Dude, I drove uber eats every lunchbreak I had for 3 months at work to save up for an HX Stomp in 2019. I have used it for gigs countless times and is still, for the money the best gear purchase I’ve ever made, bar none. It’s still on my board now, used on countless worship and cover band gigs. It’s the GOAT imo

I did the same thing lol the only time I’ll feel like I want a new modeler is if line 6 releases a new one
I’ve also convinced my dad who’s all tube all analog to get one and now he barely uses his real amps haha!

    • @DareBear2099

@@Valerious187 I’m a tube amp guy but most of my gigs require a silent stage. Hell even with my tube amp I made patches for my stomp with my amp! It’s literally the brains of my entire rig. And same sentiments with getting a new modeler, if line 6 release an HX Stomp 2, whatever that is I’m buying it. The QC nano and Kemper player might sound better, but they aren’t nearly as flexible and cost effective. HX Stomp is king in my eyes

There are some excellent tube amps with cab sim outs, so it uses the actual amp.
I’ve been using the Revv d20, and it works really well. I’ve used many modelers, and the HX Stomp, and the presets in the Revv worked just as well as any amp and cab model I’ve made or tried.
Egnater makes an amp that has one, and has silent or amp speaker on, with the Cab Sim out.
Friedman make one. The BE50 and 100 I think.

It really is an amazing bit of kit, (and John you are largely responsible for me getting one about 3 years or so back). Initially i just used it for practice at home with it sat on the desktop (brilliant application for it) but maybe a year or more ago i bit the bullet, put it on a board with a few drives in front and use it as my modulation, delays and verbs either into my amp, or actually most often now as the amp(s) as well into FOH. I added a Jet Micro as well which made it even better for live use… i look at all my other pedals now and think ‘what do i need you for?”

The HX Stomp feeds my studio monitors 99% of the time and works great for low volume recording. Sometimes I use it as my full rig, sometimes it's the amp sim at the end of my board and sometimes I use it for one specific effect that I don't already own. It just does so much and I think most people should own one if they don't already have anything like it.

In terms of value for the money, features, size, amp model and effects availability, and output options, the HX Stomp is the best piece of musical kit in which I've ever invested. After almost 4 years of owning one, I'm still excited and giddy about putting together new presets.

This is beautifully timed for me as I've just taken delivery of my first Stomp XL after a lot of saving. Your channel and sounds are the reason (and yes, I have bought all your Helix sounds!) I don't know if this will help, but Yamaha/Line 6 are owe you a lot of credit/cash for your championing of the Helix Stomp. I can't play nearly as well as you, but at least thanks to the Helix/Gumroad folder, I can't blame my gear! 😂😂😂

I never owned a stomp, but I absolutely love my Helix Floor and will never get rid of that. The only thing I haven't found out yet speaking of the reverbs is how to make the reverbs sound as good as my BigSky. Can't get the Hall and Bloom to sound similar. But other than that, I tried a pedalboard setup for a couple of months, but quickly switched back to my Helix 😂

I love the Stomp. I play bass, and I used to use a lovely Darkglass X Ultra bass DI. I used the Stomp to be the rest of my board, for compression, preamp, noise gate, IR and some FX and so forth with the Darkglass in the loop as the 'heart' of the tone. But then I started fiddling around trying to recreate the same tone without the Darkglass in it. To start with I got close, then I ended up with a better sound just from the Stomp on it's own. So the Darkglass was relegated to a compression and easy to adjust EQ section. Then my board go rained on at a festival and my Darkglass died. The Stomp was fine. Brilliant bit of gear. Then they added the model of the Noble Preamp, which is a ruinously expensive yet magnificent bit of kit. Appears one day in my stomp for free. Makes any bass patch sound better. Absolutely superb. There's also such a good selection of bass kit in this thing that puts its competitors to shame. Fender's Tonemaster has nothing for the bass. And they invented the f***ing bass! Look no further folks.

I agree the HX stomp is awesome and sensational value. For something that you could realistically do any gig in the world with and not feel short changed on quality... It's hard to beat I think.
I guess the other way of looking at it is... The difference between having a guitar and not is the difference between making music and not. A modeller has many practical and creative uses certainly but it's not the fundamental tool that means "we have music".
So I'd see some of the cheap guitars you can get now being more incredible value in terms of what they enable to a wider audience than ever.

I think it's certainly the best practice tool for headphone use I've ever bought. I use the effects loop to input songs in stereo that I'm working on via my phone.
The Stomp's "dynamic" stereo reverbs are especially nice in the livingroom-practice use case.
Compared to the Boss 500 series pedals, for example, the Stomp UI is a dream.

I just picked up one together with a tonex already wired up for that so called “dream combo”. THE DAY AFTER I got it, the guy who sold me the pair messaged me with a video about the tonex getting FX. He was gutted - i was very amused . Then I tried them individually and realised the sheer power of both. I love the stomp - I once had a helix but it melted my brain. But this is the right level for me - sounds mint in DI. However I must buy your presets cos i can’t quite get that Eric Johnson lead town……..but that might be that I’m lacking in the fingers department 😂

Thank you for doing reviews of high(er) end gear. I find them interesting and helpful. As you say, there are plenty of people like me buying gear without making a penny from it. I'd say I spend at least $1000 (USD) a year, on average, on my guitar hobby. Also, taxation makes a difference. I spend half the year in a country with 15% VAT and the other half where there is none, so gear irrationally seems a bargain in the latter, as though it was on sale.

