I have focal seizures and sometimes you can be right back to normal right after. Though often time I do need to sit down and sort of 'reboot' or just sleep. Not all are the same. Sometimes it messes with my speech afterward and sometimes just my mood.. Try not to trash the video if you have never experienced (not witnessed) them first-hand. As an educational clip, it is very insightful for the uninitiated.

Mine sound like they are very similar to yours. I can wake up from sleep in a panic. I get them usually when I'm sitting or asleep, and can generally tell if I'm going to get them based on how I feel during the day. The strange thing about mine is that I have to stand up, move, and get water. For some reason, water breaks them fast. My neurologist said that's really strange, but I directed her to a study that was performed. It's called Peri-ictal water drinking (PIWD).
I've also noticed that my seizures are more likely to happen after eating, or eating right before bed. I thought maybe it had something to do with glucose, but during one seizure I was aware enough to test my glucose level right after the focal seizure stopped. My glucose level was within normal range.
I'm allowed to drive, because I have Tonic-Clonics only when I sleep - and luckily haven't have them for years (medications are effective for now). The focal ones, I'm pretty well aware during them and they seem to only last for about 20-30 seconds. My primary care provider can't understand how epileptics are allowed to drive.
I'm sure you know how frustrating it is having to deal with people who can't understand a disability if it's not physically apparent. So aggravating. Employers always request my medical records for verification, because I'm not missing a hand or a leg or something.

As an epileptic myself and a volunteer for the epilepsy foundation shes having whats called a complex partial. This is the type that causes what he mentioned in the video. Many focals like mine do not cause this and there is no first aid for them other then to wait. Consciousness remains in tact and focals can occur in clusters which usually aren't medical emergencies. The type she had in the video is more likely to go into a full blown seizure so be mentally prepared

I had one at work yesterday as I could not speak or respond. All I could do was look at my coworkers and cry. I so desperatly wanted to tell them what was going on, as I could hear in my head what it was that I wanted to say but it came out as jibberish. I sat down for about a half hour and I think I told someone I needed to go home and sleep. I drove home with moments of navigation lapses and don't remember some of my short drive: I know: really stupid but I could not speak so I procceded home and I was sort of pacing around. I managed to make myself some lunch and put my things back in unusual places and found them after I woke up from my 2 hour nap. I felt fine after that like nothing had happened. This was the first one I had during the middle of the day as most have happened at night.
I have the best work crew ever as they are so reassuring and kind to me.

The Drs didn’t believe me so they did many EEG tests and made me have seizures then said a colour or a sentence and made me repeat it, I got 100%. I don't understand why we never seemed to learn much about this stuff in school... I think every child in primary school should be educated on autism, ADHD, epilepsy, Tourettes. You're never too young to experience a challenging situation involving any of these things and it would likely help children with these disorders feel less alienated. I don't know, maybe things have changed since I left school.

I am pretty sure that the person who just comes out from the focal seizure doesn’t act normal as fast as shown in this video. My girlfriend has this and I have to calm her down for minutes. Usually after the seizure, she is confused, disoriented, doesn’t respond at all and her head feels heavy. The most common symptoms for
Focal impaired awareness seizures is movement of mouth like chewing, automatic movements of body and unusual speech. She also doesn’t remember anything for like a minute or so. I usually see these symptoms in her and I always make sure nothing harmful object is near her. I usually hug her to calm her down. That way I can make sure she is nowhere near danger. It’s kinda hurtful to see someone going through that 😔.

What annoys me is that what I experience seems completely different to everything I've seen/read about focal seizures. Recently, it's been like psychological torture/bullying, where I'm forced to think certain things, and I'd create an alternate reality in my head with memories, and deja vu of those memories. Worlds are created and changed in the blink of an eye.
I'd stop/slow down what I'm doing, not because I don't know where I am or anything. I just think "oh my god, this is crazy" while being bombarded with 5000000 thoughts every split second.
It's more like a panic attack, and what helps for me is just talking to someone. Not have them ask me if I was alright, but just try and pull my mind away from the trippiness in my mind.

