I really think football coverage in the uk needs more trained sports journalists (the kind with knowledge about obscure lower and international league teams, able to pronounce foreign names, not just the stars.) Most of the ex players are blatantly hypocritical and make no attempt to describe the gameplay. And instead roll out the same few superlatives in between distracting anecdotes. There are a few goid ones but coverage is not as good as it used to be.

When English football pundits talk about the English team vs any other team there's always this cocky bias. Sometimes it's getting quite annoying because after a while it simply sounds exactly like what Modric described: they are not giving enough credit or respect to the opposition; talking of them as if the opposition surely can't be that much of a big deal. I really think football coverage in the uk needs more trained sports journalists (the kind with knowledge about obscure lower and international league teams, able to pronounce foreign names, not just the stars.)

The pundits were in total denial. What Modric said was true. The english media and teams really do believe their own hype. Which then leads their teams to underestimate non english opponents. In the end they lose the match. The best example of this was when RM won the UCL last season. We're RM the best team? Definitely not. Did Rm deserve it? Sure they did, because they never gave up. The english teams underestimated them. When RM finally won, the pundits were like "oh, they are the luckiest team ever, bla bla bla". It was luck and not sheer determination and respect for the opponents. The plain truth was that the English teams are superior and have technically capable players, but their downfall was that they underestimated RM. Thats why RM made those comebacks and won the UCL.

Give an example of them claiming that England were favourites to win, explain how they forced any of their opinions on anyone, explain how they forced their opinions over to Croatia.
They consider themselves to be about 4th to 6th best, which is where they are ranked based on performance. They could win, and they should make it to semi-finals which they do.
Nobody underestimated Croatia, it's just a close game and could go either way. It's like losing on penalties and saying it's because they were cocky.
