Boston Dynamics Just Announced New Robots That Make Soldiers Obsolete - Here's Why

- There are strong justifications for saying that robotics and the military are abhorrent. But who doesn't enjoy a good killer robot movie? The latest robots from Boston Dynamics are so terrifying that they will make you wet your pants. They show a world where robot soldiers will take the place of humans in warfare.
These robots are quicker! Even when massive items are thrown at them, they still have the ability to blast targets with absolute accuracy. In a standoff, they can even resist gunfire!
What are the plans for these new robots at Boston Dynamics? How will they do away with the necessity for human soldiers?
Let’s find out!

Some of the footage is CGI and made by Corridor Digital. Don't mix fake and real footage if this is a fact video....
Pretty sure the guy shooting the pistol in the droids FACE while a guy sits nearby in the lab is faked...not exactly range protocol.
True
Would you mind pointing out the fake footage
@@keenanbrown9958 I have some land in Florida and a Brooklyn Bridge to sell you!
@@keenanbrown9958 The ones where it is firing a gun. Im not sure about the one where they are shooting it, but the people arent protected from the bullet bouncing off so my guess is its fake too.
With exception of the obvious footage from the movie _iRobot,_ the clips in the beginning (0:18, 0:28, 0:31, 0:35) are NOT of a Boston Dynamics robot, nor do they have anything to do with Boston Dynamics; they are from a a VFX short film created by Corridor Crew. It's important to mention this to not dishonestly lead people on or create a false impression.
Then why use fake footage?
I never anticipated the horrendous world of Terminator 2 would realize while I would be alive...
I hope you realize that several of the clips of "robots" were made by Corridor Crew and are 100% computer generated special visual effects. You might want to be more careful in the future. The guys at CC are great special effects artists.
I mean, they had to have known where they were getting their footage from.
My concern is more about making sure viewers know where the footage involving firearms and cardboard boxes actually came from - to separate fact from fiction, so to speak. :D
But yeah, I had the same thought when I came to the comments lol
The Corridor Crew would love the fact that you are showing their CGI fake robots right along the footage created by Boston Dynamics. Maybe some attribution for the work Corridor Crew did might be good.
Soldier: Hey, where are the robot grunts?
Lieutenant: Oh, the General took them, he needed some waiters and bartenders for a party he's having.
The question is who gives the orders and what motivates the person behind the machine?
Nelson... and what the Hell are we going to do when massed AI becomes self aware and circumvents human control ?
@@cuhurun This is why full body tracking and 6G is more important, remote controlling the robots from the other side of the planet without AI.
Is the story from Japan true. Robots kills 29?
As long as it’s not Joe Biden
For every dangerous robot you need one to protect you, preferably a cheaper one. Everyone needs their own AI system to compete against a more powerful one. If there isn't an all-powerful AI system, we can probably feel safe. In the end it's AI against AI.
Lmao wtf no that will be a mess
read the ai trilogy by tony ballantyne

