3 reasons I think steam deck is successful: 1. It is a cheap, no nonsense, no PC part research needed way to dip your toes into PC gaming 2. It scratches the same tinkering itch for people that custom firmware consoles do, meaning it doesn't just appeal to newcomers, it appeals to advanced tech-y people like me 3. The control scheme on it is the best that currently exists in a controller layout (sadly)
Honestly, the steam deck got me comfortable and confident enough to replace the M.2 Drive, then snowballed into researching and building my own first pc with no help. And I was scared to even remove the side panel on my prebuilt, thinking I’d fry or break something😂.

Meanwhile, on a custom built or even pre-built there's not many video guides aimed at newcomers you can follow step by step. Speaking of good documentation, Steam Deck has much better tutorialization on how to do Linux stuff on youtube because the tutorials are often made by people who approach it like a console modding guide, not often by linux veterans who are so inside their own bubble they just assume you know advanced terminology and concepts, so people actually follow "Keep It Simple, Stupid" more often when it comes to making deck tutorials instead of "I've been doing this the complicated way for years thus this is the best way."
Steam Deck is a massive success for one reason alone, it converted me 😂. All my life I was stubborn about getting into PC gaming and was strictly a console gamer, but alas, the SD came along and I made the jump. I have joined the PC master race and have recollected like 70% of all my games ever growing up now on my Steam library and able to play them on the go.
I personally picked up a Steam Deck because I was starting to get frustrated with the Nintendo Switch. Not necessarily the power. But the types of games that were able to be played on it. Obviously, you have your first party Nintendo games. You certainly can’t play the Resident Evil remakes, Elden Ring, Spider-Man, etc. Having those games and MUCH more on a handheld device was a huge motivation to buying the deck.
Ironically for me it was my dive to the switch and playing ds1 remaster there that convinced me of the overall formfactor of Handhelds.The "treat-single player games like a book" vibe is really awesome, and no interesting games came out, so I sold my switch in favor of a SD. The only "problem" I have now as a refurbished LCD SD guy who wants to upgrade is: do I buy the OLED version now, or do I wait until the SD2 is out?
Im pumped for mvc collection. Whenever I go to people's houses I bring my deck and being able to play Marvel when doing that is awesome. My dream for my deck is that I can just pull it out and duel people in the street like I'm a yugioh protagonist
i think a lot of the frustration that people feel for the difficulty actually just stems from the horrible performance. NOTHING is more rage inducing than taking a hit or falling off a path due to random stutters!
To be fair, Eldin Ring introduced a lot of new mechanics that made it easier than others in the souls series. It was just an easier game. Then the DLC comes out and “casual” players, not die hards that watch stuff like this, sub to gaming websites, or closely follow these things, decide to get it and realize they significantly upped the difficulty and the DLC wasn’t just more of what they enjoyed. You have to consider that Eldin may be some peoples first game in the series and they didn’t expect the difficulty.
Mortal Kombat 1, Arkham Knight and now Perfect Dark. You know for every cool thing the Switch does from time to time, games that have these many issues is super embarrassing to see. This is a large reason why I am happy with the Deck since *we're* in control of the graphics quality and framerates that we're happy with (of course the optimization is still on the devs) instead of getting ports with frankly unacceptable issues.
The one thing that resonated immediately with me was the fact I could get games I wanted to play right out of the box. No messing around with Windows drivers, regedit, no wondering if the hardware was compatible. Just use it at an affordable price with acceptable to downright good framerates. I've been impressed that the hardware has held up without issues. I had a problem where the battery fully discharged and I couldn't get it to respond at all. Low and behold, a quick search and the Reddit community had a solution. And Steam wants these to be repaired. This is the kind of product people want to support, not some closed, unrepairable platform.
Ok I've been gaming on windows since windows 98 playing Braveheart, a shitty movie tie-in game. Never have I EVER needed to mess with registry to play any games. I know hating on windows is popular in the linux community, and most of the time it really is justified, but come on man regedit? Really?
@@cfilorvyls457 getting hardware to play nice on a budget is not always straight forward. I don't hate Windows per se, I dislike MS intrusions into my computer and an OS that operates as malware. It's also problematic as to the often hidden parts when trying to troubleshoot what's going on, logs and all. This coming from someone who's used MS products since DOS 3.0. I just happen to like the convenience of the Steamdeck for gaming
Don't know if everyone is aware, but Fromsoft screwed up Sekiro on PC also. Its playable at great frame rates sure, but for some reason it has SEVERE ghosting artifacts on screen to where its just unpleasantly unplayable. Luckily it runs very well on deck so I just played it there.
my favorite part of the deck is actually the same reason I used to be heavily invested in the Sony ecosystem in the PSP and PS Vita era. At the time, there were several games that you could buy both versions of and transfer save progress back and forth between them, some of which were even a buy once and get both versions game. So, what I would do is bounce between my PS3 and PS Vita. Now I can do the same thing with the deck and with steam cloud saves it's just so much better. Before, I had to plug my Vita into the PS3 with a transfer cable and manually copy over each and every save I worked on while I was away, now, it's just as easy as closing the game on one device and opening it on the other. Thing is though, it's even replaced my Switch as my primary gaming device. They both do similar things but the link with my existing save files and library allowing me to make use of my more powerful home computer as well..... yeah, can't beat that... I actually think consolized PCs like the Deck will be the future of consoles. You can already DIY one by grabbing a $250 mini PC box/stick and slapping Bazzite or a similar alternative onto it.. and for the most part, it just works with your existing steam library :)
You can also speed up downloads on the Deck if you already have the game installed on your Desktop. You can enable LAN transfers instead of downloading from scratch.
I set everything on low for Eden Ring, and then swap to High indoors. I swap a lot, its not a big deal to me and I end up playing a good portion of the game with very high settings.
The earliest cross-play game I can think of is Quake 3 Arena for PC/Mac/Linux and Dreamcast... with the Dreamcast players getting immediately wrecked because of control limitations and lack of aim assist in that game. Is anyone aware of anything earlier than that?

