taylor swift's music is fine, even really good as far as pop music goes. but this whole taylor swift phenomenon is so odd. I feel like there's this mass desire or even FOMO desire to be part of it (e.g. fans) and/or benefit from it (e.g. media), which is driving this phenomenon so much more than the music
I do too. I’ve never been a Swiftie, but I feel like I hit Eras Tour fatigue in like April. It’s now September and we still have so much of it (Including the movie) to go. Here Taylor, here’s your gold star for going on stage, performing, and recycling your old stuff. Come back when you have new stuff and we’ll talk then.
That's always been the case when a musician gets big enough. If you're the biggest artist in the world, some of your fan base is going to be just because you're the biggest artist in the world. It's been true for The Beatles, Madonna, Kanye, and any other artist that could be called a phenomenon.
Last (white wo)man standing, it also doesn't help that every person who has to write for a living or people write about for living is a swiftie, a parent of one, or at least knows one personally.
It's been driving me up a wall for months. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills while everyone's maintaining this facade that the unseasoned chicken of music is secretly the greatest musical act since The Beatles. I'll be in class, hear some incredibly boring Swift song with absolutely nothing interesting on production, and then I'll hear people saying they love it. I feel like I'm losing my mind hearing endless praise for music that makes me want to hook a car battery to my balls so I can feel anything

Two points: 1. As far as country artists performing at the VMAs, Kacey Musgraves performed at the VMAs in 2021 (and Taylor pre-1989 counts here too, of course). 2. Kelsea Ballerini released an EP, Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, which came out earlier this year (along with a deluxe edition a few weeks ago), that is a LOT more pop than her previous four albums--which is interesting because her most album, last year's Subject to Change, is overall her most overtly country sounding album yet.
i went to the pre-taping of the fall out boy performance and the vibe of the people i went with was “why the fuck didn’t they play their song that was up for an award”. had i known i was going to waste like 8 hours of my day to see that song four times i probably wouldn’t have gone. the redeeming part of the experience was the crowd singing sugar we’re going down and patrick joining in. we also couldn’t parse why patrick and pete had the big suits on. was it a talking heads thing? if so, why???? whatever. i had fun. that song is not good tho
kelsea ballerini was on right after them, she was super cute and charming on stage, and very excited about her quick change, which she had to redo because she tore it off on the wrong word the first time around
To be frank I believe the VMA's are doing Taylor how they did Michael Jackson in the 90s. Michael and the VMA's had a VERY love/hate relationship, so to ensure that Michael would actually show up or even better perform, they would give him whatever award he wanted EVEN if they had to create one just for Michael. I'm starting to feel like that's what's going on with Taylor and the VMA's, kinda how the Grammy's has done Beyonce, with the only difference being Beyonce is more than aware she's just here for face. Taylor as it was said does like the VMA's but I think she's VERY aware that they are giving her all these awards to keep her there. Awards shows has their favorites and they want to make sure those favorites are in the front row.
@@kevaughnramsay9846 They are but the point I'm making is the VMA's will always give out awards to their favorites and the ones they need to fill those seats.

The song got almost ruined for me by the commercial success. Ik it's weird, but I don't like the fact everyone knows it now. It felt like a hidden gem for only Swifites now its everyones.

I like the we didn’t start the fire modernisation because I am a long time fall out boy fan and i think it’s cool to see them embrace them being in their post history, id rather they be dorky and embarrassing in a fun way than be what they were during the 2010s
THANK YOU TODD!! NewJeans 1000% should’ve been motivated this year. NewJeans don’t just make good music by k-pop standards but good music in general. Like really good music. They should’ve been nominated last year too if we’re bbreally being honest. Their music is just WAYY TOO good to simply ignore.
Fr 😓 And I’ve kinda TRIED to ignore them bc they have a couple songs that are too innuendo filled and flirtatious for a group with such young kids and it makes me UNCOMFY But man they really groove..
Besides the VMAs, this is a rather quiet month for Taylor, compared to October: - The Continuation of Eras Tour - The Eras Tour Movie - 1989 Taylor's Version - Many, many Swifties' halloween outfits It truly is just getting started.
its the end of the line. All of this has been 'I grew up with Swifty,' none has been what she's doing currently. She's a Vegas act now like Katy Perry and Beyonce.
34:56 "Was Ma$e busy?!?" Yes, he was busy NOT speaking to Puff Daddy because of all the animosity between them regarding royalties. I'm guessing that's why the rest of the Bad Boy Family (edit: who are still alive) didn't make it either.

