      I hope they manage to pull off everything. Seems to have great potential to become a huge hit.

      Using a portable battery on the Quest consumer version 1 causes that headset to get hot and heat is bad for the battery and kills its lifespan, it would be great if they found a way to kill the built in battery while you have a portable battery plugged in, and kill that damn screen door effect and everyone would be really happy with vr I think.

    My recommendation would be to make the battery to be easily swappable (so you can have 2 or 3 even or allow for 3rd party ones back there. On the other hand😲 Wow! I wanted a battery as a counter weight since quest 1 days for weight distribution, and as soon as you showed the unit I thought 🤔 side magnet covers would be awesome 😎 then you showed it. I would get it for PCVR and the counter weight feature... Standalone would be a great bonus for me. Looks like they got pretty far already, and the fact that they invited you with no restrictions says alot. I'm down for that... I hope they take as long as necessary to iron out most bugs. Ultraleap has had this hand tracking tech (their Orion API) since 2016. I’m absolutely astonished that they haven’t partnered with any big brands AND that said big brands have such terrible hand tracking solutions compared to leap’s 5-year-old tech. Nice to see them finally properly integrated into a headset. OGs remember velcroing a leap motion controller to the front of an oculus CV1 to play the 3 supported demos

    • @tiredlocke

      Still have my leap motion sitting on my desk after digging it out a few months ago to remind myself that I wasn't crazy and that it really is better than the Quest 2 hand tracking. Excited to see their tech finally go beyond a neat demo.

    I’m really on the edge about this product, I love a lot of what I’m seeing and I feel like I should encourage companies like Lynx to push for an open and transparent future for XR, but even with the money they’ve raised I can’t tell how confident to be with how their team will deliver the hardware on time and an OS and make it so developers can use it. That’s a really tall order. Do you guys think they’re gonna hit the mark?

    • @cheshire682
      @cheshire682 2 роки тому +15

      I believe so.
      A reassuring thing is knowing about the composition of their team, among which many veterans from other headset hardware companies like StarVR
      A lot of their work is integrating together existing & proven state of the art technologies from ultraleap, qualcom etc
      So much less risk with building from scratch
      But I think beyond that, there’s the open values aspect you mentioned
      We’ve seen the VR community curse the fact that Facebook is taking over followed by other tech giants, fir months & months
      And now a company like Lynx has decided to take the risk they weren’t obligated to by going consumer instead of the more secure enterprise market, all to influence the future of XR in a better direction
      It up to us, the community now, to follow words with action

    • @scottr.looney1774
      @scottr.looney1774 2 роки тому +3

      my feeling is that Stan and Lynx team will be more transparent and communicative than say Deca has been with their DecaGear. but there are three significant headwinds that they are fighting against:
      1. chip shortage possibly not likely to ease up until 2022 at the earliest. again they have a good relationship with Qualcomm so they may have lined out enough to get through the KS. but it might be that something unexpected happens. if a particular chip or subchip isn't in stock there could be a long wait.
      2. fluctuating power outages in China are delaying all kinds of production from factories. not likely to be solved anytime soon but doesn't affect all provinces all the time.
      3. Covid-19 - variations could muck up the timeline as well.
      on the positive side Stan has said that as they get closer to production they will have a significant quantity of employees travel to Taiwan to personally oversee the production process and QA the units coming out of the factories in China. i have faith that he's going to do his best and his team are very experienced as well. it's not exactly two guys in a garage who have no idea about manufacturing products. but there will likely be delays of one kind or another. i don't think they will take a year but it might slip by a couple of months.

    • @alectrem
      @alectrem 2 роки тому +1

      @@scottr.looney1774 even slipping by a couple of months couple really screw them, this product’s place in the market is already a hard sell with quest taking up the consumer market, AR apps already being bulit for other ecosystems since this is a new platform entirely and other new headsets coming out from valve and oculus. I love what they’re doing, but if they’re any later to market they’re going to look seriously unattractive to VR focused consumers with the resolution, price, and brand new ecosystem. I want lynx to win, it’s just that the odds are stacked against them - even if they get headsets out on time, they still need to sell enough to make newer versions almost immediately, or at least sell enough to get their investors to help them. The price of a unit on kickstarter, as much as i want one, is too much money for me personally if there’s a decent chance it shows up super late or no headset shows up at all. ugh, please convince me to buy one!!

    • @scottr.looney1774
      @scottr.looney1774 2 роки тому +3

      @@alectrem well the way i think about it Oculus was a startup that came out of nowhere and proved that there was a market out there for VR, where nobody thought there was. Magic Leap got a lot of folks excited about the possibility of mixed reality (MR) at the consumer level and got tons of funding, which led to a lot of innovative design, even if the product itself didn't succeed as a consumer device. if Lynx can show that they have a better product in certain ways that could be enough to get funding to continue. i know the market is tight and yes delays aren't going to help them, but they do have better hand tracking than most, currently - esp in their price range.
      a KS backing always includes a certain amount of risk, and this is no exception. and i've already backed a product that will ship late due to Covid (Tilt5 glasses) so i'm aware of the risks. but i do believe in Stan and i think he's assembled a team of veterans in the XR field that just might have built a better mousetrap. and do NOT underestimate the desire for a FB alternative. HTC just whiffed with the Flow which won't go anywhere IMO, and Aero is way out of the pocketbook range. as for Deckard it's certainly enticing, depending on price point, but i have seen no information that shows this product to be ready in time to compete with any upcoming Oculus product. it may not be here for another year or it may arrive anytime. but still, throwing up a bunch of cheap VR headsets to compare entirely misses the point for what the Lynx is likely to really good at doing which is MR based interaction. and yes that's in a nascent form at the consumer level, but you have to start somewhere. and in terms of MR, no device comes close to it price wise.
      if what you're looking for is a VR alternative to FB then maybe this isn't the only game in town, and it might not be the best product. but for AR/MR it seems to be well priced. now all we need to find out is if there's a market at the consumer level.

