      easy to say the pilot was trigger happy but chances are he wanted to destroy an enemy before they had a chance to take a shot at them. a hovering helicopter in open desert probably feels very vulnerable to they guys inside it. and after the 1st shot the pilot was in more of a hurry, knowing they had basically exposed themselves to any threats in the area.

    Now the Apache uses new navigation tech. An actual moving map so they know exactly where they are. The early models didn't have that and situational awareness was degraded. After this incident he spent every penny he had to develop an identification system for combat and the Pentagon refused to address it. The Brits, French and USA ect have to this day not agreed on a system. Something as cheap as a $50 IR panel could have prevented this. Hell, the missiles they fired cost $34k each at that time.

    It's crazy how the mentality changes.
    If it's the enemy it's fine, you can rationalize it in your mind that you are doing the right thing - even laughing about blowing them up and killing them.
    As soon as it's known that it isn't the enemy, they suddenly humanise the victim and feel the range of emotions you would feel for killing a friendly: remorse, regret, sadness.

    • @dontanton7775
      @dontanton7775 2 роки тому +7

      That is because the military and political process (and these might be harsh words, but in a sense it is true) "brainwashes" us into demonizing the other side as something that is out to kill you, where you have no choice but to act. While the science of psychology shows us the opposite is true: The vast majority of humans have the same needs, same fears and same prejudices. Only a really small percentage of any human population is inherently evil. The others are not evil, but are mainly just acting out of an externally induced belief system. Which basically means: If I can successfully make you believe that I am evil and that I will kill you, you will shut down the part of your brain that reflects upon this. Because from a biological evolution perspective, the risk you would take ignoring me as a threat is too high and an error in judgement might cost you your life. Basically your brain will enter "better safe than sorry" mode. It is very easy to abuse, and it is how entire nation's populations can be made ready to kill. E.g. see Germany in WW2.

    We lost two warriors (fusiliers) to friendly American fire in 1991 too. 7 guys I think it was. Happened almost exactly the same as this. First warrior went up and a couple jumped out the second to assist. As they got to the first one the second they just got out of was hit.
    One of the guys that got out the second warrior was a good friend of mine Dave Evans. He died of cancer last Christmas. Said the sight was horrific.
    I was out there though not in that battalion.
    Neither Dave nor I nor anyone I spoke to who was out there blamed the Americans for it. They thought they were helping us and we've heard the voice recording, they were devastated when they found out what they'd done.

      +PrinceSoviet When I arrived on scene the bodies were already in the body bags. I was told if I wanted to open the bags up to look, I declined. From what I was told, they had to pick up bits and pieces of the two soldiers, or at least what they could find. By the time we arrived to the area where we thought we needed to be to drop them off it was pitch black for it was about 10pm. There was no moon out and from what I can recall, no stars so it had to be overcast. You literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Anyway, I was left to remain with the deceased while the other two soldiers went to find out who was taking them from us. They seemed to be gone for quite some time because my mind started playing tricks on me and I started to imagine voices coming from the body bags as the two soldiers were scratching to get out. At that moment the two arrived back to the truck and scared the crap out of me because I didn't see or hear them approach. After that I don't remember anything else about that night.

    The Gulf War used a LOT of new technologies, and, combined with the fact that coalition forces were advancing rapidly, it's not surprising that there were many friendly-fire incidents. But, as with all wars with new technology, the mistakes were analyzed heavily (to the point where videos like this were actually declassified), and we've made amazing strides since. Friendlies now have tons of IFF capability that they didn't have then.
    I also feel compelled to point out how right that historian was; wars are ugly. And friendly-fire incidents will always happen, though hopefully we can make them less common. The problem with all the people here in the comments is that they have never had to fight for anything in their lives, much less go to war. They don't understand that reality isn't black and white. They don't understand or appreciate how complex life is. They want a blue-pilled, sugar-coated story where the good guys win with no casualties or mistakes, and the bad guys lose and are forever condemned. But that's not real life. That is history that is written by the victor. In the US, and in most modern countries, we generally try to emphasize our mistakes (such as making this video public instead of hiding it) to give people just a little bit of perspective, but we're having trouble because the media now only cares about what is "politically correct", instead of what is actually true. They act like anything less than a feel-good, casualty free victory makes us evil. As if they expect soldiers to be gods, and be infallible.
    We need more videos like these being made. Ones that criticize constructively, but don't condemn. Ones that look at the whole picture and say "there was no bad guy here. Just good guys and regular guys that made grave mistakes." This is important, because every human being on the planet thinks they're right. People don't go to war just to be miserable; they do it because they believe it's right. But in all parts of life, no matter how righteous we think we are being, we CAN still cause harm, and we need to address that. No matter how good your intentions, you can make mistakes, and you must own up to them so that you can learn from them.

    These are not terrorists they were fighting. This is the Gulf War. They were fighting a professional standing army. What was their excuse back then for dehumanizing their enemies? Same attitude was shown in the video clips for A10 Warthog friendly fire incident in Iraq War, yet again against a professional army. If they were not so gung-ho about killing people for adventure then maybe they would take more time to verify friendly from foes and these kind of accidents could have been avoided. They were not even willing to let go of two injured combatants. Thankfully their guns jammed.

    • @macgyver112
      @macgyver112 5 років тому

      Dehumanizing has nothing to do with terrorism alone, it's part of how every military trains their soldiers. When you go to shooting range, you're taught to engage targets when you see one without thinking too much of it. You don't see any reference to humans at all, everything is just described as targets. Terrorism, brutal regime and so on are just one way to dehumanize the enemy some more if some soldiers feel hesitant to engage.

    • @BrySkyeGaming
      @BrySkyeGaming 10 років тому +30

      Jononutoob In the case of 91, it was Saddam. He invaded Kuwait by force and declared it part of Iraq. Westerners were taken hostage as human shields, with children being paraded on TV with Saddam. There were fears they would continue south into Saudi Arabia (and they did eventually, albeit briefly, capture a Saudi town)
      Now that's not defending what happened in 2003, but please note that in 1991, the war ended when the mission was achieved, ie, the liberation of Kuwait.
      Also remember that 1991 was far more of a coalition effort. Saudi Arabia played a major part in contributing actual military force, as did Kuwaiti soldiers who had managed to escape their home.
      It was ultimately the Arab nations that went into Kuwait first and officially liberated it.