NewJeans songs are so lovely! They have such clear vocals…Todd I can’t believe you love them you always seemed to hate kpop because you never put it on your top ten (maybe NewJeans will feature on your 2023 top ten???)
I don't think not putting a kpop song in his top 10 songs of the whole year means he hates it. He obviously likes music that doesn't make it into his top 10. Also, kpop just isn't everyone's taste. It doesn't mean someone hates it if they don't care to listen to it.

that's so sad lol, as a brazilian who really wants her to succeed, I personally really like some of her songs in english but yeah she keeps trying to get a hit in the US but it's just not working
she only works singing brazilian funk in portuguese although i guess not even michael jackson could make this current generic, bland, boring music she's making work lol
I feel like what MTV had in the '90s (apart from nostalgia in the present, as others have suggested) is that music videos still had some of their '80s cultural cachet. This isn't to say they aren't still relevant, but compared to back when MTV played music it's not what it used to be. Also holy shit imagine they _did_ use AI to write parts of it and _this_ was the first media outlet to report on it.
I don’t get why N’SYNC was there. We were ALL expecting them to announce the reunion, but they just awkwardly stood there. Even Taylor gave them a second chance to make the announcement, but they didn’t.
i now unironically want the VMA's to make it a rule that if you don't show up Taylor gets to receive the award, wearing your nametag/an oversized T-shirt with their name on Sharpie also another year i want Reggaeton to stop trying to happen, that genre peaked at Calle 13 ... (actually for that matter, has anyone found where Bieber is supposed to be during Despacito?
It's literally the Taylor Swift show, but I mean her fans are probably keeping it alive so... Honestly most memorable part of the night for me was Nicki telling everyone to shut the fuck up when she was reading nominees- her energy is just always so weird and aggressive but I can't lie and pretend like it isn't funny to me. I loved Stray Kids, and they're one of the few big kpop acts that actually write and produce their own music, I think their pop is more fun than most the other stuff I heard at the VMA's, I wish they'd got to Item or DLC though I think maybe you guys would have vibed those songs more. Will say that weird song about not being a hoe anymore ?? made me laugh... Not sure about that one. Honestly Anitta was very mid to me and FOB was cringeworthy. The VMA's definitely just feels weird these days, like it's not quite right anymore, I still had fun talking shit while it was on though.
For One Hit Wonderland, how about Michael Franti & Spearhead's "Say Hey (I Love You")? That song was everywhere between 2009 and 2011, from the opening credits of "Valentine's Day" to trailers for "The Backup Plan" and "Grown Ups".
Taylor and I were born two days apart. I’ve been a musician since a pre-teen, and the VMAs were the coolest thing growing up, seeing the event in its heyday as I, and probably she did, made a big impression on me. Honestly I’d have the same energy for it.
Another element in things like Conan doing the show w/o writers in the '07/'08 strike: That was pre- SAG and AFTRA, which resulted in a loophole that allowed for said approach. Since merging in 2012, that loophole no longer exists.
I didn't get why Fall Out Boy didn't play anything from their new album. A medley of Love From The Other Side, Hold Me Like a Grudge and Heartbreak Feels So Good could've been good. Hell, even their iconic older stuff.
MTV has lost its own connection to music videos on TV so because of that it seems pointless for them to A. be called Music Television and b. for them to still associate themselves with a music video awards
Okay. So, I listened to Olivia Rodrigo's song "The Grudge." (I am NOT going to write the title with no capitalization. I don't think this song is about Taylor Swift. I don't think it is a good idea to look at one lyric and say, "Oh, this song is about Taylor Swift."
very fun podcast! also could you pleeeeaaaaseeeeee turn on captions? i need my captions english is not my first language and audio-proccessing issues don't help ^^;
6:43 What did the MTV VMAS have in the 90s that the VMAS don’t have now? That is really easy! My favorite segment in all of VMA’S history, The International Viewers Choice.
In the past, we had no choice. in the 90s as a teen, we didn't get to just know everything about our signers, they was a mistic about them, and plus, we didn't have the internet to listen to songs wen ever we can. I will always remember Eminem opening the show with "guess who's back?" It was epic
I do wonder if airing this awards show was a test to see if they could use ChatGPT/AI to write a show script. If it was, I hope it does prove that writers are truly needed, and writers do deserve fair compensation.
i've been saying this for months or even years, anitta from head to toe is definitely an industry plant. wouldn't surprise me if she becomes really big in five years as other industry plants that people now seen as "iconic or legandary" like drake, cardi b, j-lo and travis scott.
The only reason why I watched the VMAs eas to see The Warning. They actually had a rock band preform, granted it was only a minute but they wete the only thing i enjoyed.
Hi, Todd. I enjoy hearing you and Lina talk about the VMA's. It is interesting to hear your thoughts on the performances, particularly because I myself didn't listen to the VMA's. Also, Todd, there used to be nine members in Stray Kids.
that's why i can't get into american music after listening to kpop. kpop songs seem to focus on impact way more, american pop songs sound like they were made to play repeatedly on the radio at walmart.
MTV does not play music videos anymore so I feel these VMAs are like a Zombie award show. Why is no one in media news talking about how MTV is just a Zombie network. How are they able to get acts to show up?
Todd in the shadows....n the shadows....you know who could be the next one hit wonder? the Rasmus - In the Shadows ... if it was even a thing in America
glad i'm not the only one who hates fall out boy's cover of billy joel's we didn't start the fire! i hope it makes it on your worst of 2023 list because i think it's as worse and bottom tier as taylor swift's cover of earth, wind and fire's september, john mayer's cover of tom petty's free fallin and madonna's cover of don mclean's american pie.
I completely understand the cult of Swifties but I also just straight up don’t get it.. What am I missing? Is she an inter-dimensional being that is trying to take over our universe? Because I’m not sure if I’ve seen a popstar with this much of a hold over people (not counting MJ). But I also completely understand MJ’s draw..
Ten albums means a heap of songs, with lyrics that connect with a wide array of people. Top notch production, puts on an amazing show. And she has become the biggest star in the world yet still comes off as somewhat normal, relatable/nice, unlike MJ or Madonna et al. Also she’s a very pretty white woman which also helps.
@@beverleyhicks2952 I totally understand that portion of it, but I guess I find it a little depressing too. My relationship with popstars wavers, and I just find the hero/cult worship of her kinda unsettling. I see Elon Musk the same way, but I’d say his true follower count couldn’t hold a candle to hers.
the thing with Taylor is the “cult following” is really a small percentage of her fans but there’s a lot larger percentage of people who hate her so that small percentage of people who are cultish gets portrayed as the majority instead of what it is
I'm watching this a few months out but you're definitely right about Shakira deserving her flowers now. And it made the rest of the show look terrible to see her give such a great performance. But also, I think you're right about Sabrina Carpenter. She recently got into trouble with the Brooklyn Diocese for filming a video at a church and she reminds me of a young Lady Gaga