I recently found out to my greatest surprise that the Steam Deck runs games MUCH better than Windows. It has incredible optimizations under the hood. I have 2 Decks, the LCD and OLED, and I installed Windows 11 on the LCD version to play Xbox Game Pass games. Games that struggle to run on the Windows version run absolutely flawlessly on SteamOS/Proton.
That has more to do with AMD's Windows driver being absolute ass and RADV (the Linux AMD Vulkan Driver) being community developed (along with RedHat and Valve) so it's muuuuuuuuuch better than the official driver (even on Linux).
Today's algorithm comment is oh the memory of my first gaming pc that I had always wanted so i could finally play dark souls 3 and elden ring when it came out [this was two years before ER] and mfing DS3 had frame rate skips and lags, even on lowest on 1660 s 1080p as well as elden ring. I saw a comment that didn't like the click bait section about this but i wouldn't call that click bait, that shit was real, one of the MAIN reasons I got a steam deck was even though I did play through ER and beat it on my 1660 s [i have a 4060 now] I got the LCD stream deck not to exercise like I often comment about but to actually play dark souls 3 and elden ring without the gosh dang horrible stuttering problems. Like duuuuuuude, it was a tiping point that the steam deck would allow optimization similar to a console. It's sad that SotE is having these issues but I hope and suspect at least for the deck some of them may be fixed in the future. at least here's hoping new game, convergence looks to be an awesome metroidvania, only played intro, will be a great exercise game, apparently based on that leage of legends thing I don't reawlly know much about that game or world but it looked cool, comma splice, okay bye
@FanTheDeck, can you please test sly Cooper thieves in time? Bare in mind I think there's a patch you can install that makes the game run better but even still, i think it wasn't enough to make it perfect. Would be nice to see if the new cpu improvements make a difference in this game. 😊
I just ordered the OLED Steam Deck, and paired with my Switch OLED, I'm going PC/Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch moving forward for my gaming. For games that need more power for better performance, I'll play those on my desktop.

