Easy build out of a refrigerator box or plywood. If he has skills it would look like Superman’s building in Metropolis. I would have a lot of the windows light up too. Maybe some model sconces on the side of the building to light the building up blue. Inside the building could be a speaker that plays helicopter scenes from movies. Two words ... Winter Project. I had a similar copter. I painted it like a S.W.A.T chopper and it had a search light. I miss that bird.

@jeffrosamson Multirotor drones have flight controller or atleast gyro. Without gyro or flight controller, it is almost impossible to control especially to hover. I am pretty sure you flew cheap drone that doesn't have gyro or flight controller.

They did exactly that in "Die Hard", the building and helicopter in the roof explosion scene were 1/4 scale models shot from low angles to look bigger. If you look closely at the falling helicopter wreckage, you'll notice a flybar on the rotor head, a telltale sign that it's RC. Nowadays, RC helis don't need flybars and movies use CGI anyway.
I'm surprised the "heli pad" didn't tip over just from the air getting pushed down by the blades. Pretty risky landing, close to a wall, so extra turbulence, and it doesn't look like a cheap heli. But amazing control, respect for that.

But you have to admit it was a tricky stunt, and if the heli would have tipped over, and blades start hitting the ground, these can easily fly off in all directions at high speed. A crashing helicopter basically "explodes" if the rotor is still rotating at decent speed.

I've been flying RC aircraft including helicopters for over 45 years, it's not nearly as hard as you think in fact it is a lot easer today then it was just 20 years ago. Nowadays these flybarless systems pretty much fly themselves
To go further. It was 2006 and I ziptied a big hi-8 camera to the bottom and had to take off and land on a piece of plywood with a hole cut out for the camera to drop through and that was on a saw horse setup. It was until I tried to land on that elevated area and get the camera down in the hole that I realized how much ground effect there would suddenly be. It was scary. I thought I would run out of gas before I got it down lol.
That’s not ground effect, what your seeing is more likely recirculation. GE is only a factor about 2/3 of the disc vertically. But completely agree it’s much harder than it looks.

But in this video example if he was to move the hls platform away from his garage it would help, also his landing technique, I know that he does not want to wreck his awesomely done scale Heli, but if he was to try and utilise the zero speed landing technique, would also help. As all that hovering is making it harder with the disc experiencing different relative air flows each time he gets close to the pad, forward and down aiming to loose the last bit of forward air speed as the skids touch down, utilising the forward AS over the fuselage to help create aerodynamic stability, best to practice that by drawing the LZ on the ground before trying to do it on an elevated platform.
Wonderful model and very skillful flying. If you pause at 0:06, the perspective fools you into thinking it's a full-size helicopter hovering near the trees.
Holy smokes... I'm 90% sure you were featured in one of my old AMA DVDs flying a Bell design like this. During the interview, the builder talked about how it had a custom spotlight underneath the nose made out of a 35 mm film canister? It was a beautiful build, very similar to this one if not the same. I'm 25 now and I stopped flying back in high school, but I had found the DVD set at a bookstore when I was a teenager. I still have them somewhere.
As someone who grew up flying model airplanes, I can attest to the crazy skill level needed to fly these copters. It’s nothing like the idiot proof drones of today. (Which are still completely awesome)
Correct. Love my RC chopper. People always ask why I didn't buy a drone, I told them they're not as fun to fly as helicopters. They try flying the helicopter and completely mess up thinking it's going to be super easy.
Kudos. With my eye to hand coordination I would have cut my own hair, beat some paint off the car and busted all four windows in the garage door. Landing only because I have so little prop left that it wont stay aloft.
If people never took risks. Life would be very dull and boring. Their is satisfaction and a sense of achievement that comes from being vulnerable and coming out of it unscathed.
