Why are so many people afraid of MSG? As you said, it occurs naturally in a lot of food items but the pure MSG that we can buy is also extracted from a fermentation process based on starch and other natural sources. There just seem to be such a strong bias against MSG because it is associated with cheap Chinese restaurants and therefore is inherently "bad" and "unnatural" to consume.

    Hi Derek,
I know you mentioned Iodine in a previous video but I thought I would mention that I find we need more than the RDA. In fact, I'd suggest all the iodine is gone by the time your salt hits your table, if you use salt. Iodine evaporates very fast. There are lots of site on the internet suggesting you need more and they suggest way higher amounts.
I bring it up only because broccoli pulls iodine out of your system (its goitrogenic) and if you start to get cold hands and feet, it is likely due to low levels of iodine.
Yesterday I noticed my feet were cold while out on a walk and forgot about it. I then noticed it again this morning. So I put a few drops of Lugals (Iodine in water) into a cup of water. Now after a few hours my feet are toasty warm again.
So if people are getting cold feet or hands they should look into it. Read a lot and ask questions. Most doctors won't know about this for much the same reason they don't know about the need for a WFPB diet to stay healthy.
    I hope this helps.

Plastic-free is quite hard and sometimes you will opt for paper products only to find a plastic package inside the paper or cardboard package itself. In addition, I recently learned plastic grocery bags are made with animal fat to create a slippery texture to avoid sticking from static. Tough times. Even bulk bins are stocked from plastic containers.

The U.K is pushing hard because of consumer rage. I now see top supermarkets changing having no plastic sections and now some are banning the used of the black non recyclable trays. More talk on plastics in general (bio plastics) and much much more people walking with bags to pick up litter in my area too. I live in the Scottish Highlands. I see Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, M&S and Waitrose all taking Vegan ranges out too, vegan menu options appearing all over. makes me so happy.

On the plastics.. we tried for 3 months to go plastic free. We live in Norway... I think if I were living somewhere warmer with a good farmers market it would have worked better - but halfway through we started to feel SO limited in our choices. I did not feel we were getting the nutrition we should. So, we decided to do the best we could instead of 100% plastic free. It took lots of internal struggle to get to that point though.
The easiest first step is to take your own bags and produce bags! And if there is a plastic free option always get that :)

  • @jmeleopard

    Hi Derek!
I know and respect that you are working hard on the health aspect. But the tip about trying to avoid waste was a great video idea! I love the idea of zero waste and i myself am trying to do anything I can to switch to be more waste free. Not sure how far I can go with it but things like making my own oat milk and cooking my own beans, and doing what I can not to waste plastic feel like great things as they are. It's a good feeling to do what you can.

Concerning the plastic issue: A friend of mine unpackages everything plastic wrapped at the supermarket and leaves it all in the bins there to make a point and hopefully raise awareness. Not much of a big deal but awareness to many people is the start of everything. (Also it makes the supermarket have to deal with all the waste and maybe rethink their plastic wrapping habits).
    Cheers ya all xx

Great work once again. Representing True North Strong and Free. Loving the content, escpecially the awareness of soil health. It has so much power if we very simply turn it around. The soil biota and gut biota are not seperate. However the news is positive for the "good" soil bacteria, fungi, organisms, etc only attract more "good" friends, and with exponential capabilities. You would enjoy learning from youtube Dr. Elaine Ingham. Onward and upward!

I buy boneless chicken breast and pork loin for $1.50 a pound. I buy dozen eggs for ~$1.10 which weigh about 24 ounces so it's about $0.72 per pound for eggs. I also can get 15oz can of wild caught mackerel for $1 each at a dollar store. Meat is cheap, no excuses. Meat is also far more nutrient dense and calorie dense compared to the vast majority of plants. I do also eat plenty of fruits and veggies (including homemade fermented veggies), and I live a fasting focused lifestyle.

cathy bird I Agree, but the universal healthcare in Canada is horrible. The only good healthcare there is the private system where your dollar is valued. There are people waiting 6 months just to get an MRI. Many take vacations here to America and get their medical treatment because it takes less time and costs less. Canada is a great place, but socialized anything is a recipe for disaster in my mind. If you can't tell I'm a conservative vegan.

