Blame Flopgate. Look how England were playing before Williams' goal and then after his goal. And then again look at how they played after Palmer's goal. As soon as they scored Flopgate made them play pragmatic. From the start he wanted the game to go to penalties but Spain being Spain didn't allow that. It is the coach's fault, if you have a great striker up front but you only play in your half then your striker literally cannot do anything.

Kane isn’t the issue. He doesn’t get service or play in the same system as he does at Bayern. He arguably had a ballon dor type of season if they had won the CL. Players have other aspects of their game beyond just statistical output and the influence on the game and the impact you have on your team is equally as important as how many goals a player scores and anyone who watches the games would know that. Rodri is a world class CDM and some people say that it’s an insult to the sport if he wins the Ballon Dor since he’s not known as a player who scores a lot of goals. Despite winning more trophies in 2023, Rodri was a better overall player in 2024 and he took his game to another level. Individually, we shouldn’t forget that he had an excellent season at Manchester City whereas a CDM, he had 9 goals and 14 assists 23 G/A in all competitions, playing more like a proper midfielder than a defensive midfielder and he was undefeated in every game he played in the Premier League as every time that they lost a game, he didn’t play as he was suspended. Most of their losses last season came when he didn’t play showing how irreplaceable he is to their team. They wouldn’t have won the league without him especially since Arsenal was challenging them all season and that’s a testament to how good he is and we have to consider a player’s overall team impact in the Ballon Dor race since Manchester City are a much weaker team when Rodri doesn’t play since no one can replicate what he does. Until the FA Cup final against Manchester United, he was undefeated in 74 games even though he lost to Real Madrid and Arsenal. He was incredibly consistent throughout the season. With the Spain national team, he has gone undefeated for his country in over a year and he has won the EUROs as the best player in the tournament and he was a lynchpin at the heart of their midfield even though he got subbed off at half time. He was quiet in their first couple of games, but in the latter stages of the tournament, he scored a wonderful goal against Georgia and produced sublime performances against France and Germany showing up in big games for you country. How much of a role does international football play in the race for the Ballon Dor. Yes Vini and Bellingham had a great season at Real Madrid and were key to their success and helped them win the Champions League, but both of their performances for their respective national teams in major tournaments were average as Brazil was dumped out of the Copa America and Vini was underwhelming, at the EUROs, Bellingham had his moments for England, not only did he lose the final as in that game he got an assist, at times he wasn’t that good, and while Manchester City’s lack of trophies except for the premier league go against him since they didn’t go far in the champions league, Rodri winning the EUROs with Spain as the best player puts him in the mix for the Ballon Dor and international football changes everything in the race to win this award.

Going into the 2026 World Cup, Harry Kane will still be England’s first choice striker. By the time the next major tournament starts, he’ll be 32 and with that age; he has another tournament left in him. As great of a striker he is in terms of his goalscoring record, he has no luck when it comes to trophies and time and time again, he flatters to deceive in big games. For club and country, he has lost 6 finals without scoring a single goal (0 goals and 0 assists in the 2018 World Cup semifinals against Croatia, 2020 and 2024 EUROs finals against Italy and Spain respectively), not to mention that against France in the World Cup quarterfinals, he missed that infamous penalty and sent his kick to space. He has now won Golden Boots at both the EUROs and the World Cup and while that’s great on his personal record that he can score goals, people won’t care because he didn’t win anything. He didn’t really have a great EUROs despite being the joint top scorer and there were calls by many people that he should be dropped in favor of Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins, in games where you expect to step up and produce, he’s being subbed off with 30 minutes to go when his team is chasing a goal in a final as in front of the whole world, he proved that he’s a bottler in big games in that regard because he crumbles whenever the lights are the brightest. If Gareth Southgate is still the England manager by the time the World Cup starts in 2026, Kane will be starting over Toney Watkins Solanke or any other English striker that rises, depending on who their best manager will be and his physical condition that decides whether he’ll keep starting for them and that shouldn’t even be a conversation since regardless of his performances; he’s always going to play.

As of right now for the Ballon Dor, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham have an edge over everyone because Real Madrid won the Champions League, but now that Spain has won the EUROs and he was the best player of the tournament, Rodri is among the contenders to win the Ballon Dor and while he won’t win it, if he manages to win it, I won’t have an issue with that at all.

For me, this award has become too biased towards attackers, as the only thing that people care about is scoring goals and while that’s an indicator of what a player can do as that’s impacting the game for your team, it shouldn’t be the only metric when it comes to determining the best player in the world and it’s the same thing with team trophies as well. Players have other aspects of their game beyond just statistical output and the influence on the game and the impact you have on your team is equally as important as how many goals a player scores and anyone who watches the games would know that. Rodri is a world class CDM and some people say that it’s an insult to the sport if he wins the Ballon Dor since he’s not known as a player who scores a lot of goals. Despite winning more trophies in 2023, Rodri was a better overall player in 2024 and he took his game to another level. Individually, we shouldn’t forget that he had an excellent season at Manchester City whereas a CDM, he had 9 goals and 14 assists 23 G/A in all competitions, playing more like a proper midfielder than a defensive midfielder and he was undefeated in every game he played in the Premier League as every time that they lost a game, he didn’t play as he was suspended. Most of their losses last season came when he didn’t play showing how irreplaceable he is to their team.
They wouldn’t have won the league without him especially since Arsenal was challenging them all season and that’s a testament to how good he is and we have to consider a player’s overall team impact in the Ballon Dor race since Manchester City are a much weaker team when Rodri doesn’t play since no one can replicate what he does. Until the FA Cup final against Manchester United, he was undefeated in 74 games even though he lost to Real Madrid and Arsenal. He was incredibly consistent throughout the season. How much of a role does international football play in the race for the Ballon Dor. Yes Vini and Bellingham had a great season at Real Madrid and were key to their success and helped them win the Champions League, but both of their performances for their respective national teams in major tournaments were average as Brazil was dumped out of the Copa America and Vini was underwhelming, at the EUROs, Bellingham had his moments for England, not only did he lose the final as in that game he got an assist, at times he wasn’t that good, and while Manchester City’s lack of trophies except for the premier league go against him since they didn’t go far in the champions league, Rodri winning the EUROs with Spain as the best player puts him in the mix for the Ballon Dor and international football changes everything in the race to win this award.

He has now won Golden Boots at both the EUROs and the World Cup and while that’s great on his personal record that he can score goals, people won’t care because he didn’t win anything.
He didn’t really have a great EUROs despite being the joint top scorer and there were calls by many people that he should be dropped in favor of Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins, in games where you expect to step up and produce, he’s being subbed off with 30 minutes to go when his team is chasing a goal in a final as in front of the whole world, he proved that he’s a bottler in big games in that regard because he crumbles whenever the lights are the brightest. If Gareth Southgate is still the England manager by the time the World Cup starts in 2026, Kane will be starting over Toney Watkins Solanke or any other English striker that rises, depending on who their best manager will be and his physical condition that decides whether he’ll keep starting for them and that shouldn’t even be a conversation since regardless of his performances; he’s always going to play.

In a season for club and country, achievements in international football should be as important as what you achieve at club level. We shouldn’t discredit a season because of international competitions and I think that’s where recency bias kicks in. As of right now for the Ballon Dor, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham have an edge over everyone because Real Madrid won the Champions League, but now that Spain has won the EUROs and he was the best player of the tournament, Rodri is among the contenders to win the Ballon Dor and while he won’t win it, if he manages to win it, I won’t have an issue with that at all.