For me I preorderd my deck because I knew the community support would be there also the price was right the others are to expensive, and love that I can play all my games from starfleet accadamy from 1997, to fallout 3 to starfeld all on one bit of kit, only thing we rearly need is nexus mods coming onboard
The way I see it, the base game is relatively easy to do without all the tools available. The dlc was made to make you use all of them. People are mad they need to use things they didn't need before, but that's the point.
FromSoftware is trash at ports, will be 🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠ every game from them. They dont have the most basic tech on their games ex FSR/DLSS/XESS the game get fps drops in an FUCKING 4090
Post Elden Ring, Armored Core 6 was perfect on PC on release. So yeah, looks like they finally "can" do right PC ports. Shadow of the ErdTree was always going to be based on Elden Ring's issues so i'm not really suprirsed it having issues again.
What if Sony went to Valve with this: "Hey Gabe, you like our PS games on Steam, right? What about you offer Half Life Alyx to the PSVR owners on Steam to keep things that way?". I think it's a win win situation anyway but who knows how cocky Sony can be, right?
Elden Ring base game online play is broken on Deck/Linux since 1.12. EAC looks for a file called dlc.bdt which isn't present without buying the DLC and without it will refuse to let users connect citing "inappropriate activity".
Steam Deck is great but until they sell daughter boards I will never recommend one to anyone ever again. A simple flaw in the shoulder buttons invalidates the whole thing. Not everyone has the soldering skills, the expensive equipment nor the knowledge on where to buy used products to replace parts that VALVE does not sell...
Good thing I didn't buy Beyond Good and Evil lol, was hyped to see one of my childhood games get a re-release, but definitely won't pay for a game packed with borderline malware.
I just reserve some games, like elden ring, god of war, latest horizon and such for in a few years when they will sell for 15-20 bucks and run great on next gen hardware.
Without the Switch, the steam deck simply would not exist as it is today. Devs flocked to the system to optimize games on the Switch because that’s where the consumers were. Valve was smart to make something that did the same for the PC handheld market and despite being the least powerful handheld PC, the SD blows away the ROG Aly, Legion Go etc… can’t wait for the next Switch and SD! It has definitely made me a more smart consumer for sure! 🎉
shoutout to Durante. heard of him mainly through all his work on the Falcom titles (Ys and the Legend of Heroes series) that hes helped but didn't realize he helped fixed these other games that were more known
I haven't noticed any performance issues on the dlc for the deck. Didn't even check what the graphics are, just went with the default and my usual 45 fpd cap, and it stays there.
Honestly some of the difficulty with a few of the bosses is due to breaking a billion boxes all at once, or having some of the worst camera angles out there.
I believe those games were cpu hoggs and were difficult for me to run via steam deck unless you have a good desktop pc to run them the rog users may be able to run them alittle better but the frame rates are not great. Or else wait for mgs4 to come out on steam through collection part 2 . It would be nice if one day GOW comes to pc.the classics.
This is why I am not a fanboy and keep every console around. I am in the middle of jailbreaking a PS4 slim, so give me more options of where to play games. Porting sometimes doesn't work out, poorly optimized games make, at times, superior PC hardware useless vs. just turning on a console. I am primary a PC gamer and always have been also.
I was so excited for that Portal 2 Steam integration back in the day. Sadly around the time Portal 2 came out on the PS3, the Sony servers were hacked and PSN was down for like 3 weeks, putting a dampener on the collaboration.
Its weird to me how few people know that the complaints on elden ring are mainly from china and mostly about the "Blue bear" software screwing up the games functionality. (the anti piracy DRM software thats usually an issue with most games)
17:19 Marvel Vs Capcom is the greatest commercial fighting series ever created, (I say that because the best fighting game is non commercial its called "M.U.G.E.N" and unless you are a true fighting game fan you've likely never even heard of it lol) it paved the way for many modern fighting games being the first of many in game mechanics. That all said, over the years its evolved to keep up, and age exceedingly well. Marvel vs Capcom 3 ultimate edition has ate so many hours of my life. The games a time vampire of replay ability. If you happen to have a buddy to play it with (online of locally) it becomes that much more fun. Killer Instinct series is a close second for me Soul calibur the 3rd place. All 3 of them (MvC and KI and SC) are better than anything street fighter, mortal kombat or tekken for example has ever created (for me anyways.) I buy all these franchises as a fighting game fan. But as far as commercial titles go Marvel vs Capcom is a love letter to fighting game mechanics and it takes the proverbial cake for that reason alone.
:55 no, from software made a ton of games for all consoles. They even made a fair number of Xbox exclusives like Otogi, Otogi 2, Ninja Blade and Metal Wolf Chaos. Their back catalog of games are more than just Souls games. They made more than Bloodborne and Demons Souls as far as console exclusives go. They existed before their Souls games
I beat 2 of the main DLC bosses on my deck so I'm not sure why some people have such trouble with it. Even using uncapped framerates but i also keep settings on low. Can't hardly tell a difference with low/high settings on an 800p screen anyway.
I'm still waiting for gen 2. I'm tired of dealing with gen 1 devices. I was kind of expecting/hoping for a faster generation cycle since it didn't have the same limitations that a console has tied to it. I'd have got it regardless if it had longer battery life.
@@phantomstarlight1366you will be waiting for awhile for gen 2. The oled does drain battery quicker with new titles if it's older games from 3 yrs back and longer the battery is good especially if u emulate .
Yeah I would like you to test mgs4, I think uncharted is probably off the table but I trust that you have a solid idea of games that people generally want running. Maybe a top 10-15 games aside from what’s already running . Shadow of the colossus port would be awesome
I complited the dlc on the old lcd model. I connected to my TV. I had zero issues on the deck 30-50 fps. The only frame dropp I had was by the last boss it had some divine aoe it went to 20 fps.
I tried out the Perfect Dark decomp recently and I didn't need to modify any INI files or anything to get it to run full screen - I'm guessing they made improvements since the guide you shared was made.
Easy fix with a USB stick and another internet connected PC. The on-device bootloader might even be able to start to the secondary OS copy as-is. Or the issue could be your internet, the initial setup is known to be finicky with that. Either way, not a brick, but some tinkering might be required.