They came out with a product that seems like it will be more polished and feature rich at launch than Vive flow and with the ability for it to adapt to different types of use cases all for the same price as a huge company that released a tone deaf product. If the screens were a little higher resolution I'd say this is perfect for what it's intended to be.

    A game "a la" pokemon go for Augmented Reality would be pretty damn cool. If headsets could get light enough to wear while actually running, I could see something like at the beginning where the coins were being collected as being a good way to get some people motivated to exercise again by "gamifying exercise". It would also be neat to put gps into the headsets, and then you could track your jogs. On the display it could show a red line on your path if you're behind pace, or a green line if you were ahead of your normal pace... just some thoughts. But it would be so cool. Another idea, so that screens wouldn't get scorched by the sun, they could put a pressure plate on the face covering or something so that it only opens up an iris door when your face is inside the headset. Even a mechanical switch you could toggle would be nice, but people are lazy, so I say automate it. Of course, that adds complexity though...

    If you can adjust the position of the lenses then this absolutely needs to be done on the outside of the headset rather than requiring you to do it when you're not wearing the headset or whatever. This is the same issue with the Quest 2, where you can't set the lenses while wearing it, so you keep going back and forth taking it on and off until you figure out what setting works for you, and it's just a total pain in the ass and design fail imo. A simple dial or two on the outside top of side of the headset for moving the lenses would just make far more sense in every way--we had this on first-gen headsets so it's really annoying that any more recent headsets don't have it--until we get to the point where the lenses are self adjusting using eye tracking and the like, as the new Varjo Areo does.

    Very interesting. A lot of technology packed inside the headset. I like everything about it but there seems to be a lot of work left to do and I'm not sure if they can make it in time. Still fingers crossed and I'm curious what will be the end product.

    This could be the Quest alternative that we've all been waiting for, providing it can get the app support which I imagine won't be too difficult with OpenXR.
    The lenses look interesting but I do wonder how glass's users (such as my self) will get on, and what the screen resolution is going to be like considering its split into 4 to make the lenses work.

    I have a WMR (no base stations) headset, and tracking for Steam games is fine. My headset ranks the worst in tracking when hands are at full extension from the headset (up close the tracking is as good or better than most) -- at full range the variance is only about a centimeter, which really doesn't amount to much, so I wouldn't worry about the hand tracking in Steam.

    That's a shame that you weren't able to see more, I've been following this for over a year and I really wanted to know if this could replace a tablet (In terms of convenient video viewing, browsing, messaging) and being a VR headset with handtracking.
    Really wanted to know about the capability of the software and how they plan to set a standard for hand controls.

    • @mijimepiero7628
      @mijimepiero7628 2 роки тому

      @@collinlohmann5592 Yeah but I want to know if I can use the Lynx as an, essentially, independent computer.
      The flow are glasses connected to a phone and a battery pack i.e. not an independent device; my expectation of the Lynx is a what AR has been advertised as for a while, a computer that I can control without physically touching a keyboard, mouse or controller while still being able to see my environment.
      There apparently isn't software that's ready to be shown for that specific case which disappoints me and makes me think that I'm gonna have to stream stuff to the device using virtual desktop or something.

    The problem is their supply chain.Can they get the materials,and most important,the chips to build their units and fulfill their orders.I really hope they do,because right now the standalone VR market is ruled by the Oculus and it would be great for some serious competition to come along.

    looks great, but I really wish they were doing what valve is and went with a x86 main cpu. As it is with their own operating system they're just going to be another console that you have to hope games you like get ported to or they'll get exclusives. Hopefully more headsets like this will at least enable the split rendering functionality valve is trying to create for their headset so maybe these other headsets can work with the steamdeck.

      Most likely not without hacks similar to Reverb G2. If VR gaming is your thing then compatible controllers are sold separately. By default this is more a damn good AR device with handtracking.

    It is nice, BUT....... a HMD without Software (you can use during your day) is unusable. I don't want to play with it, but i want to use it as a Videoplayer, a Navigationsystem, a Picture-App, etc. If this is not included in the software, than this product is only for developers..... and i think, they should say that!

      well Stan has said that they are in talks with Sidequest to use their store, or possibly to create their own if that option doesn't work. also with more development fast moving towards standardizing on Open XR i think porting to other platforms like this will be much easier. but Stan is keenly aware that a store will be needed by launch.

    • @alex15095

      The lens does increase the perceived resolution in the middle and makes the headset thinner. As I understand it, the multi-channel design is even more light-efficient than a pancake design like the one in the Vive Flow, while being similarly compact
