How to manage Snakes on a Permaculture Farm? (English)

  • We are often asked the question, "What about snakes on the farm? How do you deal with them? "
A farm is a habitat for all species, and the land belongs as much to the snakes as it belongs to us. That is the concept of a fair share in permaculture! Not only to share one's farm produce with other humans & species but also to share the space with other species. After all, where are wild animals expected to go and live, if every inch of land is occupied by humans? After all, nature has not designed for the land to be owned by any species. So it is the responsibility of us humans, to provide a habitat for all species.
When we design our farm, we must leave enough space for wildlife to exist. This space is called the Wild Life zone. It is an area that humans rarely go into, so we do not plant any crops in this area. When humans do not frequent an area, wild animals quickly recognize it as a safe zone and start living there. This area is planted with native trees and shrubs, so that wild animals have shelter and habitat.
Of course, there will be occasions when snakes and other animals come into the other zones of your farm. But when they see or hear a human, they will usually retrace their steps and go back to their wildlife zone. It is our terrible habit, to chase them towards this zone and kill them. This is not required, as the wildlife zone provides a safe space for them and us both. It is our ethical task to not kill them, as this planet belongs to them as well.
These snakes also play an important role in the ecosystem. They keep many of the other pests (like rats) in check and maintain the balance of the species. In turn, they also are kept in check by birds and mongoose, etc..
When you provide a space for snakes, like the wildlife zone, the conflict between humans and snakes is reduced dramatically. We have been working on the farm for a decade now, and have very little conflict with snakes. In fact, in the past, we used to feel creeped out or repulsed at the sight of a snake. Today, we are left in awe and wonder at its beauty and take a few photographs before allowing it to slither back into the wildlife zone.
We are living closely with nature today, and learning to appreciate the beauty in all the species, the ugliest of which are perhaps us humans.

    1. Using "payal" that emits sound for girls... or hitting the ground (snakes being on their belly feel the vibration on the ground) with stick as we walk also warns snakes to move out... So that both us & the snake are safe.
    2. Carrying a stick also helps us move a snake when we spot it too close to us.

Your words felt like a heart-to-heart conversation on a better future for our wildlife. It scares us thinking how we will live alongside our wildlife, but steadily as we make space for them in our minds, we will surely be able to make space for them physically around us.

very true, we have been living on the farmland from more than 2 years now and so many snakes visit our property and they are very timid creatures. They will just go away at the sight of us. Our chickens alert us when ever a snake is around and we just go and tell the snake to go. We have mostly cobras here. They have never harmed us or our pets till today.

Really good advice, in my 5 acre farm I have made a forest with over two thousand trees in approximately half acre…. This will be my wild zone where birds and animals and plants will grow according to nature with hardly any human interaction! We have saw scaled vipers in my farm and some other snakes as well. Recently one managed to get into my car 😳 which I managed to rescue. 🇵🇰❤️

I have a snake in my yard as well as chipmunks, hawks, squirrels. The main snake eats the poisonous snakes and keeps us safe but I always look out for him. When we had to cut back a bush to promote it's growth it was the home of the guardian snake and I came across him sunning himself in a patch where we don't walk but I stood and admired him. I was so happy that our place was safe for him and he was keeping us safe. I'm not in India, I'm in Atlanta Georgia in an urban environment but our place is a safe space for all. I've had to overcome the fear and seen their beauty and give thanks for their protection.

    1. Plant tulsi or other snake repel plant at boundary of farm.
    2. Pet 2-3 dogs so if they see snake they will bark and aware you.
    3. Take information of which gener of snakes generally saw in that area. So you can generalize zehrila snake..
    4. Take information where near by this snakes antidote available.
    5. Walk with danda when you pass through jaha bohot saare patte gire ho, and Danda zameen ko thokte thokte chalo so snake can aware and move for safe place to avoid conflict.

Modern monoculture farming says all other plants are weeds to be exterminated by herbicides and all insects, amphibians, birds, animals are pests which we get rid of with pesticides. We produce green deserts. More than that, we allow invasive species from other regions to get introduced and spread unchecked. So the ones which really are weeds and pests for a local region, we introduce them and let them take over. How unfair is this?

I say carry bamboo pole so if a snake is in the way, you can push him to the side.

Always carry a stick and thump it on the ground as you walk. Wear closed shoes. Don't walk into tall grasses. Be aware of your surroundings and movements.