it was actually revealed that Chinese players were also review bombing about half of the negative reviews due to anti cheat.

I'm glad you mentioned Warhawk, Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2. Those are such good games. I have fond memories of playing those games

For me I preorderd my deck because I knew the community support would be there also the price was right the others are to expensive, and love that I can play all my games from starfleet accadamy from 1997, to fallout 3 to starfeld all on one bit of kit, only thing we rearly need is nexus mods coming onboard

The way I see it, the base game is relatively easy to do without all the tools available. The dlc was made to make you use all of them.

In the end. It's just a minor fix. Not a BIG ONE. Which does not increases the VRAM from 4GB to 8GB due to mostly being used as RAM.

Post Elden Ring, Armored Core 6 was perfect on PC on release. So yeah, looks like they finally "can" do right PC ports. Shadow of the ErdTree was always going to be based on Elden Ring's issues so i'm not really suprirsed it having issues again.
What if Sony went to Valve with this: "Hey Gabe, you like our PS games on Steam, right? What about you offer Half Life Alyx to the PSVR owners on Steam to keep things that way?". I think it's a win win situation anyway but who knows how cocky Sony can be, right?
Elden Ring base game online play is broken on Deck/Linux since 1.12. EAC looks for a file called dlc.bdt which isn't present without buying the DLC and without it will refuse to let users connect citing "inappropriate activity".
The only reason I got the Steamdeck was to play Elden ring. How I'm hooked on other steam games and have about 50 on my wish list.
Steam Deck is great but until they sell daughter boards I will never recommend one to anyone ever again. A simple flaw in the shoulder buttons invalidates the whole thing. Not everyone has the soldering skills, the expensive equipment nor the knowledge on where to buy used products to replace parts that VALVE does not sell...

Good thing I didn't buy Beyond Good and Evil lol, was hyped to see one of my childhood games get a re-release, but definitely won't pay for a game packed with borderline malware.
I just reserve some games, like elden ring, god of war, latest horizon and such for in a few years when they will sell for 15-20 bucks and run great on next gen hardware.
Without the Switch, the steam deck simply would not exist as it is today. Devs flocked to the system to optimize games on the Switch because that’s where the consumers were. Valve was smart to make something that did the same for the PC handheld market and despite being the least powerful handheld PC, the SD blows away the ROG Aly, Legion Go etc… can’t wait for the next Switch and SD! It has definitely made me a more smart consumer for sure! 🎉

I haven't noticed any performance issues on the dlc for the deck. Didn't even check what the graphics are, just went with the default and my usual 45 fpd cap, and it stays there.
Out of all the handheld devices, the Steam Deck has been the most satisfying. The ergonomics and software are the best.

