As always, next level shooting. But what is more impressive is the recovery. Being able to pinpoint those animals and then find them in the field is incredible... and a serious effort.
@@ChasetheWildNZ haha totally! I use a combination of photos from my phone of the location and landmarks, putting some pins on NZTopo50 and then if possible someone acting as a spotter. Which is why when hunting solo I stick with the closer range stuff. Plus I don't come close to shooting as accurately as that!
@spoonheadmusic yes I've found dropping a pin on NZ topo to be fairly accurate if you use angle compensated range to drop the pin. (Nztopo is 2d) I'm sure with practice you'd be smashing these shots.
@@ChasetheWildNZ The number of animals limping around due to not being able to smash such shots wouldn't make some swoon in awe. It's likely much film isn't shown widely. Or much from a lot closer. Many can't shoot consistently at 100m. And have seen a few long-range specialists miss at short range. But when on it's spectacular, and seeing someone shooting several is refreshing, especially without the preaching about harvest and ethics.
@johnmead8437 yes indeed. I've also seen many long range shooters miss at close range. The bread and butter shots should be easy.. however mistakes happen, I missed a wallaby at 100y the other day by not remembering to dial down after the shot before. Best we can do it try keep sharp and know our limits. Ppl certainly need to take more animals in NZ. Numbers are getting high and DOC will just shot them and leave them on the hill

@sharlenejukes117 he is a lucky man if you are scope shopping for him!! I often use 15-20 power for the longer shots. You can't go wrong with the SFP helix HDLR 2-16 power. Bloody good scope as an all rounder. Great for the price too.
How do you find the Element scopes when comparing dollars for dollars to other bigger name brands like Burris, Leupold etc? Specifically looking at a Helix 3-15x44 FFP as a first dial up scope stepping up from a SFP BDC reticle. Cheers
@kwgeary dollar for dollar I think the element range is very good. Certainly has the features that make using them a pleasure. If it's purely for hunting then the fine reticles can be an issue up close in the dark. The sfp helix hds are all illuminated as well. You won't be disappointed for the money in the helix range.
@ cheers for the response, hadn’t looked at those options yet. Will go check out the glass quality. Only hunting on a 308 so think SFP is best. Great video and good shooting. Cheers.
@kwgeary my pleasure. The glass on the HD helix are great! Capped wind age. Useful reticles and 2-16 means short or long you have the option. Highly recommend them
I don't want to be nasty, mate, but some of the areas you hunt look as desolate as the surface of Mars. Kudos to the animals for finding food in the area, and well done on the shooting. You guys shoot successfully at distances I can't even make phone calls over. 😁😁
@richardmeyer418 haha thanks. Takes a lot of practice! Yes it's crazy where they find food and flourish. They are not native to this environment so that's half the reason we hunt them all year round. Numbers still are too high
@@ChasetheWildNZ Way too high in most places. And still some criticise 1080 drops for killing a few, or tahr culls (which haven't come close to achieving the Tahr Plan targets). Nothing wrong with shooting to waste if inclined where recoveries are an effort as long as commercial carcass recovery isn't economic or in demand. It's interesting to see the decent panoramas and the bush/scrub/tussock shots to see the effects of the animals over time. Comparison of the monkey scrub there with that at the top of the highway pass is educational, particularly for those who know the vegetation dynamics. It's throughout the country, never believed the animals would get back to current levels.
@johnmead8437 yeah there are so many around. I will often take a few hinds for number control or carry out what I can of the good bits. Cycle that bolt and share the hunting spots with people keen to get meat for their family

@spoonheadmusic thanks! Yeah that can be a bloody mission. Land marks are key, but even still, everything looks different when you get up there!