Even lower price with the same sounds, larger screen, and expression pedal built in (no need to buy extra midi pedal). If you are someone who just wants some basics, the Pod Go is a no-brainer. With so many multifx coming out I think hx stomp is still to beat, I have not seen a well thought out 3 stomp box with great versatility. The command center is a genius feature like running mulitiple snapshots in a single footswitch. A 2018 product from the future.
I just bought my hx stomp recently and I didn’t feel like I bought an Iphone 6 in 2024, the tonex One on my fx loop makes it even better. What made me really buy this thing is bcoz I love recreating the tones of my favorite artists like plini, jakub, mayer, but specifically the Mk.gee tones thanks to the Retro Reel fx. Wish they could add something like a rainger reverb in the future and wish to come up with my unique sound with the combination of those tones that inspired me.

I agree. I pretty much have 3 "rigs" I use recently.
Rig 1 is a pedalboard with my favorite drives which I use in conjunction with an amp, usually a katana 100 as a clean-ish pedal platform.
Rig 2 is hxstomp, with exp pedal and hotone midi pedalboard, plus 1 or 2 pedals.
Rig 3 is just the good old original ampero, (4 buttons) which fits in my gigbag for when I'm lazy want to carry everything in 1 trip or rehearsals.
Sometimes I wish the hxstomp was as slim as the ampero, I'd definitely use it more if it was, but I always feel like I need at least one more button.
I'm actually excited about the new ampero 2, at that size, with s/r, mic in, dual paths, and looks like profiling capabilities, it might take the cake.

Sincerest condolences for your loss John Nathan, losing a loved one is no easy thing. Much appreciation & Respect for never shilling and being yerkindself \m/

I do feel Lin6 may need to adjust its pricing a bit for future relevance, or do a complete update / overhaul on the hardware level. On the other hand: why would they? Just to compete for those guitarists that switch platforms every time something new comes around without actually making any new sounds with the new gear? L6 does show what can be achieved by continually optimizing hardware / software capabilities. Personally, I've been thinking about an HX stomp as a (post) fx unit for a long time but never took the plunge. The second hand prices are persistently on the high side imo.

FYI, re: aliasing -- captures should not have aliasing unless the captured unit had aliasing (ie, you were capturing something digital) or the audio interface was badly designed. The extra high frequencies get cut by a LPF on the audio interface before it hits the converter, assuming those frequencies made it past the cab and mic (if used).
Re: Digitech Drop, I have one and I feel the latency on it as well. From the numbers I could find online, Poly Capo has less latency than the Digi Drop. FWIW, the latency feels more manageable through a cab in a live situation than in the studio.
Re: best of all time -- I agree. I put it above the XL because the compact form factor is so much nicer for pedalboards.

The day of Hx Stomp is coming to an end. Hotone is putting profiling in their Ampero II Stage. For the same price, you get more utility. Triple DSP chip architecture, Touch screen, up to 12 blocks a patch, 7 switches, USB C connection, profiling, Bluetooth everything, drum machine, XLR Outs, vocal processing with XLR in, dedicated switch to change modes, up to 192k audio over USB 8in8out. It keeps going... Only thing HxStomp has on it at that point is the number of models possibly.

That's great but Helix Native combined with the HX Stompf is still absolutely cool and unique. I paired mine with a Tonex One and I couldn't imagine anything better for a relatively cheap price. If you want better effects, I would rather go up to a Fractal device.

Is it better to have a consistent delay tone throughout songs in a set except in regard to changing the bpm to that of each song? Or does the audience benefit from different delay models and tone changes between every song? Isn’t that a bit jarring and breaks the illusion and glamour of the experience? Anyone else have an experience on that?

I don't own both, but I've heard the ampero live and it feels like it relies too much on IRs to get a good sound, I am currently running my HX stomp on stock cabs, not even using IRs anymore.

As far as " silent stage" goes, why are professional musicians bowing to this trend pushed by manufacturers and professional sound engineers? Sound reinforcement is there to assist the performing artist..., not the other way around. Show some backbone and nip this odious trend in the bud, before it is too late, and live music is just a regulated industry controlled by local government hacks, and unable to be opposed. If you want to play rock music, why go cap in hand to the castrators of the very spirit of rock, and their hangers on in the live engineering clique. I have no problem with anyone using anything in the line level, no amp area, but only if it is their choice! If you go along, blindly, with anything imposed on you, you are encouraging further restrictions on actual sincere artists who may choose a different approach. Live sound is there as a service to the onstage musician, so they can make a better result for the listening audience. No way should we allow the constant encroachment on guitarists ( or drummers)'s freedom of choice in the expression of their music. Again, live sound is there to enhance the sound made by musicians. If you're incapable of moderating your onstage sound in relation to the other band members, then you shouldn't be onstage, you should be in your practice space learning the basics of hiw to play in a rock band. For many years I heard bands where the guitarists were far too loud,( and often out of tune). This wasn't caused by lack of line level presets you can monitor and feed to front of house, it was caused by people just being stupid and not learning their craft before going out in public. Of course there were no tuners when I started playing live, but if you have such an under-developed ear that you can't tune ( and be the same range of other instruments) then you shouldn't be there.