@@meganperry9949 I just wanna listen to Todd and friends' thoughts on both songs as well as past and present experiences with both ladies. I also wonder about an episode on "Stronger" vs "Fighter" or "Sometimes" vs "What A Girl Wants".
Taylor keeps wining because her fans make it happen. That's all.
Or because she’s a fucking great songwriter? What is wrong with peoples’ brains that they don’t recognize that?
by 'fans', I think you mean bots. Something she's been busted for on twitter countless times.
@@GetBenched2010 she literally wins Grammy after Grammy, which is not a fan voted award. She has 2 of the best selling tours of all time. (Actual) critics praise her songwriting. How are you all this fucking stupid?
One thing I never get tired of is non-Kpop ppl confused by the size of kpop groups. Always funny

"Beavis, I'm going to leave you to your seven or eight or fifteen boy band guys"
taylor swift's music is fine, even really good as far as pop music goes. but this whole taylor swift phenomenon is so odd.
@@andysorensen1737yep, the movie, the album, the tour, and the many Taylor Swift halloween outfits. Mind you, this is literally just October.

Every year the VMAs happen I constantly feel like that clip of Lady Gaga saying “you guys are still here?”
Honestly the weirdest thing about learning Todd has a podcast is learning its not called the Todcast
just at the start - thank you for your service. I will never watch any of these shows but I very much enjoy hearing you talk about it, it's definitely a favourite of mine
Well it's been ten years that I stop watching VMA and when I heard about this podcast being posted, I dropped everything and decided to listen about this and I feel like I missed nothing from watching VMA and I made the right decision in quitting this show. Anyway great podcast folks keep up the good work.
Two points:
The interesting thing is I think Taylor has more actual VMAs than Michael does which is also bemusing and somewhat disconcerting.
Mj fans are so annoying bringing him up everywhere.
@@kevaughnramsay9846 They are but the point I'm making is the VMA's will always give out awards to their favorites and the ones they need to fill those seats.

