Thank you! My mom actually is the one who repaired the holes. Since they were so small, she used a matching thread and repaired them by hand and didn't use her sewing machine.
I think the geode look turns out better when a theme like this is applied. Picking one color with some variants to it and then just one other "off-set" color works better than a few different random colors, in my opinion.
That shirt has a lot of WOW factor, I must say:) I hate when you find a hole somewhere afterwards. Can you make a video on how to repair a hole? Thanks so much:)
Thank you - I really like this one too! I actually gave the shirt to my mom who was kind enough to repair it for me. She's the seamstress of the family.
Thank you - I do too! I've gained a respect for brown dye in tie dye. Most brown dyes have great color splits and look really good in some designs - especially geodes. However, unexpected or unwanted brown from colors mixing improperly - not so much!
That turned out really well! All of the colors gave a very "natural" geode effect. I agree that the split at the geode's center adds some interesting detail. Shame that the shirt had holes, I HATE finding flaws like that in a project!
Really, really nice look overall! Split center is a very nice touch. The back is quite awesome!! You seem to be getting a much more random look as you've modified your tying technique as well. In looking online at pics of real agate geodes there seems to always be at least one band of color that is much wider than the rest, and colors tend to align with each other--in this case a section of greens and section of browns then back to greens. Just thoughts for further experimentation. Kudos!!!
I know ppl do their geodes all different ways. I'll have to try it this way. I've always randomly drawn shapes on my shirt than I fan fold them. Sometimes it's hard when it's in the middle of the shirt, making it difficult to do a full fanfold on a continued shape so I end up with a bullseye type chunk of fabric but I just kinda go with it. I can't remember how a bullseye is done. Don't u pinch and grab it then wrap? I think a lot of ppl do that same thing for geodes. Mine have always turned out, I think they look the same anyone else's does. Anyways, I like this way, I'm gonna try it. Lol. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome - I'm glad you've found it useful! I use a variety of shirt styles and brands. Most of the time for crisp designs/folds, I use Gildan Ultra Cotton shirts. The 6.1 ounce shirts are thick and seem to hold the folds really well. I love the way that ring spun cotton shirts feel, but I have had issues trying to use them for certain designs like mandalas because they were too soft and I couldn't get a crisp fold. All of my sinew lines ended up looking messy. I also like Port and Company brand shirts. They make a V-neck shirt that I like, as well as traditional and ring spun cotton shirts. Port and Company brand also makes hoodies and sweatshirts that dye up really nicely. I personally don't care much for the thinner t-shirts, I prefer a bit thicker shirt to tie dye. I'm still on the quest for the perfect t-shirt so I'm always trying new brands and styles.
@@ansleybleu Yes, when the powdered dyes are used for ice dye they will split. Since most dye colors are mixtures of various other dye colors, they will split out into some of the component colors when they are used for ice dyeing. Liquid dye mixes the colors together and makes the color uniform. Sometimes a color will weep a little bit of another color at the edges with liquid dyeing, but for the most part the dye color is more solid and uniform. I love the color splits in ice dyeing too!

Thanks! I gave it to my mom to fix, and she sewed it with some thread that matched the area of the shirt where the holes were. She used a needle and thread and not her sewing machine to fix the holes with since they were so small.
I love the way the geode is split in half. It looks really natural :) Awesome job! I know exactly what you mean about the holes, very frustrating :( I think I'm going to finally give the geodes a try this weekend. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
I love this! I really love the geode patterns that you make. What colors would you recommend for a "starter" kit? I started a basket at Dharma Trading and it was adding up to $200 before shipping - not quite ready to drop that much LOL. What do you think are the bare minimum colors?? Thanks!!
Thank you so much! Is there a particular design that you are wanting to tie dye? If not, I would purchase the tie dye primary colors of fuchsia, turquoise and lemon yellow. With those 3 colors, you can make rainbow dyed shirts. I always love using black with rainbow shirts and so I would purchase Raven Black. From there you can build on your colors to branch out a bit. They seem to have their dye stocked pretty well right now and so it is a good time to buy. Don't forget to add in some soda ash to soak your shirts in.
@@FunEndeavors I want to make ALL the designs 😂. I’m most interested in making a geode design. I’m not sure which colors yet though. I am obsessed with your tie dye designs and I do a LOT of sewing. So I’m planning on using tie dye in my sewing often and want to build up a collection. I just wasn’t sure where to start! Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll start there and look through your design library and see what color combos are my favorites to get started with. Thanks so much!!!
@@MichelleSewsAgain 😂 I get it - it's tough to choose just one design to tie dye! That's how I ended up with the large collection of dye that I have. If you want to make geodes, I would incorporate some more neutral colors into your order. I like to look on the computer for photos of geodes and try to match the colors in a natural geode. For your first couple, you might try that and order colors that you think will come close. As you know I use Ecru a lot in my geodes. Shiitake Mushroom splits beautifully and is a great ice dye color as well as any of the other darker browns and grays. The primary colors and the pure colors (ones that are not mixed)will not split during ice dyeing. They usually have the MX after the color name.
@@FunEndeavors thank you! I appreciate your help! I had actually bought a tester size kit from Amazon but the jars didn’t have much dye . I can probably get about 3 projects out of them. I’ll tag you when I post my results!!
I haven't ever tied a geode that way, but I would envision that it would be a bit more symmetrical. The unusual design on the back of this one is caused by only pinching one layer of the shirt.
What about speaking to the toxicity levels of the dyes you use? This is an important Subject to address in your work, given what we are already doing to the planet.
In general, Procion MX Fiber Reactive dyes are considered to be non-toxic and they are not considered carcinogenic. Older dyes used for tie dyeing 40+ years ago used to contain benzidine, but those are no longer used or allowed in the US. Most of the Procion Mx dyes are metal-free, but a few do contain small quantities of metal ions such as copper. However as I understand it the amount is small and insignificant for most home-based tie dyers.
