MOGARRAZ. Village of portraits / La aldea de los retratos
Mogarraz is a small village that is located in the province of Salamanca. It is immersed in the thick forests of the Sierra de Francia.
Mogarraz has a beautiful network of alleys and passageways that will transport you to another era if you get lost in them. On its facades we will see numerous shields that belong to lineages of great antiquity, we can even see some of the Inquisition.
This village stands out for its mountain houses in which its typical frameworks of wood, stone and adobe attract attention. Although the most unusual thing about Mogarraz is the exhibition of portraits of its neighbors which are located on the facades of the houses where they lived.

Mogarraz es un pequeño pueblo que se encuentra ubicado en la provincia de Salamanca. Está inmerso entre los espesos bosques de la Sierra de Francia, que lo aísla de las grandes ciudades del resto de la provincia.
Mogarraz cuenta con un precioso entramado de callejuelas y pasadizos que te transportarán a otra época si te pierdes por ellos. En sus fachadas veremos numerosos escudos que pertenecen a linajes de gran antigüedad, incluso podremos ver algunos de la Inquisición.
El pueblo destaca por sus casas serranas en la que llaman la atención sus típicos entramados de madera, piedra y adobe. Aunque lo que más sorprende de Mogarraz es la exposición de retratos de sus vecinos y que se encuentran situados en las fachadas de las casas donde habitaron.

Estuvimos en este abril de 2023, pasamos unos días maravillosos, merece la pena perderse por sus calles, al atardecer tomábamos una cañita en el bar de la plaza y conversábamos con la gente tan estupenda de ese pueblo, allí nos alojamos, hicimos la ruta del camino del agua dos veces, !que bonito!! Visitamos otros pueblos como la Alberca, Sequeros, Miranda del Castañar, San Martín de Castañar... Subimos hasta la Peña de Francia. Fue unos días preciosos
Estoy de acuerdo contigo, toda la Sierra de Francia es asombrosa, con pueblos muy hermosos y llenos de encanto como el caso de Mogarraz. Espero volver pronto por la zona y seguir grabando reconocidos porque merece mucho la pena. Te invito a que disfrutes de mi recorrido por La Alberca, que también puedes encontrarlo en mi canal.

I agree with you, spending a few days in a secluded village like this and living its quiet lifestyle must be very relaxing. Just when I filmed the tour, village seemed deserted but as time went by it began to have more life in the streets (I hope it was not because of me 😄). I'm glad you liked it. Muy impresionante este pueblo. Jamás habría imaginado que en España había un pueblo así, y si me lo hubieran dicho no lo habría creído. Muy original, tanto por la antigüedad como por los retratos. Aunque a mi me daría un poco de mal rollo caminar por ahí, con todos esos retratos de muertos mirándome y diciendo "que haces aquí, extranjero?".
Me alegro que te haya gustado el pueblo. La verdad que visto de esa manera podría ser una buena localización para una película de terror jejeje Seguramente no todos los que aparecen en los retratos estén muertos así que para los del pueblo también debe ser un fastidio que los turistas se te queden mirando para ver si eres alguno de los del retrato.

Typical castilian village, the iberian spanish sausage, chorizo, morcilla, han bellota etc so delicius.
Yeah, you are right. Iberian ham is a typical product of this area. It is a genuinely delicious.

What a wonderful city Mograss is!
I really like the cobblestone alleys.
Surrounded by buildings that make you feel like you are walking in the movie world, it is much more attractive than the state-of-the-art city.😆

Me ha encantado, un pueblo lleno de encanto, es la primera vez que oigo hablar de él y te agradezco mucho que nos lo hayas enseñado porque es muy bonito. Las calles empedradas, las casas antiguas, y la original idea de las fotografías, nunca había visto nada parecido 👍
Hola! Me alegra que te guste el pueblo. Es normal que no hayas oido hablar de él, es poco conocido incluso entre los que somos de aquí. Se trata de un pueblo muy pequeño y al estar al lado de La Alberca me da la sensación de que esta de alguna manera eclipsado por ella. Como dices la iniciativa de los retratos es muy original, no sólo porque distingue al pueblo sino que además rinde homenaje a sus habitantes.

Wonderful tour of this incredible Spanish village! So interesting that is has 650 portraits of the deceased inhabitants through all the village!! So so interesting. Never saw something like this. It's a masterpiece. I couldn't help but admire the portrait on the exterior wall of the building. It's a special gallery that I can't see anywhere. The whole town is an art museum. Are these portraits of a particular artist's work? Who are the main characters of these portraits? Are they resident? I have a lot of questions. I could feel the originality of the bricks that made up the walls of the house. I could see some wells in the video. Are these drinking water? can solve my own questions after watching this video. It would be better if you could give me an answer.

Florencio Maíllo Cascón is the author of the portraits. He is an artist born in Mogarraz.
People who appear in the portraits are the ancient inhabitants of the village and their portraits are placed on the facades of the houses where they lived. Surely some of them still live.
Regarding the fountains and wells, Mogarraz is a mountain town. I don't know for sure, but it must be drinking water from the mountains.

Alejandro Martín took a picture in 1967 to help provide identification cards to his neighbors. Later, these photographs were recreated as paintings by Florencio Maéllo.