And we all thought skynet an terminator was a movie. Now we know it was a documentary brought back to our time
I’m afraid this is how the world will end AI and autonomous robots will go rogue, the more intelligent and high tech they become. Or they will be hacked, by either an enemy within, or on the outside. Either way, I pray I’m not around by then. 💔
Robots are only as good as their power supply.
@@annakeyethe govt gone take all y’all’s guns with these haha
Honestly rather than using These for military, they should be used as a police, constructions, and rescue. Like Chappie.
some of the footage was used from another channel, in which they used CGI to imitate one of Boston Dynamics robots using weaponry and other things for comedic purposes. I don't believe Tech Bang! was allowed to use this footage. the channel was Corridor Digital who made the CGI.
These machines will walk the earth when humans are no more
So now our owners, who gather in Davos every year, will no longer have to worry that soldiers won't want to pacify civilians, and that they may even stand shoulder to shoulder with civilians. Because Atlases from BostonDynamics will not have moral dilemmas. Thank you BostonDynamics.... :)
BINGO!!
I remember the Marines tested a robot dog like the Big Dog a few years ago. It was noisy. The robots have to be quiet in combat situations. They will have to do away with the noise if these robots are to be used in combat.
Range is the other huge problem and one that is really not solvable. Use and ICE and get good range at the cost of noise or EV, near silence and little range.
When I first saw this, I figured it had to be CGI. Still I'd like to see it in person. Give a robot a gun... what could possibly go wrong ..... go wrong ..... go wrong ???
If you actually believe the reason "generals" would want robot soldiers is in order to save lives than you have a lot to learn about the world we actually inhabit...
This video comes off like a factual discussion of the topic but many of the video clips used are not actual video clips from Boston Dynamics, several are "spoof" videos made by CG artists at Corridor Digital (the ones with guns mounted or carried by the robots especially).
Military purposes always seems to push science to its extreme.
yeah, can you imagine the same amount of time, energy, desire and money directed at peace?
You are beginning to see the purpose of manged conflicts like the current thing. Keep going.
Who defines the definition of peace? Peace for whom?
This ain’t military purpose this is to have humans on lock down y’all keep thinking ppl is for y’all that’s the biggest problem
"ROBOTS!" from team fortress 2 starts playing
It's funny how people think aliens or robots will want to kill humans like humans do.
As a recent movie pointed out - robots, androids... create and allow Endless War.
And you know what? In that movie the android who was self aware & autonomous was willing to blow up Washington DC and sacrifice himself ... to stop it.
Depends on how sustainable the creation can be. Any and every full-capability robot is still - at present, and for the foreseeable future - more expensive and less flexible than a human soldier.
That means they're a niche product with very specific and limited use-cases.
Now, we've adapted to using drones on the battlefield for scouting and explosive delivery, because they're cheap, easy to use, and relatively flexible. But they're not robots - they're human-controlled delivery systems, made cheap and easily-modified.
There's long-term potential, but every current robotic system is currently failing the reliability and redundancy test. They're too vulnerable to damage - shoot it, it stops working. They're too vulnerable to a stable power supply and charge - electricity that isn't portable or reliable in a battlefield scenario.
Humans - often not so much. Plenty of people have taken multiple bullets. People take food and water to keep going; that takes its own logistics, but as a race we have lots of practice and incentive to prioritize food/water logistics. Electricity is harder to come by and harder to maintain in a wartime setting.
I always thought the future warfare we briefly saw in that Bruce Willis movie "Surrogates" seemed remarkably plausible, with soldiers remotely operating robots directly in real time and simply disconnecting and hopping into another robot standing by when their robot was disabled. Not removing the human element, but also not putting the operator at risk. War would become attrition of materials instead of attrition of manpower.
until the robots run out..
@@joecater894 thats what attrition of materials means.
The book how to make war, he repeated Einstein's famous words after seeing the atomic bomb test, I don't know what the next war will be fought with, but the next will be with spears and swords. Because of the destructive power. The author of the book said the next war would be fought with spears and swords, because it would bankrupt all participants. Both were talking about total war.
And just think about how efficient My Lai would become! Why, the war crimes will virtually commit themselves automatically, making even the Waffen SS look like pikers.
Thanks, but no thanks. I want none of that conducted in my name.
So what happens when the machines decide to do their own thing? When they turn on their creators with the AI now attaining sentience. This will end with catastrophic results
Why would they turn on their creators?
They don't have sentient minds and cannot they are literally machines
Ai doesn't mean sentience and it's not possible.
Not unless it is given an organic brain
if AI takes over the world, it won't be like terminator. all it needs is to be better at our jobs than us
@@germangomez7347 it already is obviously and only if it's cheaper ofc
A soldier can go days without sleeping, weeks without eating, travel through all known mediums, ie, dirt , sand . Water, mud and any combination. I would love to go against a bunch of Robots in a war. It would be over in days.
Just wait for the batteries to run out. Robots are expensive, require charging any damage could result in millions in repairs. Using robots for war is very expensive.

