The Olympus equivalent to smaller Panasonic cameras with incredible video features is the E-P7. Much better than GX85 or GX9. Great IBIS, no crop in 4K, in-camera color grading, 20MP sensor, the white model never overheats. Higher datarate in 1080 than any of the smaller Panasonic cameras.

I have some thoughts about your issues! Issue 1: should be resolved with the new 9mm f1.8! Issue 2: I actually REALLY love the look of NATURAL with contrast down a notch and sharpness down all the way! Issue 3: Mostly resolved with the E-M5 Mkiii but it is expensive for sure... but would be cheaper to get another EM1 mkii. Issue 4: OM-1 sound is way better... still the crappy menu structure.
Lastly thoughts on Panasonic... There are rumors that the GH6 is due for a massive massive firmware update in the next year or so. It will potentially unlock features we've never seen before on Panasonic and they are also very much aware of the lack of good AF for video is an issue. I think if we are patient... we will see solid AF eventually on panny.
I have had the OM-1 for about a week now and I must say... most of my issues with the older EM1 mkii and mkiii are pretty much resolved. I LOVE having 4k 10bit in-camera... autofocus is even better... and the EVF is finally AMAZING! The image has more dynamic range and is cleaner in low light. It's pretty amazing! You should come over and try it out!

Dang! Two of my favorites on YT talking about my favorite camera brand! Looking forward to this episode! Hoping this comes to fruition Also, a quick possible fix regarding you issue on IBIS @NigelBarros I have found that Olympus firmware 3.3 and 3.4 doesn't have the best IBIS for some reason. You can downgrade the firmware back to 3.1/3.2 (3.2 is where I have mine set at) which has a bit better IBIS. Also definitely agree with @Dave Maze regarding Natural with contrast and sharpness turned down! Another thing you can consider is the Olympus E-M5 Mark II (two) which actually has the exact same sensor as the GH3 but has IBIS. It even has the same codec that is in the GH3 as well. It also has FLAT picture profile. I believe this is the last model that Olympus and Panasonic actually did share a lot of the same stuff on before Olympus moved onto Sony sensors when the E-M1 Mark II was introduced so Panasonic lenses actually work just as well on the E-M5 Mark II. I know some of the Panasonic lenses actually are worse on the newer Olympus bodies...hope this helps!

Nigel, a very humbling review there and thank you for sharing your experiences. It's because of your reviews that I have considered acquiring an Olympus EM1 Mark II. I've been on the fence for a while now. In my honest opinion, I believe you will come back to the Lumix line of cameras eventually....I'm not sure why, how or when, it's a feeling I've actually had months ago. Having watched most of your videos for a number of years, you were able to work hard at getting that certain mojo and the best image out of your GH3. The price for one of these is unbelievable now. I currently have a Lumix GH4, however, I've also owned a GH1, GH2, GH3, G6, G7, G85, NX1 and NX500 cameras. I'm not convinced the Olympus EM1 Mark II is for me though. Funny thing is, I'm going all the way back to the GH1 and GH2 cameras myself. I think it's because of these limitations, I want to get to know these cameras so well that I can pull something special out of them. Your GH3 footage in most respects, is the best I've seen, even compared with the EM1 Mark II. I've been guilty of jumping from one body to another when all I really needed to do is learn more about the craft of creating, rather than expecting the camera to magically create something for me. While these early cameras don't have the best dynamic range, inbuilt stabilisation and many other features current models offer, I appreciate the workflow required to get the best out of the older bodies....including the GH3. The hacks/patches, unique colour science and the amazing prices for these older bodies make them so alluring. I recently came across this from the GH1 (not mine): ua-cam.com/video/bd8ea1Vk6RY/v-deo.html. No image stabilization and a great looking image. It just has that raw mojo to it. I know you reviewed this camera previously. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos in future. Best wishes Nigel!

For "consistent sound" from one camera to another, I use a Shure Lenshopper VP83F. This is a mono super-cardiod mic / pre-amp / recorder that can be used essentially "free-standing" in the hot shoe. It has its own headphone out and level indicating screen. I set up the in camera recorder as best as I can and then ignore it and concentrate on getting good sound recorded in the Shure (and good video in the camera). If the in-camera sound turns out good enough (yes, it can in some cases, particularly if you use a Sony a6400, which has a properly designed mic system), then I can just keep the extra sound file anyway. If not, then I can use the Shure to enhance or completely replace the in-camera sound. There are other "one-piece" mic / pre-amp / recorders around too. I just happen to have (and like) the Shure.

I always found Olympus Cameras to be in kind of a weird spot. They aren't as video-focused as a GH5/s/II (e.g they lack 4k50/60fps for slowmo) but also aren't pure stills cameras. I'm personally not really convinced about the advantages. But as they say: The best camera is the one that you have on hand.
I'd love to see a video about the Lumix DC-BGH1 on this channel. Also MFT and basically a GH5s in a more cinema-camera-like body with some extra features.

I was looking to buy the EM-1 m2 to replace the GX85 but now I'm not sure. I don't care about a little crop, I can make a step back to frame the shot, but the very low bitrate is was I don't like. And the AFC in 4K. Although I solve the AFC problem by switching to 1080 for specific shots where I really need continuous autofocus. I saw a post that you can bump up the bitrate on GX9 but it doesn't seem to work well on GX80/85.

There is a 200€ micro four thirds camera by YI called the Yi M1. It shoots DCI 4k and 2k at 30fps, 1080p upto 60fps, has IMX269 sensor, is super compact, has a port to charge while recording , doesn’t have the best video features but is still one of the cheapest/entry level 4k 30p cameras. This camera was bashed by most youtubers on launch , since then it received firmware updates but no big youtuber made a follow up video. Of everyone I’ve ever come across you have pushed the boundaries of making videos on a budget camera the most. It’d be really interesting to see what you can get out of a camera like yi m1. That closing statement made me want you to try this one out as a challenge. If anything, it could always be a great timelapse camera you can leave out without worrying about it getting stolen. After all you’ve got plenty of mft lenses. Anyways great video as always.

You'd think that, but making youtube videos for a living having a camera with usable autofocus was something that I made more of a priority. The S5 pulses a lot and often time lost my face if anything else had more contrast in it within the scene. In my opinion, having a great codec, bit depth and overall image quality doesn't mean much if the image is out of focus, and for me being a one-man band UA-camr, reliable AF is my main priority after pricepoint. Agree that there seems to be a "hole" here with e.g. GH5ii (which I do not have) and G9 (which I very very recently bought). The reviews I have seen on YT about the G9 updated to most recent firmware suggest that we should abandon Panasonic's reputation for poor autofocus. DPReview says if you up the shutter speed and framerate on more recent Lumix cameras this gives the processor more info faster which (?) eliminates the autofocus problems and pulsing. Since I just so recently got the G9 cannot say and have not had time to use for video just stills (where I can see the G9 is much different/faster than the G85 focus for stills).
