How to manage Snakes on a Permaculture Farm? (English)

- We are often asked the question, "What about snakes on the farm? How do you deal with them? "
A farm is a habitat for all species, and the land belongs as much to the snakes as it belongs to us. That is the concept of a fair share in permaculture! Not only to share one's farm produce with other humans & species but also to share the space with other species. After all, where are wild animals expected to go and live, if every inch of land is occupied by humans? After all, nature has not designed for the land to be owned by any species. So it is the responsibility of us humans, to provide a habitat for all species.
When we design our farm, we must leave enough space for wildlife to exist. This space is called the Wild Life zone. It is an area that humans rarely go into, so we do not plant any crops in this area. When humans do not frequent an area, wild animals quickly recognize it as a safe zone and start living there. This area is planted with native trees and shrubs, so that wild animals have shelter and habitat.
Of course, there will be occasions when snakes and other animals come into the other zones of your farm. But when they see or hear a human, they will usually retrace their steps and go back to their wildlife zone. It is our terrible habit, to chase them towards this zone and kill them. This is not required, as the wildlife zone provides a safe space for them and us both. It is our ethical task to not kill them, as this planet belongs to them as well.
These snakes also play an important role in the ecosystem. They keep many of the other pests (like rats) in check and maintain the balance of the species. In turn, they also are kept in check by birds and mongoose, etc..
When you provide a space for snakes, like the wildlife zone, the conflict between humans and snakes is reduced dramatically. We have been working on the farm for a decade now, and have very little conflict with snakes. In fact, in the past, we used to feel creeped out or repulsed at the sight of a snake. Today, we are left in awe and wonder at its beauty and take a few photographs before allowing it to slither back into the wildlife zone.
We are living closely with nature today, and learning to appreciate the beauty in all the species, the ugliest of which are perhaps us humans.

Very Well Said,
May All Being enjoy, Peace, Happiness & Harmony.
PS: Human Spirit is infinite but it stuck here and there.
1. Using "payal" that emits sound for girls... or hitting the ground (snakes being on their belly feel the vibration on the ground) with stick as we walk also warns snakes to move out... So that both us & the snake are safe.
2. Carrying a stick also helps us move a snake when we spot it too close to us.
So , that's why girls wear Payal?🤔
Wow didn't knew this about payal..
Nice information 👍
@@KK-gc5lj The answer given seems logical. But it is also said payal made of chandi, keeps the body cool, hence chandi is worn in lower half of body, even toe rings by married women.
Manisha, this is one of the best videos I have watched on holistic living/farming ... in fact we humans are encroaching on their land. Give space to snakes and all other animals/birds. Great!!
Just get a cat
Your words felt like a heart-to-heart conversation on a better future for our wildlife. It scares us thinking how we will live alongside our wildlife, but steadily as we make space for them in our minds, we will surely be able to make space for them physically around us.
Your initial comment about the artificial idea of "land ownership" thrust upon an innocent earth, brought tears to my eyes
🙏
Got tears in my eyes for your wisdom.
So refreshing to see someone not speak ill of snakes but in their favor. Thank you do much. Snakes in my opinion are one of the most fascinating creatures and unfortunately the most misunderstood as well. Thank you for your thoughts and actions, more power to you!
She was neither favouring nor opposing snakes, she was explaining mother nature
You are really educating us, on how to live in nature with other species. Thank you so much Manisha. You are bringing positive change in our perspectives. My humble hats off to your journey
So nice of you
As always, ethical and clear thoughts beautifully expressed. Thank you!
So Beautifully explained. Thank you for the reminder about the fair share of the land.
very true, we have been living on the farmland from more than 2 years now and so many snakes visit our property and they are very timid creatures. They will just go away at the sight of us. Our chickens alert us when ever a snake is around and we just go and tell the snake to go. We have mostly cobras here. They have never harmed us or our pets till today.
How do you communicate with the snake and advise them to go. Please do share those tips
Don't go by view counts...it is quality stuff always from Ananda..Always pleasing to eyes and ears. 😊
Exactly... Thank you for sharing. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for listening
Really good advice, in my 5 acre farm I have made a forest with over two thousand trees in approximately half acre…. This will be my wild zone where birds and animals and plants will grow according to nature with hardly any human interaction! We have saw scaled vipers in my farm and some other snakes as well. Recently one managed to get into my car 😳 which I managed to rescue. 🇵🇰❤️
I have a snake in my yard as well as chipmunks, hawks, squirrels. The main snake eats the poisonous snakes and keeps us safe but I always look out for him. When we had to cut back a bush to promote it's growth it was the home of the guardian snake and I came across him sunning himself in a patch where we don't walk but I stood and admired him. I was so happy that our place was safe for him and he was keeping us safe. I'm not in India, I'm in Atlanta Georgia in an urban environment but our place is a safe space for all. I've had to overcome the fear and seen their beauty and give thanks for their protection.
Thank you for sharing that!
Wow mam.... Thankyou so much for such a great Awareness- I too love nature and snakes but this was new learning for me.... Such beautiful thinking that how can they buy land for their living which will make anyone keep on thinking 🤔
Your approach is so refreshing. Thank you very much for sharing. May God bless you🙏.
Well said !!
Thank you Manisha for clearing off my mental block of presence of snakes in my farm... I'm planning to go for natural farming and cAme to know that in such a practice snakes are also play an important role in naturally keeping in control the rodent population...But scared of the very idea of their presence...With your video..I understood that we can co-exist without threatening each other by exclusively having a zone/habitate for them...I no more am scared of them...Thank you once again ma...
So glad to hear this
I see my mother nature in you mam.keep on goin⁶
The fair share notion is very wise indeed. Wildlife doesn’t ask for anything more than its fair share, so we must respect that and operate accordingly.
Absolutely
Very elegant way to think about the environment.. very nice.
Excellent video... u r really a pathfinder for many of us to follow your steps... clearing all critical doubts with utmost clarity... Hats off to you mam...
All the best
Hats off !!! Manisha ji. Very well explained.