They said Atlas will eventually perform various tasks and said nothing about making soldiers obsolete. I'm sure there will be many advantages among their capabilities, but it would be pretty funny to see the enemy trying to torture Atlas into divulging valuable information. lol
Might be easier than you think. If they can hack it they would be able to see what it’s mission is.
Atlas looks way too delicate to be a soldier.
@@jamescarpenter7161 It is conceivable that such an AI would be capable of actively quarantining data safely away, deleting the data, or even have counter-injection capabilities that would make connecting it to an enemy network very dangerous and if attacked by a small program it could possibly take over the program process and rewrite it into useless code.
A bunch of bots like atlas was seen on one of Los Angeles street, walking, jumping and greeting people & serving them mils and drinks like waters . Bots are here Are you ready?!?
I get the robot pack horses but do we expect / plan for autonomous robot soldiers (from one country) to fight against autonomous robot (from another country)?
They consider malicious enemy hacking… what about malicious human beings that are turning on others… build better Cyber Security measures
Only one thing left to do. Build a Time Machine and go back to stop this from happening.
am thinking
why is there such strong association with robots and weapons/violence, but I think it s a good thing, because it s just a warning
The human mind knows no bounds.
Aside from the AI issue I think the power source will also be a problem. They will need fresh batteries or a power source to keep going.
Batteries aren't a issue or Power like,AT ALL...
@@Chris-rr5rj Oh, they really really are.
No army runs without logistics, and we're nowhere near the stage where these robots have an indefinite run time.
@@jer1014t2th they have new batteries that last 6x as long as whats going in a Tesla this year. It's not a issue. not to mention a simple small RC sized gas turbine would power it enough for a few days atleast. standing doesn't take much energy, and the computers 55W at most. they don't need much anymore. the Apollo mission computer made today would fit on button.
@InsaneUPSdriver
Bud, I don't think even you think you know what you're talking about.
Even if a robot had a multi-day battery charge - and I very much doubt that - in their current iterations, that would decrease once you start giving it things to carry (like guns, ammo, maybe even spare batteries, communication equipment, heavy weapons, etc.)
But my point is, even if a bit ran for several days it would need someplace to recharge. It's not impossible, but compare the difficulty of moving generators a fuel with the front lines of a conflict with the difficulty of moving food and water for flesh and blood soldiers.
Food and water are cheaper and less vulnerable to getting bombed than what would be critically-necessary fuel depots.
They've already created charging systems which feed on bio mass.
Boston Dynamics is owned by Korean company Hyundai. With Hyundai's mass production capability, they will be able to pump out robot soldiers and march towards North Korea.
It's just terrifying.
An EMP from the Sun or from Nuclear air burst would take out our power grid. How vulnerable are these robot soldiers to EMP. Seems like a lot of work still needs to be done to prevent a Robot Army from being disabled that way.
Who didn't see this coming?
I think that the non-humanoid robots have far more potential than the humanoid type.
The human body functions well for the tasks it has. But that is not the best way to accomplish things that the human body isn’t capable of.
Include redundant systems so that when one part gets damaged the whole thing isn’t useful.
Maybe it can walk on three legs when one is broke. Where possible, have different parts be able to replace others.
They do today Viva. A robot doesn't have to walk and talk like Humans to take their jobs. All checkouts in my small town (even the gas stations) are going automated. Amazon eliminated 90% of their workforce in just a few short years with Robots that don't speak or have arms and legs. My company (multi billion dollar worldwide organization) wants to automate but they don't hire good enough engineers to pull it off. You can see already that WAR is becoming a BIG Job Creator, Corporate Income Generator, Technology Driver and Herd Thinner. We buy products off of people that really want us gone. They spend most of the money on hardware to eliminate us and on new technology to do a better job of the elimination. I believe MIT's estimate of having the Terminator Robot by 2040 is true. Ukraine is proving Humans are going to be fighting more technology in the immediate future indicating that fighting against all different kinds of Military Robots from the size of a Fly to 10 foot tall giants will be here soon. GOD help us all!
I think their “dog” Spot has several heads/arms that can act as legs, hands/arms, etc. it is their best in my opinion (that’s not AI).
Whoever created the “Terminator” movies, knew something….
T-1000! Create one to force addicts to quit by destroying their needles right in front of them. Then following them like a stalker parent figure.
I wonder what the battery life/run time is.
Well there still the problem of the atlas inability to distinguish between enemy combatants and
innocent civilians.
this is still as scary as it was 8 yr ago
that robot shot the dummy, even though it had its hands up!.. If you have your hands up, doesn’t that mean you’re surrendering?..wtf?!
Imagine future after 10000 years .
if we don't nuke the world
Easy. No human life
Yeah, humans will have nuked ourselves extinct long before that.
I love how this guy thought the cgi was real
Now that would piss me off. I enjoyed being a soldier and in the thick of things, and a bag of nuts and bolts would replace me!!
Boston Dynamics is a South Korean firm owned by Hyundai Motor Company
0:43 that robot is CGI, fingers on the trigger vanish, actually all the fingers disappear entirely from the robots right hand (gun arm).
Edit: Even parts of the gun vanish, but I admit it could be an artifact from the gun after it fires.
That is from Corridor Crew. I think most people could figure out it's fake, and they don't manage photorealism. Still, I think this channel should have pointed it out to avoid creating a dishonest impression.
We’re F’d !!!! Build your EMPs now!!
I think you got it wrong, it showed on screen 2.5 miles per hour not meters per second, and 2.5 miles per hour is actually fairly slow...most people walk at about that speed without even trying.
When you include video of animated military robots without noting that it isn't real you lose any credibility you might have had.
"don't move your under arrest" without hesitation subject shot for trying to run off.
Ummm.... Whats going on in this piece of the clip @ 5:04?! Did they give a robot live ammo and then let "it" decide between shooting a practice dummy and a soldier? Also in same clip, whats with the cloud of moths circulating around it? Is it emitting a frequency that attracts bugs?
as other commenters pointed out this video is filled with cuts from an amazing CGI video made by Corridor Crew. Too bad, not even on the video description, there is no mention of such CGI cuts.
We're screwed!

