I've started a full Inkscape tutorial several times. Inkscape is such a huge program it's hard to put it all into one tutorial. I really do need to finish one though! I don't use a Mac though so it would be for PC.

Weld is permanent unless you use the undo arrow right afterwards.

I have a design which is a cloud which opens up like a book. I want to take a design rectangle shape with polka dots that will cut out the dots. I just want to cut one side of the cloud book out of the polkadot rectangle. But when I place the rectangle over the top of the cloud and highlight the two The slice tool is still grayed out. Not sure what I am doing wrong

Either the rectangle with dots is actually 2 layers or your cloud design is more than 1 layer. You can only slice 2 layers total. I hope that makes sense.

But they all went to one color? I want to do this process, but keep the colors different. Why do they stay one color?

If you're wanting to keep different colors then you want to group and not attach. Attaching will making everything the same color.