Really.. your word is so clear about what we have forgotten & say these is mine.. True. I don.t have any Agri land, if I have a land like how u have, will live a space as wild zone.. Sure..
Mam your explanation is very nice... Your thought about nature is very kind...
Such an important message, and as always beautifully conveyed.
Beautifully said ..
beautifully said
Glad you think so!
Well said madam. Planet it's not our own. It is sharing by lacks of species. So we have to respect and leave space for them.
Beautiful words of wisdom ♥
Hello Manisha May God bless you all beautiful souls at Aanandaa. I'm a new subscriber. I have been watching you since long. But today you really touched my heart. And here I'm. Love you "ALL".

Well said mam, beautiful thinking with kindness.
So nice
Thank you for sharing your journey. Very inspiring!
Wow...
Fantastic message.
Your channel is very inspiring .....thank you
Very commendable perception towards nature. Hats off Madam. 👍👍🙏🙏.
Super ma'am... wonderful video.. thank you!!! Just curious, May I know how much space have you designated for wildlife at your farm?
Greatly explained ma'am. It would be my dream to one day visit your farm !
Lovely thought 🙏🏼👌🏻👍
Nice info ! Clear ...
Lovely @ great thoughts 🫡
But from my side..
1. Plant tulsi or other snake repel plant at boundary of farm.
2. Pet 2-3 dogs so if they see snake they will bark and aware you.
3. Take information of which gener of snakes generally saw in that area. So you can generalize zehrila snake..
4. Take information where near by this snakes antidote available.
5. Walk with danda when you pass through jaha bohot saare patte gire ho, and Danda zameen ko thokte thokte chalo so snake can aware and move for safe place to avoid conflict.
6. Wear industry glows up to ankle while chopping branches.. And also wear industry shoes up to knee.
7. Unki bhi jahag hai, unhe bhi jeene ka haq hai, what ma'am said.
Great advice! Thank you