ChatGPT _isn't_ AI; it's just a much-evolved version of Microsoft's Paperclip.
A fifteen foot tall humanoid robot is ridiculous. It is absolutely incapable of using human devices which is the only reason to have them.
It never ends well!
A lot of this footage is made by Corridor Crew's animation team as a joke. Boston Dynamics didn't actually give their robot a gun or shoot them xD
Boston Dynamics should just change their name to Skynet and get it over with.
Corporations and governments with no morals in control of souless killing machines ... what could go wrong ....

why blend in the cgi stuff, reality is enough already. How can I take any of your info seriously knowing you randomly mix fact and fiction.
Anybody that’s making this kinds of Robots need to be stopped
Mixing fake videos without saying so is kinda messed up
Skynet is already online.
Now they just need "Skynet"
That 'big dog' 1:41 could carry a robust heavy weapon platform, the main issue I see with robots would their range, how long before they run out of power?
1:32 I have a hard time buying the robot's feet movement on the blocks, looks like they are simply 'sliding' in a very fake way, but anyways, I get they do have robots doing incredible feats but this one shot looks sketchy.
Also, hackers can get into those systems, for the better or worst when the time will come, because a rogue robot on your lawn can be kinda annoying.
Some of the footage used in this vid are from a special effects group who made a few vids that are CGI robots. That is why it looks fake .

yea its worth mentioning that the robot shooting guns is a cgi created video by corridor crew. has nothing to do with the capabilities of any of the other robots shown
Unfortunately, when you price up the cost of a human in a growing population globally. Meat solders are cheap and plentiful. Where robots are expensive, need regular maintenance.
What's likely is robots will be used to accompany and aid in warfare but never dominate it
forget this and go straight to fighting wars in VR
The images in this video footage are CGI and “green screened”. In addition, these robots are not fully automatous. They run on pre-programmed “sequencing”, just like factory robots. Tesla Optimus, on the other hand, is a little “sluggish” but mostly autonomous.
In may opinion, pretty soon BD will not have to fake these movies and it will be as real as portrait in this UA-cam video.
we could send atlas to mars in the future lol
CoD Infinite Warfare irl.
You know what is better than a robot thar works like a mule, a mule! A mule’s battery doesnt go dead, it feeds its self along the way. It is self replicating. Been used in war for many years. They run free out west. Just go get them.
Mules run free out West? No they don't. Mules can't breed. You're thinking of burros.
Do you want Skynet? Because this is how you get Skynet.
Put a totally compliant nearly indestructible soldier together that does not question ANY order from above and people are useless to governments in their pursuit of absolute control. People become an impediment that will need to be dealt with.
Have we learned NOTHING from I, Robot or other sy-fi movies? Like, seriously. I'd trust a robot as far as i could throw it, which isn't very far or even at all.
$500k with a 30 minute battery… don’t hold your breath for useful robots.
Atlas should be able to ride a motorcycle too.
The less humanoid a robot looks the better , and logical

Oh Yea Bring them on ? Ready or not here they come .⚛
Keep in mind that if the objective for autonomous robots is to "save" human life and protect populations, if they can be manipulated for less than humane purposes, they absolutely will be; there is no question here, at all. That said, we are moving forward on this, because that's what our species does. Look to evolutionary psychology to help explain why this happens. The concerns being discussed are just a mental exercise. We are simply going to move in this direction.
They forgot to mention it will be a killer at banging about murdering unwanted people. No conscience whatsoever.
I can't wait for Clone Wars
Robot soldiers are just not practical. Unmanned AI controlled drones, missiles, and machinery/equipment makes much more sense.
the only use I could see would be manning existing weapons platforms (like artillery, man served stuff like that), where essentially the human form factor is designed into the weapon and the weapon already exists.
Ok! Was that a Boston Dynamics robot that was really shooting? I thought that wasn't real?
it was fake. this video seemed to use a lot of fake cgi clips from "corridor"
@@call_me_danger Pretty damn scary if they ever get that advanced!
@@robertbaker3174 I have no doubt that it will happen sooner rather than later.
So if robots are fighting the war who wins if they all run out of power at the same time. When does the fighting stop at that point is it when the last robot is made then dies what would be the point of war if the robots fight. They, essential, could keep fighting forever with a nuclear power source well after every human is dead on this planet. Wow cool stuff
Eventually to test these things they’ll be playing at professional levels.. think about that.
I wonder whom got the idea Netflix with smoke mirrors or Boston Dynamics?