My first few months of experiencing focal seizures back in 2021 seem similar to the ones you described "bombarded with 5000000 thoughts every split second". I recall trying to describe it as a sort of projector 📽️ rapidly flicking through all these different "slides" with different thoughts and sensations of deja vú. Three years on, and my focal seizures are still a near daily occurrence unfortunately. However, they're now in the form of the more common symptoms as pointed out in the video as well as gastrointestinal pain and just the general feeling/anticipation of losing consciousness any second every time it hits me. Thankfully... so far... I haven't lost consciousness during these episodes and hope I continue to 😅

Also to add, some people are not diagnosed with epilepsy yet. After recovering from the seizure, make sure they are ok and aware that they had a seizure and may have epilepsy or need extra medication. It may take 20 minutes to recover from a seizure and they may not fully remember it afterwards. In some cases they may be confused or impaired immediately after a seizure.

I lived in the fear of feeling like that again… then two months later I got a panic attack which triggered this episode that took me to that same feeling. People would start talking to me andI wouldn’t understand stand, everything was spiraling out of control, my legs felt like they were going to give out, I felt like I was going to collapse and was rushed over with anxiety. I couldn’t form full sentences and would just end up getting distracted and slurring words. My dad told me I seemed drunk. I was rushed to the ER. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong they all thought I was on drugs and tested me for drugs. I was in this episode for 6 hours… I thought I was going to be stuck forever. They gave me a pill and I was able to get out of it at last. Ever since I’ve been having extreme dejavús and headaches, I’ve also been twitching weirdly. Flooded thinking I have a brain tumor or something catastrophic. I don’t know if this is what it is… how do you get tested? What kind of doctor tests you?

This sounds like an unpleasant experience.

There are a number of medical conditions that can cause symptoms similar to epilepsy. So if you want to find out what your symptoms are, it would be best to get a medical diagnosis.
If the doctors thinks it could be epilepsy, we have information on epilepsy and how epilepsy is diagnosed. This is relevant to the UK. It may be different in other countries.
      www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/about

I don't have them very often but they can last for hours but are really unnoticeable. I just act really out of it. Not many people know I have them because of how little they happen. In fact I am struggling to get diagnosed because people don't recognise it when they see it.

I can feel it coming in my head, like a pressure feeling , so
I relax, and prepare myself to loose control over my body, I lie or sit down otherwise am going to fall, it feels as if am drawing back into my self, i feel like am in the Center of my head while it becomes dark around me. It takes all my energy away while its happening. I feel panicky and scared.
I can feel it in my head at first it’s like a some sort of pressure coming down and consuming me. My brain starts to shut of and I am very sleepy . I get very sleepy and tired when it’s happening. My head falls down to side when am laying down or forward if am sitting up straight, and my eyes close
I start saying prayers in my head because I get anxious.
I can hear things happening around me so am conscious but at the same time I am detached. I can’t talk while it’s happening nor can I respond to anyone or move my body, my body feels limp and weak.. i get a rising feeling in my stomach like when you are in a roller coaster and it’s going down fast, also i get this feeling of nauseousness in my stomach. I start to swallow a lot during it and for abit more after it. It last for about minute and a half max or 15 secs minimum, then I come back again slowly to myself. I feel weak and tired after it.
I feel fine 10 minutes later
When it’s for 15 sec or so less symptoms present themselves and when it longer like a min or so then all the symptoms show.
    Or
Annabelle Lande what is witnessed exactly if you you don’t mind sharing hun x
This is what I experience below
I get a warning that it’s going to happen, the warning feels like am going to blackout.
some sort of sensation comes down from my brain and consumes my head and body.
    It’s very hard to explain
I get a feeling of extreme dread and fear.
I have started to relax now, and prepare myself to loose control over my body, so I lie or sit down, when it is happening.
    (My last one I didn’t have a warning )
The next stage feels as if am drawing back into myself as if am fainting, while my eyes become dark so I close them. Am still aware of what’s happening, I dont loose consciousness. This experience takes all my energy away.
My brain starts to shut of and I get very sleepy and beyond exhausted while it’s happening and afterwards aswell.
My head falls down to side.
I tell my self to be calm and that it will be over soon (in my head) I feel very anxious and fearful during it, a feeling like am about to die. I get a feeling like when your stomach drop when you are on a really fast rollercoaster going downward. It’s aaccompanied with a feeling of nausea.
I start to swallow rapidly during the episode and also a while after it has finished.
I can’t talk while it’s happening nor can I respond to anyone or move my body, and I don’t have the ability to snap out of it
my body feels limp and weak I can’t lift my arms or legs and I can only stare blankly. I don’t have control over my body so
I have to let it run its cause.
As am going more and more into this state, any noises, eg tv, any small talk, cars, radio or whatever else quietens down and for split second I dont hear anything at all but before long they start to pick up the volume again as am coming back to myself.
It lasts for about minute max and 30 secs min
I am aware of everything happening from start to finish
I come back again slowly to my normal self. I feel weak, sleepy and tired after it.