Honestly some of the difficulty with a few of the bosses is due to breaking a billion boxes all at once, or having some of the worst camera angles out there.

My question about rpcs3 is can it play God of War 3 or MGS4? Those are the games that I cannot get running for nothing.
I believe those games were cpu hoggs and were difficult for me to run via steam deck unless you have a good desktop pc to run them the rog users may be able to run them alittle better but the frame rates are not great. Or else wait for mgs4 to come out on steam through collection part 2 . It would be nice if one day GOW comes to pc.the classics.
Not necessarily even a super powerful PC, my Intel Arc A380 and Ryzen 3 4100 run these games fine.

This is why I am not a fanboy and keep every console around. I am in the middle of jailbreaking a PS4 slim, so give me more options of where to play games. Porting sometimes doesn't work out, poorly optimized games make, at times, superior PC hardware useless vs. just turning on a console. I am primary a PC gamer and always have been also.
I was so excited for that Portal 2 Steam integration back in the day. Sadly around the time Portal 2 came out on the PS3, the Sony servers were hacked and PSN was down for like 3 weeks, putting a dampener on the collaboration.
Its weird to me how few people know that the complaints on elden ring are mainly from china and mostly about the "Blue bear" software screwing up the games functionality. (the anti piracy DRM software thats usually an issue with most games)
17:19 Marvel Vs Capcom is the greatest commercial fighting series ever created, (I say that because the best fighting game is non commercial its called "M.U.G.E.N" and unless you are a true fighting game fan you've likely never even heard of it lol) it paved the way for many modern fighting games being the first of many in game mechanics. That all said, over the years its evolved to keep up, and age exceedingly well.
Marvel vs Capcom 3 ultimate edition has ate so many hours of my life. The games a time vampire of replay ability. If you happen to have a buddy to play it with (online of locally) it becomes that much more fun. Killer Instinct series is a close second for me Soul calibur the 3rd place. All 3 of them (MvC and KI and SC) are better than anything street fighter, mortal kombat or tekken for example has ever created (for me anyways.) I buy all these franchises as a fighting game fan. But as far as commercial titles go Marvel vs Capcom is a love letter to fighting game mechanics and it takes the proverbial cake for that reason alone.

Their back catalog of games are more than just Souls games. They made more than Bloodborne and Demons Souls as far as console exclusives go. They existed before their Souls games
I beat 2 of the main DLC bosses on my deck so I'm not sure why some people have such trouble with it. Even using uncapped framerates but i also keep settings on low. Can't hardly tell a difference with low/high settings on an 800p screen anyway.
I'm still waiting for gen 2. I'm tired of dealing with gen 1 devices. I was kind of expecting/hoping for a faster generation cycle since it didn't have the same limitations that a console has tied to it.
I'd have got it regardless if it had longer battery life.

@@phantomstarlight1366you will be waiting for awhile for gen 2. The oled does drain battery quicker with new titles if it's older games from 3 yrs back and longer the battery is good especially if u emulate .

I complited the dlc on the old lcd model. I connected to my TV. I had zero issues on the deck 30-50 fps. The only frame dropp I had was by the last boss it had some divine aoe it went to 20 fps.
EA launcher: I have noticed also that if you have parental controls turned on an account it breaks the EA launcher and is impossible to get past.
Deck has most of a console's polish and simplicity, most of a PC's flexibility, and most of a PC's library compatibility.

I tried out the Perfect Dark decomp recently and I didn't need to modify any INI files or anything to get it to run full screen - I'm guessing they made improvements since the guide you shared was made.

Until your steam deck won’t verify installation and now you got a brick for a handheld….
Easy fix with a USB stick and another internet connected PC.
The on-device bootloader might even be able to start to the secondary OS copy as-is.
Or the issue could be your internet, the initial setup is known to be finicky with that.
Either way, not a brick, but some tinkering might be required.