Great information, god bless you
Lovely speech...
One of the ways to handle would be have few predators like cats in the farm. It is important to keep the population in check, otherwise it can be dangerous
Great Great Great mam....👌👌👌👌👌👌
Ati uttam
Well done, you have the right attitude towards snakes and wildlife.
(Just a note regarding the background music, it is too loud, makes it hard to hear your thoughtful comments).
Noted.
Very nice message.
Wonderful..👍
Thank you, this helps!
Good morning. Nice video.
Agree wholeheartedly. Small addition if I may, instead of taking ownership of land humans should take stewardship. Thank you.
nice informative video
Fair share👏👏👏
If possible post the pics of snakes in ur farm mam. The snake in the thumbnail is Bronze back tree snake, non venoumous.
Snakes have a big role to play..leave it alone..om nama Shivaya
Manisha,I do similar things at my farm,it's true snakes never charge at you rather they panick and flee at opposite direction, the mere thought scares you ,villagers where I stay simply kills any snake that are found on their way,I dissuade and stop Killing in my presence, hopefully they will understand
Thats really nice
Hi. It's so refreshing to see the permaculture philosophy in farming. Communicating to farmers against using chemical pesticides as they are in a vicious trap ... How to communicate about the ecosystems way of pest control..
Lovely thought and i vibe with all that you said. Well done for highlighting upon such a beautiful thought. I also like the idea of the wild life zone on our farms. One day, when i own a farm, I will put your idea into practice.
I understand, so you DON"T have to deal with snakes. Easy talking then.
Nice thoughts ,
Great 🙏
Thanks
This world has enough resources to fulfill everyone's need but not enough for one man's greed!
Could you make us a video which explains the types and varieties of plants/trees with their specifications or importance.
U r a nice human
Happy to listen your words mam 👍
Which place is better to leave for wild life zone in a farm
For example centre or Corner...
In the corner, far off areas. Near your boundary. Places that you don't walk to or walk through everyday
@@farmaanandaa and how much should be this area?
My 1000 Likes to this video. Just a humble request to show animals in Anandaa Wild Zone.
Ita difficult to capture them on camera
All is true and well said as long as wild respects other life too and limits it self to its jurisdiction. We call them wild for a reason, in an unforeseen event of up close and sudden encounter wild never hesitate to attack and all the wokism and theory will just be gone with soul...
That's true. Even humans behave unpredictably in such unforeseen situations as is evident from daily news!
Super like👍👍👍
Wow! 👌 "In fact u Wil realize that the ugliest of them are the humans" 😲Quote of the day for me 👏
A touch of Sir David Attenborough style words.
Great 👍
Well, watching other videos I was thinking about squirrel. Once we had a coconut tree. The tree was very productive. But last years of it's life we didn't even had a coconut because of squirrels. Now, I got to realize we damaged wild foods and wild life trend to take ours. :(
Beautiful speach and beautiful girl thanks
Agree with you 🙏🙏
Can you please share design of your farm.? A diagrammatic plan will be interesting
Please do make a video of d snakes of ur farm whenever you spot them.
very difficult because they will run away in no time on sight of a human or animals like dogs. They are very timid creatures.
@@edwinrodrigues9747 very true sir...
Mam but how to tackle with monkeys
Bcz they destroy everything so badly
Grow a sacrificial crop for them
@@farmaanandaa ok mam
I have been an ardent fan of your videos... and love the way you share.. thanks so much.. here you touched upon a very sensitive subject which has affected me as well. and i agree with your views too.. But i have seen snake skin hanging from my roof and have seen it move in my house.. do you have any ways to keep it away from your house at least..
The snake maybe in your house, because it doesn't have a house of its own. Do you have a wild life zone?
@@farmaanandaawe have only cultivated 30 % of the farm yet.. next 30-40 is a flat area which has been utilized yet... 20 % of the area we have left it as is for weeds and other wild grass / native trees.. this part is not utilized by us.. How can we demarcate this area as wild life zone..
Modern monoculture farming says all other plants are weeds to be exterminated by herbicides and all insects, amphibians, birds, animals are pests which we get rid of with pesticides. We produce green deserts. More than that, we allow invasive species from other regions to get introduced and spread unchecked. So the ones which really are weeds and pests for a local region, we introduce them and let them take over. How unfair is this?
Mam if animals like cat and dog went in this wild zone and venomous snake bite them then how to protect our animals
They can look after themselves. Don't worry.
Thanks mam
You have to be careful if you have dogs or cats as they run following the snakes..Have seen a sad incident.
I have seen dogs die due to snake bite in veterinary clinic.
3:25 is that a snake in the background for few seconds?
That would have been quite amazing, but it isnt :-)
Hi how do you deal with other wild animals like lions, tigers, bears etc ? Have u encountered any such instances ? Please share how do people deal with it. Is proper fencing enough to keep them out.
I say carry bamboo pole so if a snake is in the way, you can push him to the side.
If snakes came to your property from their and bite your beloved then ,suggest some precautions
Always carry a stick and thump it on the ground as you walk. Wear closed shoes. Don't walk into tall grasses. Be aware of your surroundings and movements.
👍👌👏💓
My regards mam i have nothing more I can say.