Thank you for your comment. The relationship between multiple sclerosis (MS) and epilepsy is not well understood, but some research does suggest there is a link. But more research is needed. People diagnosed with MS often have other medical conditions, which may include epilepsy.

It may be a good idea to speak to the doctor as they can give individual medical advice.

    • @epilepsyaction

Hi, that's a really useful question to ask.
Usually, if a focal seizure is going to develop into a seizure where someone becomes unconscious, this would happen very quickly, and you wouldn't usually notice the focal seizure itself. You might find our information about different types of seizures, which explains more about this helpful to read: www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures
Carrying a medical ID can also be useful to explain what happens during a seizure and how to help: www.epilepsy.org.uk/living/safety-equipment/medical-id-products

As long as I've been alive, every now and then I've had this weird thing I would do and it's only recently occurred to me that it could be some kind of seizure. I'll be lying in bed, relaxed and with my eyes closed but not yet asleep. All the sudden I'll either get a weightless kind of feeling like I'm dropping feet first through an endless tunnel or a choppy feeling like the whole room is shaking back and forth quickly. This sense of shaking and dropping and movement and weightlessness is accompanied by a feeling I can only describe as a full-body high with like a light-headedness and tingle up my spine and a sense of euphoria for no reason. I know absolutely nothing about seizures, but can they only be had at night? I've never had this during the day. Also, I'm able to "wake up" whenever I want out of it and open my eyes and move around. It feels like pure ecstasy until I get this creepy feeling like it's about to "take over" and I get scared and move around to get rid of it.

So sometimes I tend to "zone out." One time I remember being in chemistry lab. I was standing at the front of the room, near the whiteboard and a friend of mine from across the room started waving her hands frantically at me until I noticed her. I have no idea how long I was standing there or why I was standing there in the first place. I don't even remember thinking about anything while I was zoned out. I was quite confused afterwards, but it didn't seem like anyone else noticed except her. I work with birds now and their random sounds seem to keep me from zoning out as often, but sometimes I just feel like my body and brain just disconnect. Also, I have always had the tendency to drop things. It just feels like my hand lets go for no reason. Any ideas?

      Hi Jackie

Thank you for your comment. This sounds like a confusing experience.

If you have a diagnosis of epilepsy, if you haven’t already, you may wish to talk to your epilepsy specialist regarding your concerns. If you don't have a diagnosis, you need to get a medical diagnosis or explanation of what is happening. You would have to talk to your GP. If they think you’ve had an epileptic seizure, they should arrange an appointment for you with an epilepsy specialist. We have information on how epilepsy is diagnosed that you may find helpful. www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/diagnosis

As trained epilepsy advisers, we can give general information on epilepsy. But we’re not able to diagnose your symptoms. If your symptoms are related to epilepsy, it could be some type of focal seizure. www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures/focal-partial
In these seizures the epileptic activity starts in just a part of your brain. You may remain alert during this type of seizure, or you may not be aware of what is happening around you. You may have movements that you can’t control, or unusual sensations or feelings.

Keeping a diary of these events could be helpful for your doctor. www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/diagnosis/seizure-diary

If you would like further information or to discuss this further, please contact our helpline team directly. You can either email helpline@epilepsy.org.uk or phone the Epilepsy Action Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. Actually I’m aware when all this happens so i can save myself.

    • @epilepsyaction
      @epilepsyaction  Рік тому

Hi @oldbag3043 This sounds like an unpleasant experience.

Following a tonic-clonic seizure (www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures/tonic-clonic) either in your sleep or a wake, you can experience tiredness, confusion and memory problems (www.epilepsy.org.uk/living/health/memory-problems-and-epilepsy). How quickly you recover will be individual to you. But it can take weeks. As these symptoms are related to you having seizures, the best way to treat them is to try stop the seizures happening.

