In 2024 there's no replacement for the ‘Once the worst signing ’....we say Xavi and Iniesta are ahead of Modric but the thing is more offensively.... Modric is an allrounder, something Xavi and Iniesta were not
He was the best ever at reading the game, being where he's needed the most, controlling the pace of the game and moving the ball around the field in a way which forces the opposing team to expose the vulnerabilities in their defense.
While i agree this might sound controversial, but, i see Modric as a synthesis of Xavi and Iniesta. He has both of their strengths with silky smooth passing, cold blooded dribling and a keen ability to dictate both the tempo and style of the game. Moreover, he has an out of box shooting sense that can hunt the keepers when they least expect it. He is vicious as hell and hardworking maestro that can do everything a midfielder required to do. Versatile talent that can fit into any side. Although, it should be mentioned that his duo had been completed with Kross and they have dominated a lot of midfielders during their heyday. Now with all that said, Xavi and Iniesta remains as the perfect duo the footballing world had ever seen (for now at least), but if there is one player who can be considered greater than them, it should be only Modric for his complete command of the midfield and ability to be there at the crutch moments. For all their greatness, Barcelona did not manage to won consecutive wins in CL and i think this little genius here is the key difference in Madrid's eventual superiority in their runs.
If I had to chose one thing that separates Modrić from other good and excelent midfielders- it would be his awarenes , natural understanding of the game and positioning. Well... those are three things :). Often times it seems like he sees the field and all the players from a birds perspective, and it was always like that, even in his days at Dinamo Zagreb.
Luka Modric is one of the greatest midfielders of his generation and at the age of 38, he has shown no signs of his age. He is definitely in the same tier as the likes of Xavi Iniesta and Zidane. Getting to where he is today, he’s had to overcome a lot of challenges because he had a difficult childhood, during his time at Tottenham, there were doubts as to whether or not he could handle the physicality and demanding nature of the premier league and many football fans have known this for a while now, in his debut season at Real Madrid he was voted as the worst La Liga signing. That’s right he was seen as a massive flop and at the age of 27, he hadn’t won a major trophy in the top 5 leagues in Europe, and 11 years later at Real Madrid he has accumulated 26 trophies he has won everything there is to win at club level, he’s a 6time champions league winner and he’s also won a Ballon Dor even if it was very contending. Hey, he went from worst signing of the season to being a Ballon Dor winner and what he’s done with the Croatia national team has been nothing short of exceptional as given the population of the country, he took them to a World Cup final in 2018 where he was the best player in the tournament and has taken them very far in a lot of major tournaments while also having good teammates around him. He’s very impressive when it comes to his technical ability vision composure passing and has an incredible work rate without the ball. Modric is so well rounded in a sense that from an attacking perspective he’s able to pick out passes out of nowhere and can do a trivela pass from his own half while also tracking back to cover ground and this was a notable aspect of his game when he was in his prime. He is absolutely in the conversation when we wanna talk about “who’s the greatest midfielder of all time”, but for me, I think that Xavi and Iniesta are slightly better than Modric. In this debate there’s been a bit of recency bias and people consistently use the longevity argument, I get it Modric has gotten better in his 30s and has played some of the best football of his career in recent years, since Xavi and Iniesta retired at the age of 34, many people have forgotten that they both had an edge over him for a long period of time and when they were all playing, he wasn’t on the same level as them, that’s for a different conversation. Anyways he’s one of a kind and he could potentially spend another season at Real Madrid and with him unlikely to ever play in a major tournament for Croatia ever again, I advise people to enjoy every moment of Modric’s last piece of magic.
He is the most successful and decorated player in the history of Real Madrid, his numbers are crazy and it will be very very hard for someone to brake his records 👑 Rarely in the football history
The most consistent player of all times. I cant remember him entering a bad spell ever in his career, always played at top level, from start to finish, and he still at top level but cant produce full 90' because of cardio at his age compared to younger players, but he still runs miles every game he playes. Just amazing, cant talk about greatest midfielders of all time without mentioning Luka Modric.
He's not too far from his prime at the moment either, but people focus too much on his age, unfortunately. Even today, when he plays, he changes the game. Even when he only plays 20 minutes, those 20 minutes are usually Real's best in the match. If the man says he feels physically better than ever, how about believing him and letting him play more?
