention you can still find deals on them. It's a good space.
They are huge. A lot of trails are skinny boi old jeep trails. The width of the 4runner/tacoma/FJ is perfect for such trails. Anything wider and you're gonna scrape. A lot.

I have no doubt that electric vehicles will eventually be as modable as current gas cars. The reason gas vehicles are easier to mod is because we've had them for over 100 years, and you can buy them everywhere. Modern electric vehicles are relatively new. Once they become more prevalent, they'll be the same. When we reach a point where rural properties have 5 electric vehicles parked out in the pasture, instead of 5 gas/diesel pickup trucks, you'll know we've reached that stage.

These FJ value videos aren't aging all that well. Mid February 2024 now, and FJ's have absolutely plummeted in value. I'd be pissed if I paid 40+ for one last year.

I personally believe that a lightly used / heavily depreciated GX is the best value'd Toyota you can buy for offroading right now. Section 3A of the buy/sell guide for FJ's (I wrote it) is "you should probably be looking at a Lexus GX instead".
Beyond seeing a ton of them built for wheeling in person, I'm not as much of a technical expert on them.
Had to wade through over an hour of this only to find there's ZERO on the Tundra in this video. Despite its title!!

Almost anyone can afford one of these vehicles with the bank's money. Toyota knows their shit will get thrashed offroad, a unibody truck wont work for them. Regulations make shit expensive. If you want cheap cars again, get rid of the excessive regulations. A base model car does not need thousands of electronics in safety sensors.