Honestly it's still surprising that Cruel Summer didn’t reach #2 yet on the Billboard Hot 100. You guys think only a music video could make that a possibility?
I honestly haven’t given it one seconds thought.
If a music video was made now it would be released after the song reached its popularity.
The song got almost ruined for me by the commercial success. Ik it's weird, but I don't like the fact everyone knows it now. It felt like a hidden gem for only Swifites now its everyones.
And now it hit no.1
I was about to type a comment about how shocked I am that Olivia didn’t score a single award but then I remembered that these are fan-voted awards. Now it makes sense; nothing beats the Swifties.

Fr 😓
And I’ve kinda TRIED to ignore them bc they have a couple songs that are too innuendo filled and flirtatious for a group with such young kids and it makes me UNCOMFY
But man they really groove..
Their songs are SO good that you can’t help but love them.
Correct
Besides the VMAs, this is a rather quiet month for Taylor, compared to October:
- The Continuation of Eras Tour
- The Eras Tour Movie
- 1989 Taylor's Version
- Many, many Swifties' halloween outfits
It truly is just getting started.
Could have SWORN it was The Continuity of Arabs. I need to pay closer attention... Or, just stick to my NINs, Tools, and 90s hip hops.
its the end of the line. All of this has been 'I grew up with Swifty,' none has been what she's doing currently. She's a Vegas act now like Katy Perry and Beyonce.
If she and Travis go on to get married/have a baby, every second of it will be reposted a gazillion times on media. 😅😂
34:56 "Was Ma$e busy?!?"
Yes, he was busy NOT speaking to Puff Daddy because of all the animosity between them regarding royalties. I'm guessing that's why the rest of the Bad Boy Family (edit: who are still alive) didn't make it either.
i truly believe some of the key awards should not be fan-voted bc obviously the artist with the biggest fandom is gonna take it. very boring to see taylor’s least impressive record garner so many accolades.
I dunno. Todd did put Anti Hero as his #1 song last year.
NewJeans songs are so lovely! They have such clear vocals…Todd I can’t believe you love them you always seemed to hate kpop because you never put it on your top ten (maybe NewJeans will feature on your 2023 top ten???)
He put BTS' song "Boy With Luv" on his best list in 2019, but yeah it would be nice to see NewJeans make the list!
I don't think not putting a kpop song in his top 10 songs of the whole year means he hates it. He obviously likes music that doesn't make it into his top 10.
Also, kpop just isn't everyone's taste. It doesn't mean someone hates it if they don't care to listen to it.
The vmas are less relevant than ever
actually they had the best ratings they've had in three years but ok

They are getting together for the third Trolls movie. Maybe they weren't allowed to talk about anything because of the strikes
i now unironically want the VMA's to make it a rule that if you don't show up Taylor gets to receive the award, wearing your nametag/an oversized T-shirt with their name on Sharpie
also another year i want Reggaeton to stop trying to happen, that genre peaked at Calle 13 ...
I'm glad Swift is successful, but it's still OK to not like her or her music
Love these episodes!!!
For One Hit Wonderland, how about Michael Franti & Spearhead's "Say Hey (I Love You")? That song was everywhere between 2009 and 2011, from the opening credits of "Valentine's Day" to trailers for "The Backup Plan" and "Grown Ups".
B12? only 12 members?? those are sissy numbers. look up AKB48.
31:00 we listened to it in my 8th grade social studies class and then wrote our own versions - I was proud to rhyme Pokemon with Enron lol
These episodes feel like my reward for doing the homework that is the VMAs
I didn't get why Fall Out Boy didn't play anything from their new album. A medley of Love From The Other Side, Hold Me Like a Grudge and Heartbreak Feels So Good could've been good. Hell, even their iconic older stuff.
Taylor loves the VMAs because the moment she became a national treasure happened at the VMAs.
she went from underdog to high school mean girl in one night and ended Kanye and Beyonce's career in one shot.
She was at the VMA’s to win an award trust me her career was already booming
MTV has lost its own connection to music videos on TV so because of that it seems pointless for them to A. be called Music Television and b. for them to still associate themselves with a music video awards
41:23 that's NCT
Okay. So, I listened to Olivia Rodrigo's song "The Grudge." (I am NOT going to write

In the past, we had no choice. in the 90s as a teen, we didn't get to just know everything about our signers, they was a mistic about them, and plus, we didn't have the internet to listen to songs wen ever we can. I will always remember Eminem opening the show with "guess who's back?" It was epic

NewJeans got so snubbed. Insane.
I was glad I skipped something that hasn't been relevant in 20 years once I heard Taylor swept.