Colony Co. sells produce bags I purchased from Amazon and use for bulk items and veg/fruit. Bulk stores like Costco will be harder since those foods come prepackaged...I’d say go for the least packaged (single wrapper) and finding a coop that sells braggs/soy sauce/vinegar in bulk where u fill your own jars - which reminds me - buying a huge amount of bulk foods online is one way to reduce packing (like 1 gallon of braggs as opposed to several 10 oz bottles) and 5 lb of beans as opposed to 1 package of lentils. I hope that helps!

How do you break that to people without making them feel uncomfortable during their time visiting you?

A good rule of thumb I learned from Food Network in regards to storing nuts and seeds is ‘Nuts have oil, and oil can spoil.’ Essentially they all should be stored in the fridge.
In regards to the plastic question, I absolutely struggle with that as well. I do 90% of my shopping at Trader Joe’s because they are the most affordable, but it seems that all of their produce is in plastic. If I go to another store, I pay a dollar extra per item to get it plastic free. Its super frustrating.

Hey Derek, could you show us in a future video exactly how much your grocery hauls cost to lay the misconception of healthy-foods-being-too-expensive-to-live-off-of-for-the-average-consumer to rest lol Thanks! -Elijah Nora from Laredo, TX

Just curious...don't you have farmer markets in Canada? I live in Italy and in my city, for example, we have one in each neighborhood. It's easy to buy fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables that are cheap and not sealed in plastic boxes. Great video as usual ;)

Hey, thanks great video! Yeah the plastic is a problem here too (UK), but a zero waste shop has just opened in my town and we have a really good health food shop that is also trying to reduce plastic (really lucky) but even so, fresh greens are always in a plastic bag! I also had a woodland walk today and randomly found a swing someone put up with rope and a (rather uncomfortable) tree branch seat! :)

#AMM Hi Derek, I twisted my ankle severely. What is the best food to recover quickly? (I'm already on a whole foods plant based diet).
Could you also show the best exercises to build strength and stabilise the ankle once the ligaments are healed?
Thank you in advance for answering the questions!

Hey Derek, in a serious crisis here..
Got a HTMA done (hair/tissue/mineral analysis) and I’m extremely overloaded with copper. Informed them of my plant based diet, and they are saying it’s a major contributor to the buildup. (I’ve been super drained of energy and getting so bad I can barely get by day to day) and it’s apparently been accumulating my entire life.
The recommendations to eliminate high copper foods and needing to start eating some red meat and animal protein again (dairy nd eggs included) I realllly am against that, but due to the current condition I have, it seems there’s no other choice. I would really like you to talk about this in the next video.
    Thanks 🙏,
    Logan

Hi guys !! I love the videos & all the info that I learn from them. Thanks for doing what you do. So, I have topic that never seems to stop pestering me Lol Please help !! Carbs, carbs, carbs !! Everybody is always criticizing me over my carbohydrate intake. Its ridiculous. Just tonight I made your lentil curry recipe & posted my meal on FB with the macro info & I instantly got attacked about the 125 grams of carbs 🤦‍♂️ "You're killing me with these carbs" "I don't even consume 125 in a week" ...keto this & keto that. I just don't know how to show them that carbs are good & important.

Plastic: It can be really hard when it comes to buying groceries. I went shopping yesterday and every single item I had (wasn't buying fresh food) was in a package. Some things can't be grown yourself, bought from bins in bulk stores or put in your own produce bags. Hopefully someone smarter than me will come up with something in the long-term.

does whole unpeeled hemp seed is better than peeled? I think peeled hemp seed oxidize faster that's why you need to store them in fridge.