Are you being seen by an epilepsy specialist so they can review your treatment (www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/treatment/anti-epileptic-drug-treatment)and look at other possible reasons for your seizures to still be happening? They may suggest altering the dosage of your epilepsy medicine or trying a different one if you are already on a high dosage. If you has tried various types of epilepsy medicines, it may be the specialist could look into other treatment options for you.
If you are not under a specialist, you will need to ask your family doctor to refer you. This would usually be to a neurologist. The ideal would be to someone with a specialist interest in epilepsy, as there are many different neurological conditions, and neurologists tend to specialise in different ones.

I wonder if you have an epilepsy nurse you can also contact.

You can talk to your epilepsy team about your vacant episodes and the ringing in your ear. Otherwise talk to your GP about the ring in the ear.

If we can be of any more help, please feel free to contact us again, either by email, live chat or the Epilepsy Action Helpline (www.epilepsy.org.uk/support-for-you/the-epilepsy-action-helpline) freephone 0808 800 5050. There are different treatments for epilepsy. How effective they are varies depending on the type of treatment and how someone is effected by their epilepsy. The usual treatment for epilepsy is taking medicine. This doesn't cure epilepsy, but aims to stop or reduce your seizures. Around 7 in 10 people will stop having seizures with the right epilepsy medicine. We have more information about the different treatments for epilepsy on our website www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/treatment/getting-right-treatment-care-for-epilepsy.

If someone is having focal seizure than at that time (after 2~3 minutes) he remembers everything that he did in this 2~3 minutes. Or not?

I've finally found out I have focal awareness seizures, I describe it as like a special lens on your camera , I know I'm in the world but can't make sense of it, if people try to restrain, talk with me they seem like horrid monsters and I go into fight or flight. However, even nurses and doctors don't understand it, I've had bad fights with them. I can "black out" but still go on walking, working etc, I've often finished up in odd places with no idea how I got there, bought things. Epilepsy is a very strange thing in the way it happens different from one person to another. The only first aid for any seizure is take away anything dangerous around them then stand back and let the seizure continue until it has finished, then reassure them, they will be badly disoriented

What if you're having something similar to this but your completely aware of where you are and whats happening? On top of also having an aura before hand usually and metallic taste or sensation?....I'm asking for myself. The idiot neurologist i saw nearly two months ago tried writing off my experiences as just being caused by bottled up trauma and told me to go back to therapy.

    • @epilepsyaction
      @epilepsyaction  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Neelie

During a focal aware seizure (www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures/focal-seizures), you stay fully aware of what’s happening around you, even if you can’t move or respond. This type of seizure used to be called a simple partial seizure. An aura is in fact the seizure starting in a single part of the brain as a focal aware seizure.

It may help to keep a diary of these events and try video some of them to share with your neurologist.

If we can be of any more help, please feel free to contact us again, either by email or the Epilepsy Action Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. Our helpline is open Monday to Friday 8.30am until 5.00pm and Saturday 10.00am until 4.00pm. www.epilepsy.org.uk/support-for-you/the-epilepsy-action-helpline

@@epilepsyaction I saw a Neurologist the first of Sept for the first time in my life. She was not helpful. She barely looked at my chart, didn't look at the journal I use to keep and basically said with out saying it directly, that it's all in my head. LMAO Which that is exactly the problem, it Is all in my head *rolls eyes*
Wasted half a tank of gas to get to her office and back home for nothing.
As a teen I would sporatically have these sudden extreme "cold chill" like shaking. these occured Very few and Very far between. Then about ten years ago they happened again only stronger and i could feel them internally like tremors. They stopped after I had my antidepressant changed so I thought that's what caused them.
But two years ago they started again. This time I can feel when ones going to hit. slowly at first, then the aura's got worse and the attacks stronger. i'm sure it is the right side of my brain that this is happening as when they edge in my left hand looses coordination and feels useless. the left side of my face feels sort of numb in just the skin. Then the rest hits.
what gets me is during the day i'll have a headache, just in my forehead on one side or the other. I'll also get a metallic taste/smell and ..this sound strange but with the headache, the headache itself feels metallic like how burning metal smells sort of.
sorry for the novel. i'm just so frustrated. Disability keeps telling me I can "Adjust/Adapt" and now i've been cut down to 3 days a week at work.
